With 47.7% of the last vote, Jeremy Sochan is off the board. He joins AJ Griffin, Dyson Daniels, Bennedict Mathurin, Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey, Shaedon Sharpe, Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren and Jabari Smith Jr.
When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining. Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.
Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.
This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin on Monday. We will go roughly 20 picks deep.
How is Tari Eason still on the board???
I blame Bryant for making me much higher on him.
You’re going to have a hard time finding mock drafts that have him in the lottery. Most have him in the 15-20 range.
But see, e.g., Tankathon.
Before the lottery, Tankathon had Eason to the Kings at #9, if they fell. Most other teams at #9 were projected to take Davis. Eason is an obvious fit for Sac, even before they moved up, but mostly as a trade-down target. I’ve seen him mocked in the 20s. Also, he seems to be falling.
Before the lottery, the Tankathon mock is basically just an algorithm matching some fan’s personal big board with the same fan’s opinion on team needs.
I mean, that’s all it is now as well, but at least the order is real.
Before the lottery, the Tankathon mock is basically just an algorithm matching some fan’s personal big board with the same fan’s opinion on team needs.
Could you explain this please?
That’s just the way Tankathon works. It isn’t an insider/analyst/scout sitting down and using their ideas, connections, and experience to go through and predict who each individual team will pick. Obviously, that wouldn’t be tenable with the “lottery” functionality. Instead it basically uses a ranked list of prospects and a loose concept of team needs to automatically match teams and picks.
The list and team needs are made by the Bulls fan that created Tankathon based on his own opinions.
None of this is to say Tankathon isn’t awesome. As with any source, we just have to know where it’s coming from.
I’m not sure what you’re saying. Tankathon currently has him going to CHA at 15.
So what you’re saying is…the kings need to find a way to trade back into the first round at 15-20. 😉
Absolutely!… for Jovic or Jalen Williams
Trade #4 for #13 and #15 and pick up Liddell and Jovic/Dieng. If you could get a guy like Wendell Moore at #37 I’d call that QUITE a haul.
The 4th should be worth at least one more pick on top of those two.
According to pick value charts created in the past (based on historic trades), 13 + 15 is actually about right for 4.
I’d rather stay at #4 unless the Kings can get a true All-Star or Monte has his eyes on someone who isn’t 1 of the top 6 prospects IMO (Jabari, Chet, Paolo, Sharpe, Murray & Ivey).
Murray is your future all star!
I have him #25 on my board. I like his potential to guard 3-5 and his rebounding, but there’s not a lot else to his game that entices me. TOs, foul trouble, bad-decision making, and poor shooting could make him Sacramento’s biggest headache.
I’ll give you the TO problem but I’m not concerned because he won’t be the primary ball handler. And when he does ball handle, he has the skill to make Cwebb passes. Just needs more coaching to make better passes more often. Shooting 80% from the charity stripe is perhaps the most encouraging aspect of his game. This guy may very well be the biggest steal of the draft.
The TOs are just a symptom of the much large decision-making issues all over the court. Watching his full game is an exercise in frustration. Constantly gambling, blowing rotations, making bad fouls, passing to nobody or into congested lanes. He may end up being a huge steal, but I have a REALLY hard time seeing it happen within the timeframe of his first contract or with his first team.
Thankfully, he isn’t a realistic option at #4.
Went with OA. seems like an easy fit with what’s here. Or Davis.
Dieng again. Not really certain why this comments section, which was in love with Zaire Williams despite terrible shooting efficiency and a slim build, cannot get behind Dieng, who has the same issues but is a better defender and playmaker against higher competition.
Ziaire played against much better competition than Dieng this past year, and didn’t exactly knock it out of the park, despite having a good roster around him.
There’s a decent possibility that both become good NBA players, but if the goal is to improve quickly, there are better options available.
Improving quickly is Vivek’s goal, which makes it Monte’s mandate, but that doesn’t affect how I evaluate prospects.
Vivek sure is slow at improving quickly!
Might get to a decade straight without playoffs under his ownership…
Vivek’s great at making the wrong decisions.
The mid-late 1st round seems deeper in this draft than last year’s draft. I don’t have a problem w/Dieng, but I prefer Davis, Jovic & Agbaji.
Of course it’s all a matter of perspective. Now that the top guys are off the board, everyone has some question marks to their game. It’s all a matter of what you perceive to be their floor and capacity to reach their ceiling. Dieng, Jovic, and TyTy are the guys remaining I think have the highest ceilings, and EJ Liddell, Davis, Duren, and Agbaji are the ones that I think have the highest floors.
I like Dieng too, but since he’s in the same kind of tier that sochan, Eason, Liddel falls under, for me anyway. I’ll go with the guy who measured better which was Eason.
Ziare and Dieng share a similar body profile of smooth 6’9″ athletes that move well for their size.
Ziare went from shooting at a high clip in HS to growing 6 inches his Freshman year and looking uncoordinated. His FTs were still solid and the shot looked smooth despite the growing pains. Gets most of his points in the mid-range moving out to the 3pt line.
Dieng on the other hand is a scorer with good handles but can’t shoot. Gets most of his points at the rim and the shorter mid-range shots. Poor FT shooter.
They both are a bit disruptive on the defensive end with energy plays, Dieng gets the nod as the better defender of the two.
SOCHAN!!!! I hope we trade into the lower part of the lottery with Barnes or Holmes and get Sochan. I have an odd obsession with this guy. I think he’s going to be the “how did so many GM’s pass on this guy” player from the 2022 draft.
Johnny Davis here. Solid perimeter defense, offensive game that is versatile, and he has some fight in him. Defense is the key to getting the Kings back to being respectable.
Usually will take the more defensive focused prospect because when the shot isn’t falling, they can still impact the game defensively.
I like him a lot too. His height and wing span are longer than I original though. The poor 3 pt percentage doesn’t worry you though?
Davis is kind of like DeRozan in the sense that the analytics/positionless basketball crowd overlooks what’s right in front of you. The guy is a bucket. There’s a lot of things to his game that he does well on both ends of the floor. Handling, passing, defense, scoring, IQ, hustle: there’s a lot to like. I worry a bit if he’s going to remain as productive against NBA defenses, but he’s too well-rounded and has too good a feel for the game to bust completely. I think his floor is a solid rotation guard and his ceiling is a quality starter.
I don’t worry about the 3 pt percentage. He had such a high usage and was the point of attack defender all season. That starts to wear on a guy throughout the season. He was basically Wisconsin’s go-to scorer and defender.
My guess is he will have more spacing in the NBA to get more open set shots.
This is where I stop voting and sharing my opinions on these guys. I have enough bandwidth to investigate, research and pick my favorite 10. After that it gets too deep in the analysis for me to make what I feel is an “educated” opinion. Now, if we were picking 15 or 20 I’d watch more highlight videos on these guys but thankfully we sucked last year so I don’t really feel like I have to. Hahaha
looking forward to hearing what all you guys think of the players that will be voted on over the coming days and weeks. Really enjoy this series that The Kings Herald does. Thank you TKH.
I feel the same.
Remember when we got Kevin Martin at #26, though? Wow.
How about Hedo at 16 and I Thomas at 60. Hedo an All Star for Orlando and IT a 2 time All Star and 3rd in MVP for Boston . Great drafts but Org. failed to see what average fan did .
The Kings had plenty of players who were better than Hedo when he played for the Kings. I don’t blame them for what happened w/Hedo. Letting IT go was a massive mistake.
Yeah I think it’s time to end this exercise. What’s the point.
There are still some good prospects left.
I went with Tari Eason. Good defender with a chance to be great. Gives great effort and plays hard. Elite hand size. Wing player the Kings desperately need. I might’ve gone Ousmane, but I haven’t seen enough of him to take over Eason. Eason should be a prime target if the Kings were to trade back.
Ps. I posted a comment about this a few days ago but it was late in the day. Not sure anyone really saw it. OKC looking to make a trade for one of the best European players in the league. If they do he would come to the NBA. Thoughts on the Kings maybe trading with OKC to move up while also acquiring this guy to be the starting SG next season? Send out Holmes, our #4 and next years top 10 protected for Micic and this years #2? Just spit ballin on trade ideas that could maybe work. I like the idea of getting this dude while admittedly not watching any game footage of him. Just like the idea of the Best European PG/SG in a suiting up in a Kings Uniform… Bogi 2.0?
“Donatas Urbonas on Vasilije Micic: At least for now, there’s a feeling that he’s leaning towards the NBA. But it’s not about OKC, there is no place for Micic in OKC, or at least the place where Micic would be happy about the role he thinks about playing NBA. So his agent is working for making a trade for him. So if Micic is going to the NBA, it’s probably the most likely that there’s some other team which will trade for him.”
https://hoopshype.com/2022/05/28/thunder-to-trade-vasilije-micics-rights/
This seems like one of the most bizarre trade ideas yet. Trade a top 10 pick for a guy you haven’t seen game footage on?
I don’t think I’d do this trade, but it says next year’s pick would have top 10 protection.
They ain’t trading a top 10 pick for Micic. It’s the cost of moving up from #4 to #2. Micic just like Holmes is a throw-in to the deal.
Giving next years first in order to move up two spots wouldn’t seem to make much sense either, even if the “experts” weren’t labeling this draft as “lacking star power at the top.”
Whether it makes sense or not, again that’s the cost of trying to move up in the draft. Dallas did it in 2018 then they traded the 5th pick together with a future 1st for Atlanta’s 3rd pick. That’s just how it goes.
I said top 10 protected.
I mean the dude is supposedly the best PG/SG in the euro league. Is that not worth a mid first round pick? I’m not claiming to be a trade expert. Like I said in the post, just throwing out an idea for what seems reasonable.
I’ve read about Micic, who sounds promising, but l also can’t really say I’ve done enough to have a good feel for him. I don’t know why OKC does that trade, they don’t likely want Holmes, and the prospect of getting, at best, the #11 pick next year (if anything), doesn’t seem like much enticement for them to move down this year.
He’s 28, and without a hard commitment to come to the States, he’s just a vague idea of a dream. I’d not object to throwing a second-rounder out for his rights, but even then, I’d want to know that he actually wants to be here.
Any thoughts on what you think the cost for Micic be? I wouldn’t trade Donavan Mitchell for him if that means anything. Justin Holiday and a couple second rounders? Of course he’d have to commit to coming. Otherwise it would be the worst trade in the history of Sacramento Kings basketball and that says a lot considering the first trade Vlade did with Philly.
I could live with something like that. The main thing is that it not cost an asset, whether a first-rounder, or someone already rostered, and who is likely to contribute to the team’s improvement. It doesn’t seem like the kind of incentive that has them take on contract(s) to part with an asset who doesn’t cost a dime, and who may never play in the NBA.
Milic is basically a wish that has no expectation.
Speaking of which, can anyone explain to me a qualitative difference between “manifesting,” and wishing? Saying it out loud and telling anyone who’ll listen doesn’t seem sufficient to change what it is. Additionally, it sucks for the rest of us.
The powers of the universe have to hear it, They can’t read your mind oddly enough. They’re not always listening to you so if you say it over and over again out loud then the powers of the universe are more likely to catch it when they happen to be around and then they can make it come true.
baby Jesus told me that in a dream. It was weird he could speak really well. Similar vocabulary to the boss baby if you’re familiar with that.
Davis, then Eason.
I’m gonna take another look at Sochan. He looks like the type of player Sac should be targeting.
Does anyone else remember when the Kings were so over-stocked with forwards, they lost Gerald Wallace to the expansion draft? They were a lot better then!
Big, if true.
If true? I take it you don’t remember?
You’re missing the joke, me thinks.
I do remember that. I was bummed. Wallace was legit.
He did realize a good deal of his potential. Still, looking at that roster, I don’t think a credible argument can be made that any other player should’ve been the one left unprotected. Bad timing to do an expansion draft at that moment, he was fun, and I’d loved to have watched him become a problem for other teams.
IIRC, they protected Darius Songaila instead of Wallace. I wouldn’t have done that at the time or in hindsight.
Songaila was a core contributor, Wallace was not. The Kings needed a little insurance in case Webber’s rehab stalled (it did).
Hindsight being 20/20, Webber was the player to expose. But in the moment it was Wallace, and it wasn’t a controversial choice.
G Dub also wanted out. He was blocked by Peja and knew it. I’m guessing Petrie didn’t like the trades out there either. And they might have been worried about hurting Webber’s feelings as well.
Most importantly, as you point out, it wasn’t really that controversial.
The biggest hindsight error was only having seven guys under contract heading into the next season. They could have signed someone like Rodney Buford to an inexpensive two year deal before the 03-04 season began and then exposed him. But all Wallace had shown to that point was athletic hops & an inability to shoot, so he really didn’t fit the Princeton.
Agreed 100% per C-Webb. No way they could expose him under the circumstances.
Songaila was a member of the rotation, but I wouldn’t call him a core contributor (TBF, Wallace was in neither category, but he seemed like he’d be part of the future). I wasn’t on any Kings-related websites at the time, but I was upset at losing Wallace. Songaila was replaceable & Wallace’s 1st season in Charlotte was Songaila’s last season w/the Kings.
CWebb was never going to be exposed.
Songaila had shown the ability to play next to both Miller & Webber, which was important given Divac’s impending departure. Wallace had shown zero acumen to play in the rotation. He was a garbage time highlight reel at that point.
The Kings were still a very relevant WC contender at the end of ‘04. Songaila was a contributor. Wallace was not.
Not to argue any of your points, but my point is that, it’s difficult to be bad with an over-abundance of young forwards.
At this point, I feel like Sac needs to really beef-up on the wing. Draft a forward, (Mathurin or Griffin) or two! If there’s not one who merits the fourth pick, trade it for a proven forward, or two! A 2 would be ok, if he’s big enough, and can guard the wing, but I would much rather have a legit 3 or 4.
Murray’s the forward most likely who’s most likely to be drafted the Kings. Also, I’d say that Mathurin & Griffin are wings.
Davis seems like the BPA to me due to his all-around game. I plan on voting for Jovic next, whether he’s on the board or a write-in candidate.
Eason.
With 20 days until the draft, anyone else wondering when the Kings are gonna work out a lottery prospect? I’ve seen other top 10ish players working out for teams, but I don’t believe the Kings have had a single prospect in that is mocked to go in the first round.
Jabari did post a photo from SMF. Not that it necessarily means anything, but WE don’t necessarily know.
In all sincerity I ask, how do you know that they haven’t?
Usually that kind of info gets leaked out by agents, players, or kings insiders. There’s been zero noise about that so far. If they have worked out first round talent, then the front office has done an excellent job of keeping that under wraps. I applaud them if so.
So far, it looks like there have been very few reports. The only guys regularly mocked in the lottery that are reported to have worked out for anyone at all are Daniels, Murray, Sochan and Davis. And Davis is the only one that has worked out for more than 1 team.
Source: https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-draft-workout-tracker-where-are-prospects-going/
This has been such a strange lottery year. Pre-pandemic, there was the Portsmouth camp, the NBA combine, lots of different camps and invites.
You think this is the new normal with only fringe lottery talent willing to go to these opens and tournaments now?
A workout is the best way, especially if you can get them in a scrimmage. Still, I understand why players who are locked in near the top of the order don’t want to have a bad day, and cost themselves millions if they slide.
But it’s not such a bad year for this to happen, should the pre-draft period be short on real information. For Sacramento, it’s all but a certainty that a very good prospect will be there at four, and the hard question will be, do you take the player still available (Holmgren, Smith, Banchero or Ivey), or have you gained additional insight about players like Sharpe and Murray, and determine that you can’t pass up on one of them?
I’d be surprised if Murray didn’t do workouts. He’s all-but guaranteed to be in the top six, and the extra money he could make if selected fourth would certainly be legitimate incentive to meet with teams. As has been said, he’s a McNair-type of player, and could make it a tough decision for Monte if Murray comes in, and is really impressive.
I’m just saying, let’s get Murray in here.
I think one on one interviews are also important. I remember reading years ago that the interview is what sealed the deal for the Warriors to draft Draymond. He really impressed him with conversation and just oozed leadership and drive. You can gain a lot from a private conversation.
I remember Vlade and Vivek travelled to Europe to meet with Luka and we saw the pics to prove it. I just wonder if the Kings have had those kinds of face to face meets with any lottery prospects.
I sure hope so.
I’d esp. like them to have a 1 on 1 interview w/Sharpe so they can learn more about his personality & BBIQ.
Like you, I hope our front office is working out top candidates, even on the sly.
I would think that if any prospect slated to go #5 or later worked out for the Kings it would be leaked. I’d imagine agents would want it to be know that a player worked out for a team above their pay grade.
Maybe things have changed, but I remember the likes of McCollum, Klay, and others giving interviews to local media after their workouts. Now, it’s just silence.
If Sharpe‘s confident that he’s the real deal, I think it’d be even more beneficial for him.
I have been on the Murray train for months and was so happy when we moved up, now Im Bummed that they may actually pass on him to get Ivy who will not be a star in my opinion.
Haven’t watched many highlights of the remaining players. Going with Agbaji here for his shooting/floor spacing.
Agbaji is a weird guy. He’s a good spot up shooter and great finisher off cuts, but the moment he has to adjust or put the ball on the floor in any way outside a single straight line dribble, he completely loses his athleticism. I have a hard time figuring out if he just doesn’t adjust/improvise well or if his handle and footwork on the move is just that bad. Whatever it is, it’s jarring to watch. Hopefully, with NBA work he’ll be able to solve it.
It seems like his handle is awful.
It absolutely is. I just wonder if it’s more than that. Like a weak core or something.
I went with Eason. He certainly looks the part of an NBA player.
Johnny Davis this time, Eason next.
Voted Tari Eason. Lobbying for Orlando Robinson and Hyunjung Lee.
I wrote Jovic in, would love to see if the kings could trade homes for a pic that could yield him between 12 and 17
After another look at Sochan, he definitely looks, to me, like a guy who would be a valuable rotation player, for Sac, immediately, maybe a starter. He does not look like a #4, but maybe a trade-down option. He’s probably not gonna be as big as Draymond, or even Myles Bridges, but can likely do many of the same things, at least in time. He also reminds me, a bit, of Obi Toppin.
Miles Bridges, I presume?
Chet Holmgren is 7ft 190lbs. In the last 20yrs there have been 7 players drafted that were 6’11” or taller & weighed less than 215lbs: Austin Daye, John Henson, Nerlens Noel, Thon Maker, Skal Labissiere, Jonathan Isaac, Aleksej Pokusevski
