The California Classic continues today with games beginning at 2 PM PT. Today’s action kicks off with the Sacramento Kings facing the Miami Heat, following by the Warriors vs the Lakers at 4:30 PM PT.
Use this thread to discuss all the action around today’s summer league action.
Good start for Keegan .
Is this point guard the best the Kings could find?
The good news is that Freddie Ferrari will not be on the real roster
Who is this Ferrari dude and why is he on the court?
Murray getting his shots up today.
Murray is kind of floating around today without enough purpose. Also getting beat a bit on defense.
A bit sloppy with his passing as well with a couple of unforced TOs.
I like that he’s trying to move the ball but he’s making easy passes harder than they need to be
Not a fan at all of that Ferrari kid. I think it’s Coleman also who is a major ball hog. Keegan playing a little more aggressive but alot sloppier so far
Murray, who rarely seems to sprint, has that loping running style, combined with non-changing expression, that might end up frustrating fans when he doesn’t produce numbers.
Keegan has been pretty bad in the first half.
I’m not impressed with Murray on first viewing. Especially If he’s not hitting shots.
What I don’t like is Kings banking on Murray improving. He might but it’s why I’d much rather they drafted for high ceiling.
Im not buying the BPA excuse for drafting Murray. I doubt he is/was.
Agsin, could all be great but confirmed Murray’s limitations perhaps.
Haha these takes…yesterday it was “doesn’t mean anything it’s just summer league.” Today it’s confirmed his limitations because he was 9 and 9 on crappy shooting. Gotta love these things ????
It’s insanity.
like
come
on
man
Yeah I don’t understand the hate especially its the 2nd game in summer league for christ sakes.
Yet despite him having a bad game, dude almost got a double2x with 9pts and 9 reb
I’m not hating the player I’m questioning /wondering if Murray will have high ceiling. Because I was underwhelmed on first viewing. .
I don’t know…I’d say his first game was pretty damn impressive.
First viewing? Like you personally? This was his 2nd showing…
Here’s what Raptors HQ wrote about Scottie Barnes last summer after a less than stellar performance in his third Summer League game:
“There are going to be a lot of offensive growing pains with Barnes. He’s unsure of himself when he doesn’t have a passing outlet to lean on, and there isn’t really a level from which he can be considered a good scorer yet. If you adjust your expectations accordingly and buckle in for the long haul on that end, you’ll enjoy the Barnes experience a lot more. “
Remember though, Murray is who Vivek wanted. When has that ever worked out before
Makes it easy to blame Vivek for meddling every time Murray has a sub-par game while not mentioning Vivek’s reported preference when Murray excels as he did in yesterday’s game!
I’m not complaining about this one bad performance in a summer league game, I could care less. Just in general though, everything he touches or says turns to shit on this team
To be fair, the arena turned out pretty good.
May I be the guy, Jman, who points out the obvious: Barnes is a better playmaker than Murray is!
I mean, Murray has potential to be a better shooter/scorer type than Barnes, but Barnes profiled well as a playmaker dating back to his Montverde HS days in FL. He was that at Florida St, also.
Just saying. Keegan Murray and Scottie Barnes have different player profiles…and that’s okay.
I’m still a Keegan Murray fan. It is, after all, just Summer League.
No problem, Guru. I was just providing an example of a #4 pick who had a disappointing Summer League game that proved to be meaningless in his overall development. We’d all be wise to show some patience and not overreact to each game.
An excellent example, too. Being a playmaking F is a tough thing to showcase in Summer League. Keegan’s saving grace is that he shoots and scores in iso at a high level.
Absolutely!
As I stated-the was my first viewing. I didn’t say anything about yesterday
I just wasn’t impressed on first viewing. I wanted to be wowed.
But I know he’s probably going to be solid just struck a chord of fear I’ve had ever since Kings decided to chase the playin rather than rebuild.
If i had seen the first game maybe I wouldn’t feel this way.
You wish to be wowed on a Summer League performance? Egads.
Wowed by what Keegan looked like/did.
What’s so crazy about that? And as I said, if I saw the first game I probably would have been.
I was by Tyrese and Davion upon first viewing-in summer league.
Tyrese never played in Summer League. You may show yourself out now. You just revealed yourself.
It’s fucking Summer League. 90% of the players, bare minimum, are G League players. What were you expecting? The 1980’s Showtime Lakers?
Keegan Murray is leading the CA Classic in total points and rebounds. He’s top 10 in 3pt% and 3rd in 3pt makes. He’s also leading the CA Classic in total minutes.
This would be the point:
Not to mention, even with the poor shooting night and TOs (when asked to try and be a main facilitator), his awareness and ability to read/react to what teammates and the opposition was doing when not playing point-forward was soothing to watch.
He made some solid instinctual plays.
Then watch yesterdays game. Had you watched it, then you would not be posting. You are making an opinion, judgement, comment about something while lacking knowledge, that we all have.
The Heat game was sloppy. For having a bad game Murry still did some things that I liked. When I am looking at these games I am looking for flashes, red flags, things that stand out. The basketball played tends to be terrible, but when someone was the best night on court out of anyone, you kind of check a box. Likewise if someone fails miserably and looks out of place that is something to note. While Murry did not play good, it just looked like a bad game.
For me, he will thrive once we see in in structure, with talent around him. From what I saw the night before his game will fit in nice with our team. I am excited.
You will not have to wait long before he passes you eye test, or you could just watch the game before and get on the same page as most of us. Time will tell what kind of player Murray is, but I am happy seeing our guy have the best night of the classic, even if that was followed up by a meh game.
Murray with the nice chasedown off his to
Even if we lose this game, we’ll still be undefeated in the CALIFORNIA Classic.
Good D possession by keegan to end the half
Lets not count that as a Keegan turnover lol. Ferrari a bit of a tough watch.
This Ferrari more like a Ford Pinto .
Who can stretch the floor better, Orlando Robinson or Queta?
Keegans got a move a bit more offensively. A bit idle or scripting his movements oppose to responding to the defense. Shots not falling is going to happen but think he should prioritize a little more space to see his shot go down . Has some time to finish the game well though but not the best showing.
I think on our actual roster he’ll look alot better just because he won’t have to be the main guy. I do like that even though his offense isn’t really clicking he’s still playing defense and rebounding well
Agree on D and boards but feel like a 4 pic should be able to be the main guy and dominate against these guys
He was definitely a little underwhelming today but another commenter said what I was thinking, the guards are definitely not looking his way at all. He definitely struggled to get a rhythm with his shot and tried to do too much trying to set people up. I think when coach brown gets ahold of him he’ll be around the 3 point line and cutting while attention is on fox and sabonis. Think of pre warriors Wiggins compared to being on a team surrounded by real talent
That is a good point. No doubt Murray is better w better guards etc. SNSC will be
Ehh its not like the guys are featuring him every time on offense. Murray is playing within the offense and not forcing anything really.. Not hitting shots but its part of being a rookie. You have your good and bad days just like everybody else. The important things is even he is not hitting shots, he still contributing in other parts of the game. Dude got 9pts and 9 rebs and a block inspite him being horrible
That’s true as well. I did like his contributions regardless.
Great pass by Ferrari and great finish by keegan
OT: Whoa…didn’t see that one coming.
Swoop!
Kings are 7th on the waiver wire (I believe, since it’s based on the final standings of last year) and his deal is for $1.9M. That’s cheap.
I can’t imagine he’s not picked up on the waiver wire unless there is some issue we are not aware of.
I doubt theres an underlying issue. Watched the OKC draft presser and Presti talked about the possibly having to waive players considering the amount of incoming draftees. Very curious situation expect him to be claimed before us but theres a chance.
It would have to be Orlando, Houston, Detroit, Pacers or Blazers. I can’t image he’d slip past Indiana or Portland.
they have a very complete roster and tons of picks this year and the following years- the cost of having too much They even traded 2 picks to move about 3 places in the last draft/
We don’t really need another PF with Barnes/Murray/Vezenkov/Lyles/Metu all expected to be on the roster, but he’s a good enough value that I’d try to move Len and/or Lyles to free up some minutes in the frontcourt. Barnes is going to be playing a lot more SF this year, Metu or Lyles might even get some mins at 3.
I prefer Roby to Lyles, Metu, and probably Vezenkov.
Roby is already a decent player and still has room to grow so that makes sense. I don’t know enough about Vezenkov to compare but the FO seems to like him. Personally, I think Metu is a good value player based on his contract versus his versatility and athleticism (not much athleticism on this team) and he also still has room to grow his game.
I specifically named Len and Lyles as guys to potentially move because they are currently redundant (Holmes & Queta > Len, Metu could play 5 in a pinch as well) or could be made redundant (like Lyles if Roby were picked up on waiver).
Waiver Wire Order
Orlando Magic
Detroit Pistons
Houston Rockets
New Orleans Pelicans
Oklahoma City Thunder
San Antonio Spurs
Sacramento Kings
ORL already has a logjam in their frontcourt
DET could use Roby
HOU could use Roby but they already have a ton of PFs
NO already has a logjam in their frontcourt
OKC waived him
SAS could use Roby (I think they nab him)
It seems unlikely we’ll get him, but there are only 2-3 teams that could realistically take him first.
At this point, Metu is the odd man out for me if it comes to needing a cheap cut. He brings little, outside of energy & likability, to the table.
Absolutely!
swoop , yes
Thats a nice possible add for us.
We had someone (I want to say kingsrebuild but not sure) clamoring to basically trade good pieces like Barnes to get Roby lol…dude just got cut from the most “accumulate young talent team”
We’ve got a DANDY!! here in San Francisco
Davion Mitchell in the house!
(er, Chase Center)
Keegan sure took the air out that balloon fast.
He actually looked a bit tired today. His shots looked short.
I certainly hope and think that’s probably it
Back to backs are hard enough for vets so I’m sure he’s feeling it.
Not sure about skipping all the talent at 4 or dropping back and getting talent-Sharoe etc over playing it safe and getting nothing and drafting Murray.
We will see but I’m gonna question the short sidedness of Kings playoff now vrs building a contender until I see they are building.
Yup, I know I judge the quality of a draftee in July. Murray sucks, Ivey is the new LeBron! Although if the pick had been Ivey, then he would have been the wrong pick. You know, just because. Monte should be fired, and why is our head coach playing that Ferrari guy! Fire Brown, Kings hired the wrong guy!
any more hot takes I missed?
I didn’t say Murray sucks. Looks like you’re making up hot takes as your hot take.
It certainly seems that the Kings thought Murray was the best player. It’s not outlandish to think so.
One can disagree with that assessment, but I think we have about as much evidence of that as we do that they “played it safe”. It’s all conjecture from both sides and I haven’t seen any evidence to really dictate otherwise other than analysis based on made up mock drafts. And I wouldn’t call that good evidence to support a point.
Yes. They could be correct about Murray. Coulda been BPA
Was thrown off by seeing Murray for first time-and he looked blah…..
I do think he’ll be solid maybe very good
You should have watched yesterday then.
he looked good yesterday 10/14 on about the same shots as today. Some days they fall.
I watched some of his Iowa games- he is not a wow, highlight guy. Just plays steady and except for today, usually not dumb and turnover prone. At the end of the game you say- “he got 20 ? when?”
i wasn’t wowed w Murray. Maybe I woulda been if I saw first game.
U didn’t even see the highlights?
Yes but I need to see a player in game. How they move etc.
What has Ivey done to be a super star ?
Neemias is a nice postgame interview
Quick Thoughts:
Murray seemed to be rushing everything today. Ferrari makes way too many mistakes for a PG; Coleman should be starting, he is the better creator of the two and despite the speed he plays at he still turns it over at the same rate as Ferrari while still operating the offense. I like that Ellis was more aggressive today on offense. Queta knew he was the biggest player on the court and he acted like it. Rhoden had a better game today. Sistina or whatever his name is is not an NBA player. I would like to see more O’Connell than McDermott.
Hope the coaching staff introduces Keegan to the guards . They seem to avoid him .
The amount of ball hogging by these guards is infuriating honestly. I get they’re all trying to earn a paycheck but come on. Coleman especially is a black hole on offense
You know what they say.. Summer League is all about guard play.. I’m not sweating it.. Its summer league after all. I’d just want to see some of our guys (Murray, Queta and Ellis) getting some run and see how they play whether they’re playing well or not.
Hot Summer means Hot Summer League takes.
Keon Ellis was the top Sac player today with Queta a close second. Good on Sac to have them as their Two Way Contract players.
Keegan Murray played fine – he looked for his teammates, he didn’t seem to be in any hurry and forced more passes than shots. He also didn’t seem to feel the need to put on a show in a Summer League game.
Next stop – Vegas!
This is summer league- one good game, one poor game and one to go for the tie.
He has to make mistakes to learn and he sure did look flat. looked tired, turned it over a ton.
Glad Ellis had a good game and Q.
Kings will be “talking to” Vezenkov in Vegas- him or his “people”. Not sure. But that’s a good sign.
I suspect Roby will be picked up before the 7th spot in the waiver rotation.
Murray will do better- needs a PG who can see him and needs more spacing
10/14 to 5/16
He did look tired today. Played a lot of minutes in two days. He’ll be fine.
I repeat: It’s just Summer League.
Kings play Tuesday 7/5 against the Lakers for the “California Classic” championship at 530 Pacific. GSW vs Miami is the tuneup game at 3pm Pacific.
Saturday 7/9 vs Orlando 1pm Pacific (Thomas & Mack Center)
Sunday 7/10 vs Indiana 12pm Pacific (Cox Pavilion)
Wednesday 7/13 vs Oklahoma City 5pm Pacific (Thomas & Mack Center)
Friday 7/15 vs Phoenix 5pm Pacific (Cox Pavilion)
After that (on 7/16 & 7/17), it’s all slotted based on whose in contention for the “Summer League” title.
Giggity. Summer action coming your way peoplez!!!!
This is what I love about the nba off-season. You get the draft and free agency right after the finals and then the summer league after that. Makes the next season come around really quick
Thanks for the schedule. I have been to Vegas summer league 3 times. If you squint really hard and have a few beers, it might look like the NBA, but it is mostly guard dominated, selfish play with guards chucking it up constantly. They run some plays, but it is pretty mechanical. Kings trying to get Murray involved, running stuff for him but the guards all have cataracts or chuck em first philosophies.
Frankie starts because he can’t shoot and passes more frequently than most.
Not quite sure about Quetta- Good- talks constantly, goes for blocks, sets good screens, is nimble Bad- misses too many bunnies and does not rebound well.
But Ivy would have scored at least 40 ppg and had 20 assists .
dreamer!
And the games would be uglier than sin.
Called sarcasm .
Yuh. Indubitably.
