2021 Kings Herald Draft Board: Pick No. 2

Cade Cunningham is off the board.
By | 42 Comments | Jul 7, 2021

With over 88% of the vote, Cade Cunningham easily took the first spot atop the 2021 Kings Herald Draft Board.  It should get more interesting from here.

When a choice comes up, pick who you’d want the Kings to pick given all the players remaining.  Note: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is a draft board, a ranked list of prospects you’d like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we’d take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Monte McNair or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick’s choices.

This poll ends at 5 AM tomorrow. The next one will begin shortly thereafter.  We will go roughly 20 picks deep.

Mobley is another high floor high ceiling guy that you really can’t pass on. There are arguments for Green here as I think the ceilings are comparable for the two players, but Mobley’s floor is much higher. At worst he’s a marginal NBA starting center and at best he’s a clear #1 on a winning team.

Floor way too low. He can’t shoot. Looked pretty bad in G-league actually. That guy could end up being a star if he figures it out but I’d say it’s way too big of a gamble at #2 when you have three guys on the board with equal potential and don’t carry the risk. Mobley, Suggs, and Green. I’m lower than most on him but I have Kuminga down at 10 on my board. I just not a fan of guys shooting 38%, 24% and 62%. There really isn’t a great signal that he’ll be able to suddenly get better against better defenses.

As you suggested that Kuminga may slide to #10, which means we would definitely draft him…so do you suggest we draft him ? (as kings4ever saw him as a bigger BenMac)….

which we were extremely happy during 2013 draft when BenMac fell to us…(however, he just sucks)…

I would still think it would be a miracle for Kuminga to fall to us at #9……and I think his BBIQ is higher than BenMac…..

I was high on Kuminga for awhile, not anymore. I would take Kessler Edwards before Kuminga. Kuminga is a poor mans Andrew Wiggins and that is not a compliment.

Kuminga is not the brightest bulb, there is not a lot of reason to trust transformation in his shot discernment and that is what is necessary for him among many other areas for gain.

His shot discernment is terrible and this is where his athleticism can work against him, he can get shots easily but they are not good shots. Maybe it clicks for him in 2-3 seasons, we are going to wait on him? No way, no thank you.

When I see Kuminga, I see a bigger version of Ben McLemore. He’s kind of a mess with intermittent flashes. If you get seduced by the flashes, you are likely to regret it.

I would like to bet on Kuminga because he has physical gifts but I dont think he’s smart enough or fundamentally sound enough to make that bet. It is not good risk vs reward.

Kessler Edwards by contrast is ready to play quality rotational NBA minutes. I wish he was a better passer but he does not have far to go to become a really good player. He reminds me of Paul George without as much shake and bake.

Kessler made 92 out of 105 FTs for 87%. I trust his shot from deep will come to go with midrange and out of the low / mid post. Edwards looks like has size to play PF too which would give the team a good floor spacing for Ty and Fox. Edwards has a good face up jab step and go, can turn over both shoulders on his post up and comes off screens well.

He is comfortable in most offensive positions on the floor. Defensively he has good awarenesss to get deflections. I wish his steal and block rate were higher.

His rebounding needs work as does refinement on his shot so he is not “lunging” on his release. I wish he had more burst but he’s a good athlete. When this “community draft board” shakes out, Kuminga, Barnes, Moody and Wagner will be ahead of Edwards. Why? Mainly because the mock drafts say so.

Mock drafts are corrupted by misinformation and disinformation from scheming teams and player agents that want to see players rise or fall depending on their self-interest. So who cares what they say, frankly, including this one. I am curious I suppose but I will discount it almost entirely.

Previously I issued my Top 5 board at #9, knowing the Top 4 is a lock unless Suggs slides, which is possible because hes just okay. Regardless now I can narrow it down even further to my Top 3 with an almost 100% certainy one or more than one prospect will be available!

(1a) Isaiah Jackson, aka the Unicorn
(1b) Alperen Sengun
(3) Kessler Edwards

Honorable Mention:
Kai Jones
Davion Mitchell

In this game vs Tenessee, the Unicorn dominated the 1st half vs a Top 20 ranked team. You can see the glimpses of future stardom on both ends. And Jackson was not starting for a lot of the games earlier in the year. Put me in coach, put me in! Meanwhile the Tenessee backcourt was barely even visible to my eye.

In addition to his 13% block rate, Jackson had a 66% free throw rate! That means he shot 3.6 FTAs per game for every 5.5 FGA taken. That is attack mode translating into freebies. By contrast Evan Mobley had a 57% free throw rate, DeAndre Ayton had a 42% free throw rate at Arizona, and Marvin Badly had a 48% free throw rate at Duke. These latter numbers are not bad but put in context the relative frequency with which Jackson put the defender at a disadvantage.

And the shots Jackson missed you can see are only the result of lack of strength, those will be conversions soon enough, and yet he still managed to post a 59% TS%! Woo!

I don’t think Kessler did anything noteworthy in the combine scrimmages. From the bit I saw, he appeared a bit stiff and a second too late on defensive rotations. Second round seems about right for him. Although, I like your Davion Mitchell mention.

I have Green barely over Mobley here. I just think that his skillset better translates to elite NBA player. Mobley is probably a slightly safer pick, but I’m swinging for the fences of the current NBA.

Same here. Green screams star potential to me and on this team he would have a great chance to blossom as we are lacking in that department. I think his worst case is he fills up the scoring on a bad team, like Bradley Beal. It’s tough though as Mobley is a great prospect.

I personally am just inherently afraid of guys that tall and that lean holding up physically in the NBA ala Porzingis, Thabeet, Greg Oden, etc. If he can stay on the floor then he’s going to be a generational talent, but it’s for the health reasons as well as my preference for big guards/wings/forwards in the draft (they always just seem to end up contributing to winning more than centers) that i have Mobley at no. 4 behind Suggs and Green who I feel are more likely to achieve their potential.

Green has star potential when it comes to scoring, but I worry about the other aspects of his game. He’s definitely the 4th best prospect IMO (I think Cade, Mobley & Suggs are better prospects).

Mobley for me. Green might end up being the better player in the long run, Mobley might contribute to more team success during his career. With the current Kings roster, they really would benefit from a big man that can cover for the lack of wing defense. His ability to get back and defend the rim when Fox/Hield/Haliburton, etc. inevitably let their man get by them is drastically needed.

Gone to heaven for Evan? I think the next three or so are even talent wise, so going for need here is fine.

Next add is a crapshoot. I’d go with Bouknight.

I recall conversation about offering LeBron a max deal when his first contract in Cleveland was expiring, and 10% of the folks said no. You could offer free ice cream and 10% of the people will have issues with the lack of diabetic offerings, the additional traffic, contributing to obesity, etc. 90% is 100% when social media adjusted.

I went for Cade but there are legit arguments for Green and Mobley at #1. Green might be a better scorer from day 1 and Mobley has some elite skills. Cade definitely checks a lot of boxes (size, passing, shooting, playmaking), but he lacks elite quickness or athleticism. That, for some, may limit his ceiling and push people towards Green or Mobley. Cade is not a consensus #1 like a Blake Griffen, Ben Simmons, or Anthony Davis were. He’s more in the Anthony Wiggins category in terms of differentiating himself pre draft.

I’d say this is a lot like the Simmons year. A pretty clear consensus with a few outliers/contrarians.

I’d expect Green to be a better volume scorer. But I’d expect Cunningham to contribute more to overall team success thanks to his passing, creation, and defense.

That’s why I picked Cade as well. But Green and Mobley both have legit cases for #1. I see all of them as high floor high ceiling guys. I’m not surprised that some people didn’t pick Cade, that’s all.

Mobley hands down. Has the age height and wingspan. I also think he’s going to show he’s a lot better with his passing and would be elite in a well developed offense with PNR. Mobley at 2 BPA make it happen monte.

Mobley 2A and Green 2B. I think the versatile unicorn big is making a comeback (or is it the first time) in the NBA. Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama will be the pinnacle with Mobley possibly leading the charge.

Yeah, it’s Mobley here for me. I think one could make a good argument for Green and Suggs, but all other things being equal I tend to look at floor and what their role would be if they DON’T become a star. Who are they if they don’t hit the outlier development curve that makes stars and they just show the marginal gains and refinements to current skillsets?

I do think the market has over-corrected on Kuminga and he’s become a bit underrated in some circles. That said, the top of this draft is excellent. Being rated below Cunningham, Suggs, Mobley, and Green is no insult.

Agreed. Kuminga hurt his stock a little bit with his play in the G-league, but I think he will surprise a lot of people if he indeed slides to 5th or even 6th. I think he’s one of the few that would turn out to be something special in 2-3 years.

Kuminga and Bouknight are the two guys that I’d really like for the Kings that JUUUUUUST might slip to #9. Need a Keon or Jalen Johnson type to jump a couple spots which you can’t rule out in a draft where there’s so much disagreement beyond the top-4.

Bouknight will be available when the Kings pick at #9. Kuminga? I can’t see him slide past 7. He’s either going 5 or 6. But hey, stranger things have happened before. If Kuminga manages to slide to us, I’ll be ecstatic and would say Monte would have “lucked” out 2 years in a row with Haliburton and Kuminga.

Also got Suggs at #2. He’s just too well-rounded as a player, too special as an athlete, has too good of positional size, and too few downsides for me to not believe he’s the safest high-ceiling pick in this draft after Cade.

I picked Evan Mobley, I see high potential for a versatile center that has potential to average a double-double, be a solid rebounder and defensive anchor.

Would like to petition for Moses Moody to show up next on the board.

With the way today’s game is played, I think Green can score 20+ in year 1 and 25+ by year 3. So smooth offensively and can score in different ways with his athleticism and playmaking.

Switching gears – my 2nd round hopeful is BJ Boston from Kentucky. He was a 5-star recruit and we’ve seen so many Kentucky freshman underperform statistically and do well in the NBA (Bledsoe, Bam, Booker, Maxey). BJ Boston has the attributes to be a 2-way player on the wing. I wouldn’t mind if the Kings traded up in the 2nd round to secure him. So many 2nd round picks we have made recently and still retain, might as well package an extra one to move up to the 25-30 range and grab him.
