Report: Kings End Pursuit for Ben Simmons, per Woj

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski says the Kings feel the Philadelphia 76ers' asking price for Ben Simmons is "too steep."
By | 93 Comments | Jan 28, 2022

The Sacramento Kings are out of the Ben Simmons negotiations, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Per Woj:

The Sacramento Kings — one of the most aggressive teams in the trade market and once an eager suitor for Philadelphia‘s Ben Simmons — have ended their pursuit of a deal with the 76ers and turned elsewhere in trade talks, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Inside of two weeks until the Feb. 10 NBA trade deadline, the Kings believe the asking price for Simmons is too steep and that a pathway to a trade agreement with the Sixers doesn’t exist, sources said.

The Kings’ roster represented one of the Sixers’ best options for a Simmons deal ahead of the trade deadline. Losing them in the marketplace somewhat diminishes the chances of an in-season trade, although the Sixers still believe there are potential avenues to find a deal in the next two weeks, sources said.

This is the latest in a long line of reports on the Kings reported conversations with the 76ers. Earlier this week, Sam Amick and Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Philadelphia’s President of basketball operations Daryl Morey was asking for Tyrese Haliburton and multiple first round picks in exchange for Simmons. Last week, Shams also reported the Kings had no plans to trade De’Aaron Fox, and “want to center the team around him and Haliburton.”

With less than two weeks to go until the trade deadline, negotiations are clearly happening as much in public as they are privately. It’s hard to take any single report, even ones from Woj, Shams, and Amick, as hard truth during smokescreen season. But at the very least, we can assume Monte McNair isn’t willing to pay the 76ers current (and apparently very high) asking price.

It’ll be very interesting to see if Morey follows through on the plan of keeping Simmons – who hasn’t played all season, citing mental health reasons – through the full season and into next offseason. Joel Embiid is playing at an MVP level right now, and the 76ers are securely in the playoff hunt. But if Morey fails to trade Simmons this year, even if he does so hoping he can pull off a bigger trade in the offseason, he’s risking a prime season and playoff run for Embiid.

We’ll wind up giving up a 1st round pick to Det., and then we will hand Jerami a fat extension. And then for the next four years we will get to carry Grant.

If the Kings have more than two of their current starting five after the trade deadline, it’s a fail.

I’m glad they “shot back” in the media after last week’s Morey callout …. and not shocked that he won’t be a King. Don’t be used for leverage again.

Ain’t nothing over ’til Simmons is off Philly. This is probably just negotiation through the media, but I can believe McNair and co. got frustrated with Morey. However, getting Simmons is still an option on the back burner AT LEAST, no doubt. Looking at player salaries and possible third teams, it went like this at G1C:

exactly where I am, too. Not too sure how many options Morey has, I would think a lot but maybe not? (Salary matching, picks, etc.) But I don’t think it’s over. Just think it was a response to last week.

I wonder what morey actually asked in return since it’s more than Halliburton + 2 first. Salary has to match and I bet morey asked for some 3 pick swaps in addition to what’s been reported

I think the Lakers would have to send four players to make it work. That’s not to say that a third team couldn’t get involved to help facilitate things.

How about this? I don’t know anything about Krecji but his salary is partially guaranteed for $780K next year then non-guaranteed. Looks like he was a stash player drafted in 2020. Lakers get Buddy and him because OKC has to trade at least one player. Kings get THT, Dunn, and the 2027 1st rounder. Thunder get a bunch of players they can waive (Woodard is guaranteed for $300K next year then non-guaranteed) and two 2nd rounders.

Looked it up at Coon’s site and OKC gives the Kings $1.1 million as well (third set of bullets). They have so much dead salary already that $1.1 million more shouldn’t be a big deal.

Morey has to keep those asks sky high and public so when he maneuvers for Harden this summer and the league investigates he can show how hard he was trying to make a deal happen.

Keep going back and forth on Simmons on whether or not Morey really intends to deal him. So this is my theory.

Morey has no plans on trading Simmons ultimately, only appearing to do so. Simmons doesn’t want to be in Philly, but Morey’s plan is to convince Simmons to play for them again once they get Damian Lillard at draft time.

Keep in mind that the Stepien Rule allows trades of future picks to be only traded in back to back years.

Tobias Harris and Philly’s 2022/23/25/27 1st round picks with some swaps in there for Lillard. By itself that works straight up. I would suspect Portland would ask for Maxey (won’t happen) and Thybulle (might) or something like that. But that’s really immaterial. That’s just semantics and negotiating mainly. And if I’m the Sixers, I’m not just giving away Tyrese Maxey either. Dude is good.

James Harden? He’s in line for a lot of money in Brooklyn and leaving there costs him 75 million dollars. Morey might prefer Harden to Lillard but he can’t wait 2 years to get Harden. So he’ll ‘settle’ for Lillard once it becomes clear Portland has little reason to not blow it all up and start over again with some draft capital from Philly, a few pieces of their own, and whatever they get from McCollum/Powell trades.

Harden isn’t available, and I’m not sure how a Beal deal looks since he doesn’t have multiple years left on his deal. Therefore the Harris plus lots of picks/swaps for Lillard deal. At this point, Morey tells Simmons we don’t need you to score, we just need you to do you. Joel and Dame got the scoring, you got everything else and we’re going to put the right balance of pieces to make this work.

Seems crazy right? Daryl Morey is a cuckoo bird, but he’s also a cuckoo bird who went to MIT. It doesn’t seem too far fetched for a guy who isn’t asking for ridiculous prices in exchange for Simmons like Fox, Haliburton and lots of picks, won’t take John Collins without moving Harris out, etc etc etc. Will it work? Eh, who knows? But I can see a new GM coming in to Portland realizing it has to be blown up, moving out Dame gives not only assets into the Blazers cupboard to play with but makes the Blazers roster worse improving their own pick in the same timeframe. (Note: The picks the Blazers gave up to get Larry Nance are lottery protected and there’s no unprotected pick going Chicago’s way once the protections wear off. There’s nothing to keep Portland from bottoming out. It’s the same scenario that happened with Sac and the JJ Hickson deal.)

I personally don’t want Ben Simmons at the price I’ve seen Sean Cunningham talk about (I just disagree with him on Simmons is all), but I’m not against acquiring him for the right price. But you can’t acquire a player for unreasonable prices and expect it to help you improve with little to no assets to help you do so once you’ve acquired that player. Trading Haliburton and multiple picks and taking on Harris’ contract? Yeah, that doesn’t offer you much of a future. Which is exactly why Morey is asking for that, he knows it’s an impossible deal no GM will agree to.

In the end, all this Woj bomb announced is the Kings won’t likely be linked to Simmons’ rumors anymore because, I suspect, the FO never expected it to happen and they are trying to nip enthusiasm for Simmons in the bud to whatever degree they can. And Philly is telling their fans to not expect a deal for Simmons that isn’t going to be some outlandish one sided deal. Perhaps the most important announcement is to Simmons and Rich Paul notifying them that they can expect the Sixers are going to make a very hard push to keep Ben Simmons an Illadelph Sexer.

Eh, whatever. Still want John Collins more anyway. As always, proof is in the pudding. Monte has a whole lot of mixing ingredients to do to come up with a rabbit out of this hat. Go forth McGenius, we’re all waiting! Just thank goodness it’s not on Ben Simmons.

Simmons proved he’s a disgruntled prima donna by his refusal to play. Kings don’t need that attitude, we have enough issues internally as is. We need to move a few of the team out and get some better players (or players with a higher ceiling) as kind of a reset, just keeping Hali and Fox as they’ve stated they plan on

Pick a lane and stick with it. Trade Hield, Barnes and Holmes for young players and picks and get under the cap to sign some RFA to a max offer sheet. Charlotte got Bridges and Suns got Ayton and dare these notoriously cheap owners to match.

That’s unfortunate. I think his style of play would have brought on a culture change. More thatn anything else. He’s a Winner. An All Star, and He would help change the morass of the this sorry franchise. If he suceeded here, it would also draw interest from other FA’s, if the Kings started winning consistently.

The team will probably make some moves. But, If the Kings are planning to build around Fox//Hali? I think it’s a dead end. Fox will probably never be an All Star( Not in the West) Hali looks like a good player. But, I don’t see an Anthony Edwards type ceiling. Not even close.

I heard all the names Sabonis, Grant, Turner, etc. None of them really get me amped. I also don’t think any of them help this team rise above anything more than mediocre or average long term.

This team won’t do a proper rebuild. Young Assets, Expirings and Picks. So, the plan?
Once again, I think it’s more role players coming in. Players Monte/Vivek believe are the missing pieces to being a playoff team. Role Players.

I see players like Hart, Schroeder, Morris, etc, etc. SSDY

Yes, someone who would help transform the Kings into a team that can play competitive NBA defense. Someone who can distribute the ball well, and score better away from Embiid.

Wouldn’t want any of that. Kings might actually get better.

There isn’t one player on the Kings that is better than Simmons. He’s a triple double threat every time he steps in the court. You can add up all the Kings players on this squad and Simmons still has more accolades than them. Yes, he didn’t handle the situation in Philly right but the organization did as well.

I feel like we’ve already had at least one of these about Simmons.

who hasn’t played all season, citing mental health reasons

If and when Simmons is traded to a new team at the deadline, is it entirely possible he suits up immediately, and how would that be justifiable?
That it was only the toxic work environment that contributed to his mental health decline, but the new organization fixed the issue?

Good luck trying to spin that in the media if he landed in Sacramento — easily more toxic than any other organization in the league.

Simmons will play again somewhere and be more valuable than any current King ! Likely have a chance to watch him kill the Kings on a regular basis !

Yes, but we’ll still have Sutter’s Fort, Fairy Tale Town, and John Collins. The 36-win life this place prays for and deserves.

He may kill the kings on another team but he will kill the Kings a lot more if we make the trade Philadelphia is proposing.

Breaking news?? Did anyone actually think we would get Simmons? The Kangz will do what the Kangz always do. Trade our end of bench guys for another team’s end of bench guys. Another Delon for Tristan type trade. The FO will still try to sell us on a playoff appearance. I’ll believe it when I see it and Morey hasn’t done anything to make me believe it.

What do you expect them to do. Give away Haliburton and all their future draft choices for a prima donna. In this case I agree they need to look elsewhere. Let Philly pay him for not playing and letting his teammates down. For a franchise that has a real culture problem, do you want to bring in this guy.

Missing my point. Simmons was NEVER coming here. It was wishful thinking. If the asking price was so crazy, I would bring him in without question. Remember what was being said about Webber when we traded for him. Richmond was a well respected, fan favorite, and an All-Star. Talent wins games. Yes, we need to change our losing culture. The easiest way to do that is accrue better talent.

That’s exactly what I expect them to do. You want a true star in Sacramento, grow a sack and take a fucking swing. Hali will never carry Simmons’ jock, and neither will the firsts or anyone else on this roster. As far as the prima donna cuckoo bird stuff, I see a guy who doesn’t want to play with teammates and coaches who throw him under the bus in press conferences. Is that too much to ask, wanting to play with guys who have your back? Also, I haven’t heard a pubic peep about any of this from Simmons, unlike big mouth diva Embiid and impulsive can’t help himself Doc Rivers. Sorry, they’re the ones who let a teammate down and started a toxic situation. I believe Simmons would come here with everything to prove and would be the greatest thing that happened to this team since Chris Webber.

Put him in the high post as a PF and see if he can be around a 50% shooter from the elbow in pick and roll action and this dude could be the second coming of Chris Webber.

Stay the course. The Team is tied for the 5th pick. They will have sole possesion of 5th tomoroow when Embiid contnues his monstrous Jan. Don’t trade anyone. Unless you’re getting back young assets, exprirings, or picks. But, Nooooooo….This team will make dumb lateral trade moves. These new role players will help the team win a few more games, Still miss the play in and end up with the 10th pick. Don’t we all see this shizzle coming.

It’s Maddening how retarded one organization can be. Won’t commit to a Top 5 pick, Will continue to chase a playin, and deluded into thinking Fox/Hali is one piece or a couple bench players away from a potent core. You have one Harvard grad and one Billionaire. Neither, knows a damn thing about basketball and ;less in running an NBA organization.

All the teams below the Kings: Magic, Pistons, Hous, and OKC have a plan. All of these teams are young, loaded with picks, and some of them already have core pieces in place.

Kings have No solid bigs, No stretch 4’s, No real wings, and No All Star,
But, it all starts with culture. No foundation, no one is accountable (from the front office to the coaching staff and players)

I have a feeling Morey will offer Simmons as predicted and the Nets will be like, “Nope!” The Nets know Morey’s pipe dream is Harden and will do the same shit Morey’s been doing to the rest of the league. Morey will run the team to the ground over Harden.
