The first domino has fallen for the Kings as we near the 2019 NBA trade deadline. According to multiple reports, the Kings are part of a three team deal with the Rockets and Cavaliers in which Sacramento is sending Iman Shumpert to Houston in return for Alec Burks and a second round pick from Cleveland. Brandon Knight, Marquese Chriss and a protected 2019 first round pick will go to Cleveland. The Cavaliers will also send Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin, who were just acquired from Portland, to Houston.
Like Shumpert, Burks is in the last year of his deal. He had already been traded earlier this season when Utah sent him to Cleveland for Kyle Korver. Burks is a 6’6 shooting guard that the Kings will probably try to play at Small Forward in a similar way that they have been doing with Shumpert. Burks has primarily been a slasher throughout his career but he can hit the three ball at a decent clip. He’s also a very good rebounder for his position and can handle secondary playmaking duties in a minor capacity. He’s probably not as good a defender as Shumpert however.
Shumpert came to the Kings last season in the George Hill trade. Since then he’s ingratiated himself into the Sacramento community and fandom. He’s seemingly every player’s favorite teammate, and has been the heart and soul of the team for most of the year. He will be missed.
The NBA Trade Deadline is tomorrow at 12 p.m. Pacific. We’ll see if the Kings have more moves to make.
UPDATE 6:36 PM:
The pick the Kings are receiving is not from Cleveland, but from Houston per the Bee’s Jason Anderson. It will likely be a very late 2nd rounder.
More details: The @SacramentoKings will receive @Alec Burks and a 2020 second-round pick from the @HoustonRockets (lesser of the Houston/Golden State picks).
