We tend to joke about the Kings drafting X+1 in an X player draft.

So how many players are really in the top tier for the 2021 draft? It seems at this point that this is a five player draft. In no particular order:

  • Cade Cunningham
  • Jalen Suggs
  • Jonathan Kuminga
  • Jalen Green
  • Evan Mobley

So the Kangz thing would be to draft 6th. Or are there more (or less players) in that highest tier?

I think there are tiers within the Top Tier but this is pretty much the cream of the crop.

Currently think it goes something like this, though admittedly it's pretty tight 2-5 with a lot of time left to evaluate.

1) Cade

-----

2) Mobley

3) Suggs

-----

4)Kuminga

5)Green

@wgriffith Agreed that Cade seems to be in a tier of his own. I find it harder to differentiate between the other 4.

I think there will be as many as 8 exciting candidates by the time the draft rolls around.

@riksmits The main reason some evaluators have Kuminga & Green a tier below Suggs & Mobley is b/c Kuminga & Green haven't played yet.

@wgriffith Yeah, this looks right to me as well. The next tier gets a bit more wild, but there's a sizable drop-off here. I mean, it drops off to a level that still would have been in the conversation for top 5 in 2020, so it isn't terrible to fall outside the top 5.

@robhessing Which is fine. At least one of Barnes, Jalen Johnson, and Ziaire Williams will be available there. All are high end talents that fit the Kings needs well.

Is Scottie Barnes in this conversation? I saw him play early in the season a couple times and that kid has some serious talent.

@besthyperboleever Scottie Barnes scares me.  He is the one guy in most top 10 mocks that I want to stay clear of.  He is currently shooting just 44% from the charity stripe.  That's a red flag for me.

@adamsite That's definitely a strike against him. His shot in general looks like he isn't fully comfortable with it. Too much guiding the ball. Though the mechanics aren't bad. But he's also the best ballhandler and most versatile defender in that second tier of wings. If his shot wasn't a such a question mark then he'd probably be in that top 5 tier. Which, um, I guess would make it a top 6 tier.

For what it's worth, we are still working with very SSS on those percentages. I'm not saying he's a good FT shooter, but he's taken about 20-something FTs this year. He shot 70% in EYBL last season as far as I can tell. Again, not good, but approaching serviceable.

Admittedly I would rather have a top 5 pick, but once you get to around pick 5 there isn't a huge difference in the lottery. Picks #5-9 since 2010 have yielded 6 all stars. Picks 10-14 have also given 6 all stars. If you compare by win shares pick range 10-14 has had more win shares that picks 5-9 in 5 of the 9 years. Pretty even historically picks 5-14. Point is, this year I am telling myself not to worry too much about tanking between picks 7 and 11.

Now if you can get into the Top 4-5 then that's a different story (and yes tanking would give you a better shot). Unfortunately without Ping Pong luck,  I think the Kings will end up in that 7-10 range, like it feels they perpetually are. Some good choices there though.
