Terence Davis was one of Monte McNair’s first trade deadline acquisitions, and in his first 27 games with the Kings he showed enough potential as a microwave bench scorer (11.1 points including 37.2% from three) that the Kings re-signed him to a two-year, $8 million deal last summer.<\/p>\n
Coming into this season, there was some hope that Davis could continue to grow in that role and provide some instant offense for Sacramento’s bench unit. However, the Kings ended up drafting yet another guard, and as such, Davis quickly got lost in the shuffle. It didn’t help matters that Davis started off the season shooting terribly. In his first six games, Davis shot just 21.2% from the field and made just 2 of 19 three-point attempts. The poor shooting didn’t deter Davis much and he continued to hoist up shots despite the tough stretch.<\/p>\n
Davis fell out of the regular rotation shortly after, playing just 5 of the next 13 games. It wasn’t until shortly after Thanksgiving against the Lakers that Davis would get another chance after Harrison Barnes had to miss some time due to a foot injury. Over the next nine games, most as a starter and then back to the bench after Barnes came back, Davis played far better. He averaged 14.9 points, including 47.2% from the field to go with 5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.2 steals in 22.8 minutes a game.<\/p>\n
But just when Davis had been starting to get into a rhythm, he entered into the NBA’s Health and Safety protocols and missed the next five games. He came back for just two games but then suffered an ankle injury and missed the next six before returning on January 9th. His first few games back saw him playing limited minutes, but then he had a five game stretch that was his best of the season. He would go on to score 14, 17, 35 and 22. Then on January 25th, in a game against the Celtics he suffered a wrist injury for which he had to have surgery, effectively ending his season.<\/p>\n
For Davis, it was unfortunate timing, as the Kings would soon after deal both Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield to the Pacers in the Domantas Sabonis trade, opening up a big opportunity for minutes and role. Instead, those opportunities went to Davion Mitchell, Justin Holiday and Donte DiVincenzo.<\/p>\n
Davis is a scorer, first and foremost, and as of right now, probably is Sacramento’s best option as a bench scoring threat. That’s a role in which he can theoretically thrive, but he needs to be able to stay healthy and also consistent. The Kings didn’t get much of that this year, and with just one more year on his contract, he’ll need to prove himself all over again if he hopes to carve out a future with this team or another.<\/p>\n
