According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Sacramento Kings are signing guard Matt Coleman to a non-guaranteed training camp deal:

Coleman’s name may sound familiar, as he appeared in several games for the Sacramento Kings in both the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer Leagues this year. The undrafted 6′ 2″ guard out of Texas was spectacular in his first game in Sacramento, scoring 14 points and dishing out 4 assists, but his time in Vegas wasn’t as nearly as successful. Coleman averaged just 6.6 points and 2 assists in his final five games, and he saw his playing time slowly decline as the Summer League progressed.

With the Kings roster already maxed out at 15 guaranteed deals and two two-way contracts, the likelihood of Coleman making the final squad is pretty slim. Instead, the front office likely wanted a second look at a prospect who clearly piqued their interest earlier in the summer, and getting Coleman on a camp deal now will likely translate into a Stockton Kings signing in the near future.

The Kings are now sitting at 19 rostered players heading into training camp: 15 guaranteed contracts, a pair of two-way players, Emanuel Terry, and now Matt Coleman. Sacramento has the opportunity to sign one additional camp deal before cuts are made prior to the start of the regular season, with Terry and Coleman almost certainly heading to the Kings G League affiliate.

Kings needed to sign another guard for all the guards to practice against in camp. Can’t have the roster unbalanced now, can we.

Maybe they hired the new scout because he knows players that are not guards?

Yes! Good player. He stood out summer league. Confident, aggressive attitude. Shifty ball handler.

Keith Smith is on Spotrac now? Cool. Camp invites just are what they are. Good luck to Matt Coleman.

that picture makes him look like he’s about 5’2″, not 6’2″!
