The other shoe never dropped

This year was the gift that kept on giving.
By | 53 Comments | Apr 6, 2023

Last night I watched the Sacramento Kings lose a game on a random Wednesday night in April as the season winds down. Not an uncommon occurrence over the years. And, like most years, I wasn’t overly concerned about the loss. But whereas most years I wasn’t worried about April losses because they helped our lottery odds, this year I wasn’t worried about the loss because the Kings were still secure as the three seed in the Western Conference.

Sure, a win would have been nice. The Kings still had a slim shot at overtaking the Memphis Grizzlies for the two seed, and that shot is most likely gone now, but it’s hard to be upset at *just* being the third seed.

I think back to the preseason and our most optimistic hopes for this team. I think back to starting 0-4 and feeling like maybe the preseason had been just another mirage. I think back to the Kings then winning 10 of their next 12 games, including a 7-game win streak that really helped us start to believe in this squad. I think about all these highlights throughout the course of this season, every milestone, and that feeling that at any moment the other shoe would drop, that we would wake up from this dream, that something would go wrong.

But the other shoe never dropped. The Kings ended the playoff drought. The Kings won the Pacific Division. The Kings clinched the third seed in the playoffs. This season has been a massive success in every way.

In the coming weeks Mike Brown should be named Coach of the Year. Monte McNair should be named Executive of the Year. Keegan Murray should be named to the All-Rookie team. De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis should be named to the All-NBA Team. Now, one of two of these things may not happen, but they are all things that should happen. But no matter what, one thing we know will happen is the Kings will host a first round playoff series.

Every day I check that rapidly-changing Western Conference Standings, but I’m not worried about the first-round matchup. The Warriors, the Lakers, the Clippers, they’re all dangerous for the same reason. They are deeply flawed teams but are led by future Hall-of-Famers who can single-handedly swing a playoff series. And yet, I believe the Kings could advance past any of them. Any of those would likely be a tough but entertaining series. With any of these matchups, I’m not so confident that I would expect the Kings to beat any of them.

But this entire season has been about the Kings defying expectations, so I’m content to sit back and watch what happens next.

Well said Greg

It is an amazing testament how quickly I have fallen into expecting things of this team. Us being not only competent but good feels correct in this teams brilliance but also for this city. We deserve this.

I also love that its happened by diverting from consensus as it did in the glory years. I will be the first to admit to believing my armchair GMing was the way out of this mess. Preached maximizing lottery odds and strip downs from StR to hear (often incessantly sorry folks).

Last night though also demonstrated that possible reality too. Regardless of the result Watching godly gifted hoopers trade ISO possession to ISO possession looks cartoonish to this teams schemes.

The tenets of our basketball love in Sacramento has always been on collectivism over heliocentrism. I may have forgotten that over those dark years. Ive joked all year the Kings are only good with a passing big man and an on par giving committee. It may be a stretch but we are the proletariat of professional basketball, if we like it or not. In both in market and how we find success that seems a common thread to when things are good.

And lets not forget it. After all the ball moves faster than people do. If Democracy on the floor is the method I welcome it. A more enjoying watch and better metaphor. It’s led to a historic offense again.

Im excited for all of us. Regardless of what comes next this team represents near everything that made our city basketball fanatics in the first place. Thats all you can ask for.

At season’s start, I was pretty confident that Sacramento could get into the top six, but had no belief that they could manage a first-round home series. I was concerned that I might be giving Mike Brown too much credit with my expectations, even though I was very happy about his hiring.

Like a lot of us, I wasn’t giving him nearly enough.

Part of what has made this season so great to watch and follow is how I came in with such low expectations and how much this team blew past them, because I was always in the “show me, Kings, don’t tell me.” Starting the season 0-4, I pretty much was thinking that it was going to be another long season. Even in January, I wanted to see the team not let a lose or two effect them mentally. I was nervous that post All-Star break, because of the tough schedule, the team would start to flounder, but it never happened. I think the 176-175 2OT win against the Clippers really cemented in me how real this team was this year.

I for one had predicted that we would end up as the 3rd seed, so whether they’ve been winning/losing lately hasn’t been a big deal for me. Let’s get our rest, preparation, and be ready for that playoff run. I am fully enjoying the ride.

The consistent winning a few weeks after the all-star break was really where I began to understand, balls to bone, that this team was legit and ready for the next level.

When you come to think of historic facts, NBA Champions normally are the No. 1 to 3 seeds. So yep, it’s not really crazy to think about it man.

Look, despite the Kings being the 3-seed, they could be look upon as underdogs against almost anyone the may face in the first-round, and that it because of the same HISTORY that the Kings haven’t been good for quite some time.

It’s also because of HISTORY that the Warriors will be favored against the Kings because of their Championship HISTORY (same with the Lakers).

Heck, the Clippers are also favored because of Kawhi’s HISTORY being a Champion and Finals MVP, and Paul George’s HISTORY of being always in the Playoffs (though somewhat, always choking).

So yep, we could think of the Championship because we are also looking at History here. #LTB.

I too was waiting for the other shoe, but there came a point in time where I just had to accept that the team was good and just get over myself and enjoy the ride!

I’m thrilled that every guy on the roster, from 1 to 15, is a good guy and easy to root for. And unlike many other years, there are no malcontents, dipshits, or questionable character guys on the roster. Just a bunch of team first dudes that play hard and want to win.

Next is the type of basketball being played. Moving, screening, cutting, ball movement- excellent basketball! No horns, 1-4 flat, or iso ball bs here. No 40% USG guys pounding the dribble for 17 seconds of the shot clock.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, there are competent people running things, with synergy from top to bottom. Even Vivek seems to have figured out that a huge key to franchise sucess is hiring qualified, competent people and staying out of their way while they do their jobs.

As for our most likely 1st round playoff opponents, I’m neutral on the Clips and they’re just an obstacle in our way that needs to be removed. As for the Lebrons and the Ws, I can’t stand them, so sending either (or both!) home would make this season that much sweeter.

On to the playoffs!

I am hoping for a championship like all those above comments but realistically its going to take a team effort. Monty brought in shooters through FO,trades and the draft. along with others like Barnes and Lyles. We have the shooters now are they going to shoot. Each night of the playoffs it would be great if they all shot really good but this is not realistic. I would hope two thirds would connect each night to it be realistic to win. Other teams in the playoffs have good three point shooters so the deciding factor is how we play defense. Not only defense on those good outside shooters but also defending straight line drives and not letting teams to get offensive rebounds. We can shoot but can we defend. If we do both then I say yes we can win a championship. We might have a couple bad nights but its going to depend what we do the other nights. GO KINGS!!!

My biggest take away is that I can finally let go of the Luka fiasco. I am so much happier to have our team now than to have Luka and struggling to make the play in. I can finally let it all go. We got a great team that is a joy to watch. I don’t care if Bagley becomes an All Star. I don’t care if Luka wins MVP someday. The Sacramento Kings are for real and here to stay. This is just the beginning. We our building something special..

I keep thinking how good the Kings would be now if they’d drafted Jaren Jackson Jr at the 2 spot. Rim protector, good shooter big body inside. I think he and Sabonis would work well together. Could’ve traded the 2 for the 4 and gotten him and another key asset.

But if the Kings had drafted JJJ, they likely wouldn’t have drafted Hali in 2020. There is always the chance that the dominos might have fallen that way, but doubtful the situation would have played out for the Kings to have JJJ and Sabonis today.

I sometimes think back to 1999 when I had the option of going on a third date with this really hot frisky blonde girl I had met in my second year of college. She had the hots for me, and it was triple on my end. It was going to be fun! I instead passed and went to a party with my roommates for reasons I can’t remember. I met my future wife at that party and have two lovely daughters to thank for it today. I wouldn’t change a thing about that decision, despite the results I might have had with that blonde…who’s name and face I can’t even recall.

My “butterfly flaps its wings” story starts with me drinking two bottles of MD 20/20 in nineteen dickety six and getting arrested and ends with ridiculous career success and meeting my wife,

It’s hard for me to offer different draft/FA/trade scenarios for the Bills or Kings – they have both ended up as my favorite version of themselves. Whether either one leads to a championship is yet to be seen, but the general form is there.

I agree. For the first time, I’m not envious of Dallas with Luka. I love this current team while at the same time seeing the flaws in Luka’s game.

Simply put, would the Kings be better today if they had drafted Luka over Bagley? I’m not sure that is the case. Chances are Vlade would still be running the show and Luke Walton could still be coaching this team to the late lottery.

Passing on Luka beget Haliburton in 2020 (who turned into Sabonis in 2022), Mitchell in 2021, Murray in 2022. In my mind, there is zero chance the Kings have Sabonis, Mitchell, and Murray if they had drafted Luka, and the same could be said for the Barnes trade.

A butterfly flaps its wings, hindsight is 20/20, etc. but the Kings would not be where they are today if things had gone different, and I’m fairly sure they wouldn’t be any better either. IMO, it might be akin to Detroit taking Darko over Carmelo. It did absolutely nothing for Detroit and left them with an absolute embarrassment of a pick…but in the end did nothing for Denver either, other than all first round playoff exits and one single deep playoff run before trading Melo away.

Yep. I’ve been thinking the same thing. The Kings clearly would have been better over the previous several years, but with Vlade ruining the show and Walton likely coaching, I think they’d probably be worse than Dallas has been every year, and definitely including this one.

Have a rec. Mostly because Luka’s ball dominance is the antithesis of what seems to be the Sacramento way of playing ball; passing, cutting, team oriented, and fun, and I don’t know if that’s even in his bag at this point.

Luca Doncic is a really good basketball player but Luca Doncic is also a basket case.Watching him on the court is one of the reasons the Mavericks are where they are. A complainer a whiner and a disrupter which IMO goes a long way as a loser. I am glad he didn’t play for the Kings. Acts like a 6 year old who didn’t get what he wanted for Christmas,

As much as I hated Cousins and the entirety of that era for a variety of reasons, I’m wont to agree with this actually. Luka is worse dealing with the refs than Cousins was. Which is pretty astounding to me, but that’s a different discussion.

Lightning in a bottle?

To my mind, much of this season’s storyline comes down to exquisite timing.

Mike Brown has spoken frequently about his journey as a coach and a person, what he has learned along the way, from his prior varied experiences and mentors. He is, in the moment, a coach we all appreciate and love and respect, but would he have had the same success with the team had we gotten the 10-years ago version of himself?

The pre-draft discussions often went heavily along the lines of 19-year-old potential vs. 22-year-old “low ceiling”. But the discussion of “individual superstar talent” vs. “consummate team player” will always be there (examples: would you rather have Iverson or Nash? J-Will or Bibby?). Results may vary, for different situations and different teams, even the relative impact of those aforementioned players in different team situations. I would argue, however, that for THIS team (even though it was nothing close to a “veteran team” needing just a couple small holes filled), that we have benefitted tremendously from the “maturity” of “older” rookies Davion and Keegan, who have displayed abilities and contributions and grasped team concepts that have impacted the team game more than some exciting “superstar” (“and he just turned 20”) rookies with gaudier stats.

For Monte McNair, maybe he was lucky he wasn’t hired prior to the Luka draft. He might have nailed that pick in the moment, but as several recent TKH contributors have noted, maybe in the long run we are better off as a team. And would trading for a 3-years-younger Domas have been as successful? Building around a 5-years-younger De’Aaron?

So much of players’ career success is timing-dependent, with the growth that comes from experience. How many of basketball’s best players (let’s say top 100 in the league) have had their best success with their first team? Malik, Huerter, Lyles, Barnes, and others are all experiencing “bests” (or at least probably “most funs”) at this time in their career arcs.

It makes for an exciting manifestation of “the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts”.

So while I can and mostly do appreciate the mindset of “I’ll just enjoy the ride, because this is just the beginning of a multi-year building process”, I also find myself succumbing to the fleeting (but not infrequent) thoughts that maybe, just maybe, the Kings have captured lightning in a bottle.

They have, in less than a full season together, learned to execute an exquisite offense (just as the circa 2002 team did), and are learning to play a team defense (as did the circa 2002 team, without stellar individual defenders other than arguably Christie and Jackson). They are maximizing individual abilities and strengths, but also growing and diversifying the applications of their skills to different game situations. They have already learned to win on the road, win the tough close ones, win the ugly ones, and beat the good teams.

So, I’m right there thinking, Look out, all you media-favored big-market teams, with your superstars, with your draft-deadline free-agent mercenaries, with your advantage of referee bias, and with your planned load managements, because you might not fear the beam, but you should definitely fear the lightning.

Lighting the beam happens when a person / team pushes the button. And the other team can work to prevent that pushing of the button. But how to stop lightning in a bottle? Lightning happens on its own timing, of its own accord, with momentary instantaneous aligning of the necessary but not well-defined atmospheric elements. And when it happens, there are obliterated trees and scorched earth left behind.

Ask Villanova vs. Georgetown.

Ask US vs Soviet Union hockey.

Ask hobbled Kirk Gibson vs. Dennis Eckersley.

Ask Lorenzo Charles and Christian Laettner and Jalen Suggs and all those other 3-point makers in March Madness.

Remove the cap off the bottle holding the lightning, and what do you get? (hint: a BEAM shooting up??)

Lightning does happen, and you might be the media-favored King of the Hill but you don’t want to be standing around admiring your hair standing up when it does.

Go Kings, I have loved every minute of this season.

Lightning the Beam.

I predicted this team could win 45 games at the start of the season, simply based off the roster and the addition of a coach who actually…. coaches.

And to be honest, I waited for the “other shoe to drop” as well, pretty much up until about 2 weeks after the ASG. There was a brutal stretch in there where the Kings not only managed to keep their head above water, but actually gained in the standings by beating teams they needed to beat that they likely would have folded against in years past. I really didn’t think we’d keep the 3 seed, but here we are. We’ve gone from hoping against all odds this team would make it into the playoffs to having home court advantage in the first round and, depending on how things shake out, might have home court advantage in round 2 as well. I don’t care what anyone says but not one single soul on this earth saw this coming. Its absolutely beautiful and I’m enjoying every last second of it.
Go Kings!
