According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Sacramento Kings are bringing back former fan favorite Alex Len on a two-year deal worth $7.65 million.
The Sacramento Kings and free agent center Alex Len have agreed to a two-year, $7.65 million deal, a league source told @hoopshype. https://t.co/5Ytn4AVn2K
— Michael Scotto (@MikeAScotto) August 2, 2021
Len averaged 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in 57 games for the Washington Wizards last season, and he’ll bring some much-needed size to Sacramento’s front-court rotation, as it’s unlikely that Hassan Whiteside will be returning to the squad. The acquisition of another center also puts the Kings in an interesting situation, as they are hoping to re-sign Richaun Holmes to a 4-year, $50 million deal, drafted Neemias Queta 39th overall last week, still hold Damien Jones on the roster, and they also recently agreed to swap guard Delon Wright for center Tristan Thompson, although that deal has been on hold for a couple of days.
From a financial perspective, the $7.65 million deal is equal to the bi-annual exception. The Kings still have the standard mid-level exception at their disposal, worth up to approximately 4 years, $41 million. This signing also has no monetary impact on Sacramento’s pursuit of unrestricted free agent Richaun Holmes.
Okay. Now we are winning all the games!
Ha? Bye bye Holmes.I guess negotiations broke down.good luck getting 4yr 80mill
I don’t see any correlation to Holmes here.
The four downvotes are probably very disappointed that Holmes signed with the Kings even with Len on the roster!
😉
How about bye bye Tristan Thompson instead?
What was the point of the Queta pick? I truly have no idea what the FO is trying to do. Wright > TT, Davion is questionable at #9, Queta now redundant behind Len, Davis may walk after trading draft capital for him, Holmes may be lost for nothing despite having had the opportunity to trade him at the deadline. What is happening?
The TT trade appears to be dead .
Thats true…all this shit happens and I forgot that hadn’t gone thru yet. Good point. Personally like Len better than TT anyway.
Let’s hope it is. I’d rather have Len on this deal.
Agreed. As I said in a different thread, Len is not good, but he’s better and cheaper than Thompson.
Yea totally agree. I’m ok with this signing and the Harkless signing. The Thompson trade is horrendous and hopefully dead.
I don’t mind this signing,,,,,,,,,,
But I do want to see Queta more than Len..
Queta was always most likely spending a good amount of time in the G-League.
Why ?
This guy has potential, and like others said, we are not going anywhere with those signing…….
then why not just give those minutes to the rookies and young players, let them develop……
We fans would enjoy more to see them play.
Because that’s a common path for non-lottery picks. And it can be a very good one. Throwing rookies into the fire isn’t always the best developmental tactic. Especially when, as stated, the team is hoping to win some games.
Has this been confirmed by a source?
Let’s wait and see how the roster ends up. Certainly you play Queta more when it becomes obvious the Kings are not a playoff team. I’m still hopeful we make an impact deal. The Lakers want Hield so maybe a 3 way deal where another team wants Schroder and we pick up a needed piece or two. How about Buddy to LA, Schroder, Bagley and next years first for Siakam. Toronto probably wants more but who knows.
The Raptors DID draft two guys that, in their developed form, kinda do a lot of the stuff Siakam does. I’m pretty curious to see what direction they go.
That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. I want Siakam on the right deal. They’d probably love to get Fox. I’d probably let Fox go for Siakam, Boucher and a draft pick. I don’t however think the Kings are moving Fox but I’m not adverse to it on the right deal.
Mitchell, Haliburton, Davis, Buddy
Barnes, Siakam, Harkless
Boucher, Len,
others Metu, Woodard, Harkless, Bagley
Yeah, that seems like an 11th seed roster.
Soooo… an improvement.
Improvement from the sub 30-win roster were putting together.
We have no idea if Queta is an NBA-caliber player. Len absolutely is. If the goal is to win games, Len > Queta at this point in time. If Queta blows up this season and shows something, Len will be easy to bench and/or trade.
Be careful what you wish for ! Quetta is a long way from Jones caliber !
If Holmes is getting a deal greater than what the Kings can offer EBR, I’m generally curious who will do it, because I just don’t see any obvious connections that haven’t already done something to address center. Spurs?
Excellent point.
At some point I’m expecting to see a “McLemore signs with the Kings” announcement. Tyreke’s suspension is almost up too, isn’t it?
They’re all available
IT
Gay
Boogie
Benny Mac
F it just being em all back, we’re sucking either way, at least this would be entertaining.
Ain’t one a y’all mentioned my name yet…?

we do need a SF.
This is the darkest timeline.
The darkest timeline is getting Cousins instead of Len or Thompson!
This news puts a smile on my face. I don’t care about the reasons or rationale, I’m just happy McNair did that.
WELCOME BACK TO BASKETBALL HELL.
Alex “Sisyphus” Len
My brain: don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it
Me: You guys…I think Monte has something bigger in the works
I’m seriously thinking we had a better deal two days ago.
The TT deal?
Buddy / L*kers, maybe?
You ever get deja vu? 😉
Sign and trade with Holmes and Buddy = $30 million plus player in return…
It does feel like something’s coming. Harris?
They wouldn’t take Holmes. Unless there’s a 3rd team.
But I know better. Setting myself up for disappointment.
His much bigger can you get than Len? Sim Bhullar?
Papagiannis?
Harkless! Len! Tristan Thompson!
Damn, they know how to get the fanbase fired up over at the old Golden 1
If the idea is to sacrifice focusing on the future to try to win now, why does it seem a lot of the moves we’re making don’t even really make the team better (while still sacrificing the future)….?
This isn’t Len slander btw, whom I like.
This question needs to be posed to Vivek and Anil.
If the TT deal is really dead and they plan to re-sign Holmes this is totally fine. Len is an excellent option if you need 15 mpg of a really big dude.
If TT is still coming and/or Holmes is gone, this is not so great.
Maybe Monte learned a lesson along the way. Agree to a trade deal, hold onto the paperwork and use a few days to shop for a better deal.
Completely agree, if we’re going to have an aging vet steal developmental mins from the youth, I’d rather it be Len over TT.
Would prefer they go with D. Jones over either, but it seems like Monte wants a roster of vets who don’t produce much.
The Len & Harkless signings are both fine. Neither one will win or lose games for this team, neither one hamstrings the team or will save Walton’s job.
Monte playing the long game
Hopefully that particular game is very, very brief.
He looks like Buddy.
Usually these types of signings occur a few days into FA, you know the bottom of the barrel type of signings. The fact the Kings are making these signings on day 1 is just further proof of Kangz and that nothing will ever change with the franchise.
I hope these are not the big moves. They are fine as roster filling moves. More needs to be done.
Still got the 4 year $41 mill MLE max we can give out if we don’t sign Holmes. There should be at least one impact player we get.
Holding my judgement on the FO and their moves is getting tougher, but I’m determined to see what the big picture looks like before losing it.
Precisely how I feel.
It’s like one of those live painters where it doesn’t make any sense and looks like complete shit, then they turn it upside down and suddenly the picture is clear.
I love that analogy. I don’t have a problem with either signing. It’s just…… there needs to be more.
I’ll wait a few weeks. These things can take awhile to shake out.
Or alternatively in the Sacramento Kings’ case, perhaps we have the Thatcher effect, where an image of an upside down face can seem normal even though the features are upside down when rotated?

(This is actually less scary than the normal Bieber face)
It’s obvious what’s going on. Kings could not get what they wanted for say Buddy, Marvin or even Barnes. Plan two, if you have to keep this team, load up on defensive and physical players and defensive minded tough coaches.
Nothings obvious. The Len and Harkless signings are decent moves for the price. Len is better than Thompson and Harkless is a decent versatile bench piece. We need to avoid the stupid long term over payment signings and there are plenty of them going on right now.
You’d think after almost 40 years of Kings fandom, that I’d have learned to not get my hopes even mildly up regarding signing a somewhat interesting free agent.
Just be like me the Al Bundy of fandom where you realize you are in a miserable marriage, you are a show salesman but can fondly remember the glory days of 99-2004
Is there a show that consistently casts the D- list celebrities’ year after year?
I also think of those Storage Wars episodes where someone pays $80 for a locker and his happy because he makes $106 dollars at the end of that show … that’s Sacramento Kings free agency.
The GOP?
I was hoping for a trade of Buddy and Bagley. Still am.
I’m feeling more and more like that’s not happening. I wouldn’t put it past them to move Buddy to the three, similar to how they tried to make him initiate the offense.
Cojo just got 2 year $10 million for Detroit.
He’s the same player he was 2 years ago and we paid him more than double that ????. Kings are the spot to cash them checks only
…
better than snakes in the grass emojis!
Big men starting to sign…
That should help Portland a bit. Zeller is solid, and Nurkic seems to be hurt a lot.
It ain’t keeping Dame in town, though.
Didn’t say it was. He is merely better than whatever the hell they had at backup Center last year.
Decaf maybe?
If this winds up being Holmes / Len, last year’s 12 seed in the West has upgraded its backup center position. If it’s Thompson / Len, hoo-boy.
But think of all those offensive rebounds on the way to 18-64
I still think that this roster will win its way out of the bottom five. We’ll be looking at the 9-13 picks in the ‘22 lottery, I’m guessing.
Ahh, the good ol’ comfort zone.
Well, inexplicably Nikola Jovic (yes, not Jokic. But Jovic) is sitting in the late-1st at the moment. He’ll be top 10 by the end of the year. Probably top 5. But right NOW, he’s ours!
I wonder if the front office may be overly enamored with small sample size plus-minus data from the starting lineup, so they’ve convinced themselves incrementing the bench is going to make the difference. I believe they would be wrong.
To the admin: which profile is going through and down voting almost every comment?
I’m not generally a down-voter. But I didn’t want you to feel left out.
I downvoted too. I wanna be one of the cool kids!
If you think copying me is being one of the cool kids, I have baaaaaad news for you.
Boo this man!!!
Down vote for funsies, lol
I’m pretty sure it’s Shaquille O’Neal who is doing the downvoting.
Shaquille Aneel.
Uh Oh..
Barnes + lottery protected future 1st for Turner + Brissett
I think Turner is over rated and an under achiever. With his size and athleticism you’d expect more but it never seems to happened. I think people are more enamored with his physical traits as opposed to his production.
Yeah that seems about it as options, besides the Kings.
Free agent big men running for anything above 7 million…
I’m going to choose patience. Let’s see what Monte has in store next.
These are good bench signings, Len and Harkless are both solid if unspectacular vets. And they both bring toughness and energy this squad needs more of.
Hopefully we can get a decent deal for Buddy+Bagley+Wright (also hoping Thompson deal doesn’t materialize on paper).
My bad on earlier. We now have 8 guys who can play center. I forgot Whiteside
We haven’t re-signed Whiteside yet.
Far from sexy but if they can re-sign holmes we are basically at:
fox, mitchell
hali, buddy
Barnes, Hark
Bags, ?
Holmes, Len
If fighting for 6-10 seeds is the plan it’s a better shot than last year *shrugs
It’d be nice if we could get Lauri Mark or Tobi Harris for a buddy/bags centered deal…
There it is.
Yep, that’s an overpay but not a huge one. I’m happy with Holmes/Len and the TT deal going away.
I’m going to guess that a portion of that (appx. $7m?) is a trade kicker.
Same. I see absolutely no reason for the TT trade at this point.
I saw no need before they signed Holmes & Len.
Hahaha! Truth.
Yeah, let’s Scooby Doo that trade.
yeah now they have to try and swing a trade for a bigger wing. For me I’d like to hang onto Bags and only trade Wright, Buddy and top 10 protected, but I’d obviously trade him if that was the only way to do it.
That’s an overpay in my opinion and I hope after a year or two we are not talking about how to move that contract. I didn’t get the feel there was big time interest in Holmes but there’s a lot of ridiculous money being thrown around like the knicks paying $78 millions for Fornier and several others.
~10% of the cap just isn’t that much. It’s roughly half what Buddy and Barnes are getting paid. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/263656/Richaun-Holmes-Kings-Agree-To-Four-Year-$55M-Deal
Yay!!!
Holmes reportedly signs an offer to return to Kings for $55MM.
Seems reasonably fair, doesn’t feel like it will ever be an albatross contract if he performs like this year.
Is there a job somewhere for an assistant GM who only does transactions for bench players? I’ve got exactly the McGuy for the McJob. Way to win the day Monte.
