Kings 123, Thunder 117: No Fox, No Problem (But Please Get Well Soon, De’Aaron)

The Sacramento Kings improve to 4-0 since the All-Star break.
By | 102 Comments | Feb 28, 2023

It’s not easy to beat the same team twice in a row on their home court, but that was the task at hand for the Sacramento Kings in Oklahoma City tonight.

To make matters more difficult than they were in Sunday nights 124-115 win over the Thunder, the Kings had to play this one without De’Aaron Fox. Sacramento’s star guard was ruled out with a wrist injury prior to tipoff, but with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander out for OKC, I guess we’ll just call it even. Next man up.

There is a (possibly dwindling?) community of Kings supporters that believe the biggest thing holding 2nd-year-guard Davion Mitchell back from real NBA success is playing time. With Fox out, we got an opportunity to test that theory tonight.

The Kings starters didn’t really miss a beat offensively. They dropped 44 points on the Thunder in the first 12 minutes. Mitchell led the way with a team-high 9 first quarter points.

This game followed a familiar theme, though. From the first quarter to the fourth quarter, Kings starters would give the Beam Team a solid lead only to have Mike Brown’s patched together bench unit give it away.

Credit to the Thunder. They played hard all night. Sacramento just didn’t have enough bench contributions to put this game away early despite the starters’ best efforts.

There wasn’t a better example of this unfortunate trend than the 13-0 run Sacramento put together in the 3rd quarter. The Kings lead reached a game-high 17 points here before the bench unit checked in, went ice cold offensively, and allowed OKC to score themselves back into the game.

That 17-point lead quickly evaporated to a 6-point cushion heading into the 4th where the Thunder actually tied the game at 98 with 7:43 remaining.

Thankfully for the Kings, OKC never got closer than that. The Kings starters took back control of this game through the rest of the 4th quarter with Davion doing his best clutch Fox impression down the stretch hitting back-to-back late jumpers to finally put this game away for good. Kings 123, Thunder 117.

Let’s talk about some of these guys.

Davion Mitchell did enough. We already mentioned him a few times running through the game flow above, but he finished with 15 points on 6-10 shooting with 4 assists, 1 block, and several solid defensive possessions. His offense did disappear through the middle moments of this one, but he hit two big shots late in the 4th when it mattered most, and he was good enough to help the Kings win without De’Aaron Fox. Kudos.

Kevin Huerter gets my vote for MVP. You could have given it to Harrison Barnes or Domantas Sabonis and I wouldn’t complain, but Huerter has been on a mini slump since the All-Star break, so I want to give him props here. Huerter dropped 20 points on 8-14 shooting to go along with 9 assists and 4 rebounds, and really picked up the slack as a creator with Fox out of the lineup. It was great to see him have such a big impact in a winning effort. Feels like its been a while.

Domantas Sabonis was one assist shy of a triple double with a final line of 22 points on 8-10 shooting with 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. It’s wild that this felt like just another typical game from Domas.

Harrison Barnes led the Kings with 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists on 8-13 shooting. His 3-point shot to give the Kings a 101-98 lead with 7:36 left in the 4th might have been the biggest of the night. The Kings don’t win this one without him.

The entire bench unit was pretty invisible out there tonight, so all they get is this disappointing sentence.

This was another good win for the Kings. No Fox. On the road. OKC is a tough, scrappy team. This marks 4-straight victories since the All-Star break. All is well. Light the beam.

Next up: The Kings will be back in Sacramento on Friday night to host the Los Angeles Clippers.

Man, 11 games over .500. This truly is just so unreal that that’s how far we’ve come as long suffering Kings fans just waiting for this team to be good again.

Whatever wins you can get, get ’em. Gotta put as much cushion as possible as we get through the remaining 21 games. Crazy that we’re playing games that actually matter this late in the season.

Agree 100%, but Walton also didn’t have Sabonis, Murray, Monk, and Huerter for a season. This really is a different team from last season.

Dallas is in serious danger of missing the play-in – their coach is terrible, Flatty’s presence means they can’t just run Luka iso on every possession and without DFS & Dinwiddie they can’t defend anyone.

Luka’s conditioning has to be getting concerning too – after 5 years on an NBA training & nutrition regimen you would expect him to look like he’s in better shape.

Flatty and Flabby are struggling. They are dropping out of the top 6 and this would be fine except they are replaced by the duds. Good new though- they go on the road soon.
the #7-12 teams are struggling. Waiting for one or two to emerge.
Utah finding it tough to win. OKC seems to be getting ready for the season end “pack it in” strategy. LAC cannot find a way to win consistently. Wolves are flaky as shit.
Kings need to take care of their own business- next 4 are tough- win 2-3 of them.

It’s so weird because this past off season, everyone was showing off the Luka sleeveless Luka pic stating how in shape he is. Then he ends up missing a few games here and there in the regular season and it’s back to soft tissue Luka now. I chalk it up to bad genetics.

Clippers lost. Warriors won. Be interesting to see how the Clipps approach this b2b coming up Thur/Fri (they’ve started this stretch 0-3 w/ Ls against us, Denver and tonight vs Minny).

Sac is 3rd. Phx is 4th. LAC is 5th. GSW is 6th.

Just like Dallas having two healthy superstars (Luka and Kyrie), the Kawhi and Paul George Clips (now 33-31) have disappointed (maybe add in the “when healthy” Lebron and Anthony Davis as another disappointment.

Makes little sense to change the rhythm of an entire offense (a great offense, at that) to maximize the strengths of one fringe role player. Much easier to just sit him.

Sabonis and Monk run pick and rolls all the time once Monk checks in…not sure why Monk and Holmes can’t run them together as part of the second unit. Obviously, Holmes isn’t the player that Sabonis is, but the set is obviously in their playbook. Brown must not have much confidence in Holmes running the set.

They’ll be able to. My suspicion is there was teams interested but couldn’t make a deal due to his contract. And couldn’t convince ownership to make the commitment. This summer that changes IMO. Especially since teams will have one less year to commit to.

It is what it is.

Ruben, I turn on the G man on Sirius XM channel for the Kings (channel 805 I believe) then I pause the game on League Pass for about 45 seconds and sync up the audio with the TV game and it is wonderful. It takes a little syncing but it’s not too difficult.

All, I went back and checked. Kings games are broadcast on Sirius Channel 905. What makes it easier to synch up with the League Pass system is both have pause, rewind, and advance buttons so you can play with getting the two systems really closely synched up with each other.

Set Channel 905 as a “favorite” on your iPad or iPhone and that makes it readily available just by pushing the “star” (favorite channel) button on the Sirius XM app.

When you load the Sirius XM button on an iPhone or iPad or Google phone, etc it continues to play audio in the background if you want to jump onto TKH to comment during the game.

Have fun.

can’t win’em all – It is an odd feeling that a part of me expects Sac to win against any sub .500 team now. So weird- but a good weird.

Box score hot takes:
Say what you want about +/- but
Every starter had double digit plus, every other King had minus. In his 1:52 little used Richaun Holmes was -10.
Despite a not particularly handsome offensive outing, Sac had 34 assists on 43 made FGs. Maybe the 19 TOs made it feel a bit ugly.
OKC really distributed the minutes: of the ten Thunderers: Jaylin (not Jalen) Williams played the least (17:20) and Jalen (not Jaylin) Williams played most (32:44)
OKC has the tenth best point differential in the League (yes the League)

And so ends an 8-4 February! What a nice beaming record.

And that leads into a mean looking March. 31 days and 16 games. Hope these Kings can make the time Spring forward!

LIGHT THE BEAM! and Put on your Petticoats and Dance!

Making up 6 games on the conference leader with 21 to play is extremely unlikely. Denver has 19 games left – even if they stumble a bit and go 9-10, the Kings would need an absurd 17-4 finish to tie them.

Catching Memphis is going to be tough enough – they have 4 out of their 22 remaining games against shamelessly tanking teams. 9-9 in their competitive games gets them to 50 wins, which is probably the realistic ceiling for the Kings record.

Keeping home court seems likely at this point, doesn’t it? The Kings are formidable at this point. They can score on anyone, and have what, eight different players that can score 25 in a game?

OKC makes you beat them, that is for sure. That is a tough team, they go all out with a lot of athletes. I loved how Huerter and Barnes stepped up tonight.

It appears Keegan has leveled up. If Davion does as well, then I cant imagine that the Kings don’t hold home court, and likely win a playoff round.

With all the talk of how tough the Kings schedule is, it appears the Kings are the tough opponent. To paraphrase Walter White: The Kings are the Danger

Coach Brown was, IMO, noting publicly that the Kings would be “hunted” after the All Star break, but within the confines of the locker room and during morning shoot arounds was telling his team they are The Hunters, the team that can beat anyone in the league.

And, he has one apparently pissed off point guard channeling Nate Archibald after the AS break in 1973 who is on a tear to prove how good he really is to everyone, everyone, but mostly to the NBA Coaches who didn’t vote him onto the team.

I am looking up the ladder rather than down. The Kings, like Orion quietly crossing the night sky of the playoffs, are hunting.

Coach Brown is hands down the NBA Coach of the Year. He has his team, and his best player, poised exactly where he wants them.

Well said JP.

It is really interesting to see this team, staff and players, adapt not only game to game, but quarter to quarter.

Again, the Kings have eight different players who have scored 24 points or more in a game this season. A lot of weapons, and a system that makes the most. This team doesn’t live or die by any one way to score, they have multiple three point threats, multiple threats to get to the rim, multiple players that can draw fouls, and multiple play makers.

It is so much fun to see them work through everything each game, and figuring out which way they are going to pummel a defense.

What a season.

That was terrific, wasn’t it.

The narrative is so strong this season, and the buy-in is complete.

What. A. Season.

If Davion can finish strong and be a threat to score, I am going to lose my mind seeing what damage they can do in the playoffs.

Memphis might shit the bed but I’m not counting on it. I think Phoenix will push hard and they have 2 games left w/Sac. But they are also 4 games back in the loss column as of tonight.

It’s likely that Memphis is 2, Sac or Phx 3/4. But I don’t see anybody else finishing in the top 4 at this point. Clippers are in a bad spot, but I can see them winning 10 in a row. They just are dangerous, scuffling or not.

Can you or someone else explain the fixation on the loss column to me? The number of losses is dependent on the number of games played. Team A can be up on Team B in the “loss column” even if the teams are identical in every way, so long as Team B has played more games. Isn’t the loss column meaningless until all teams have played 82 games? Winning percentage would seem to be a much better measure of a team’s standing. Am I missing something here?

If you think of winning percentage, once you lose a game, you can never go above that winning percentage once all 82 games are played.

For instance:

Once you lose your first game, you can never finish the 82-game season at 1.000 winning percentage.

Once you lose two games, you can never finish higher than 0.975.

etc., etc…

So because teams are on different schedules, you can always win future games to raise your winning percentage at the moment, but once you lose a game, that lowers your possible final winning percentage that you can try to achieve for the season.

Or think of this:

If these two teams went undefeated the rest of the season

Kings 36-25
Suns 33-29

Who would have the better record?

The Suns obviously could not pass the Kings in this scenario, because they already have more losses.
The best record the Suns could possibly achieve is 53-29, whereas the Kings can still possibly achieve 57-25.

So for wininng percentage: the Suns, with 29 current losses can go no higher than .646 winning percentage for the season. But the Kings still have the ability to go above .646.

Once you have a loss recorded, it puts a limit on your possible ending winning percentage for the season.

Every new loss added lowers your maximum possible winning percentage for the season.

loss column- once the game is lost- and seen in the loss column, you can never get it back. While number of games played is interesting, if a team lags in games played, it can win the difference but cannot make up for a loss.

For any 2 teams, the one with more losses – even if they win out from here – has to hope that the other team loses games, for that team to be caught. OTOH the team with fewer losses is “in control of their own destiny”, in that if they just take care of their own wins then it doesn’t matter what the other team does.

Or another way of saying what Kosta said: You can always win more games but you cant take any losses away.

Memphis is experienced, playing fairly well and beat some teams recently like Denver to whom they could have lost. They seem set. However, they just cannot beat GSW.
Suns will move up- can they catch up 4 games in loss column- yes !
I don’t care who the Kings play in the playoffs as long as it is not the duds who are dangerous. They just decimated Portland last night, after trailing by 23. A 4/5 finish with us and them is a possibility. Not looking forward to that unless I know in advance that Kings win.
Loss column- cannot make up for a loss. That’s the key number.

I’m not convinced the Suns finish 3rd. They’ll likely need at least 15 wins in their last 20. Looking at their remaining schedule, they have little to no margin of error if they want to achieve that.

Agreed BTB. This is clearly becoming a simple math problem for everyone behind Sac.

It’s just hard for me to see a team with injury problems adding an oft injured player (no matter how great) and then immediately winning out the season at an 80% clip.

I think they’re an improved squad with Durant, sure….but, I don’t think they’re that improved. Considering where they were without him.

Same goes for the 11 seeds chasing the Kings. At this point, if you’re not within 4 games, it’s not very realistic to expect to catch someone, unless there is a meltdown coupled with a resurgence.

Yeah, that wasn’t great. Kings need to take care of their own business now, though, and defend the 3 seed. If they get to 2, great, but I wouldn’t count on it

Certainly not the prettiest game, they should bury that Q3 in the desert. But, they took care of business and won the game they should win. Plus, Lakers lost. Good night all around.

Trysta, Speak To Me.

Thanks Ruben. Much appreciated. A great podcast.

She had on a Knicks jacket…the Knicks are to the Eastern Conference as the Kings are to the Western Conference. The Kings v Knicks game in Golden 1 is going to be a great game. If you have a ticket don’t miss it.

NBC Sports App. Was not able to watch the game due to a recent app update that kings game was not showing as available in the app. Anyone else experience this? I live in Sacramento and TV provider is AT&T in Sacramento.

I recommend just streaming through the NBC website. That’s what I’ve been doing these last couple games. I always seem to have trouble with the NBC Sports App. Games are always freezing or not loading.

I have to think MB gave Fox a rest day before the games get tougher. I may be overthinking it but a late scratch makes it a lot harder to plan for a team. And while the Kings aren’t better without Fox, they certainly are difficult to plan for when you don’t know if the main scorer is playing or not.
Also, even if the Kings go 10-11 the rest of the way, I think the 6 seed has to go 14-6 to tie the Kings. The 11 seed has to go 17-4 to tie the Kings. It’s looking more and more promising and even downtrodden Kings fans can start to believe in the beam.

If the Kings beat the Clips again on Friday, I will officially be a Beamliever. Holding off the team who’s dead-set on revenge after you tore out their heart a week ago would be a major statement.

Major statements:

Nov. 15- After starting the season 0-4, the Kings go on a 7-2 run and defeat the Brooklyn Nets 153 to 121 on national television.

Nov. 22- During a 7 game win streak, chants of “light the beam” can start to be heard on the road. Wall Street Journal writes an article “How the sorriest franchise built the NBA’s next great offense.” Memes like “you’re gonna make me beam” start to float around twitter. Kings beat the Grizzlies 113-109.

Nov. 30- Kings have lost 3 in a row. Tyrese Haliburton comes to Sacramento to show everyone why trading him for Sabonis was a bad move. Indiana, including Haliburton, who picked up a technical and was just absolutely owned by his daddy De’Aaron Fox, was just overwhelmed. “Tough game,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “This game is on me. I didn’t have them prepared for what was coming.” Kings win 137 to 114.

Dec. 30- Down by 1 point with 12 seconds in the 4th, the Kings hosted Lauri Markkanen and the Utah Jazz. Kevin Huerter for the win! Kings now 19-15 for the season.

Honestly, I’m just gonna stop. There are too many statement games. Too many major statements. How many more do they need to make?

Light the fucking beam.

Question: How many more wins do the Kings need to make people believe?

Answer: One more than they currently have!

I’m just enjoying it for what it is right now. We have had too much disappointment over the years to not for me.

If my math is right, the bench took 25 shots and 17 of them were 3 pointers. Have to think we could use some lower variance attempts from the backups. We don’t need max production there but we do need avoid minimum

100% worth it.

if you ask me this would be a sneaky good move. Maybe not for this year but next year but it could pay off big time a 10 months from now. Kings are losing Len, likely finding a new home for Holmes. Having Sandro and Queta as 2 back up big options for the 2023/24 season sounds pretty sweet to me.
