Snackramento: Burritos

The gang builds their own burritos and discuss the best burrito spots in town.
By | 57 Comments | May 20, 2020

Welcome back to Snackramento!

On this week’s episode Will demands that everyone respect his burrito knowledge, yet he makes another questionable choice. Richard goes straight to the source for his Mexcian Missile, a tortilla factory in Lodi that sells meat by the pound and tamales by the dozen. Kevin keeps it wet and sloppy, as always.

Here are our local recommendations for burrito spots:

Richard – La Campana & Ali Baba

First I’m going to go with my traditional pick, La Campana. This hole in the wall, or rather hole-in-the-side-of-a-tortilla-factory, is an absolute gem for classic mexican take out. Everything here is as fresh as possible and astonishingly cheap. Most burritos are $6 and nothing is over $8, with the exception of their buy-in-bulk section where you can get meat, beans, rice, tortillas or salsa by the pound. You honestly can’t go wrong here, just take your pick. And don’t forget to grab a fresh baked Mexican pastry on the way out the door.

For the unconventional route, I have to give it up to Ali Baba in downtown Davis. This is a middle eastern restaurant that had a stroke of genius on the breakfast burrito front. French fries, honey, and tapatio comprise the elixir that takes things next level. Their meat option includes bacon and beef gyro while the veggie opts for avocado and mushroom. Both are truly phenomenal. This is one of the few restaurants that I will drive an hour or more to visit.

Kevin – La Fiesta

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good burrito. Having said that and I know this is going to upset many of you, it’s just not something I usually end up picking when I’m deciding what to eat. I understand they’re great but if i’m at a sit down Mexican restaurant or even a little taqueria, I’m normally not getting a burrito because well€¦ it’s not Mexican food!! There are dozens of other things on the menu, recipes for which have been handed down from generation to generation, that these places generally do better than a burrito. Fight me.

Now that i’ve gotten that disclaimer out of the way, i’ll just say that I wanted to approach this episode €œscientifically.€ Which is why I headed over to Twitter to ask my followers where I’d be able to find the best burrito in Sacramento proper. And the results were about as scientific as you’d imagine. By that I mean, they weren’t at all. I got like 20 different answers and people rarely agreed that any one place was actually any good at all. The one recurring suggestion among all that noise was La Fiesta Alteña Taqueria, so I placed an order right away.

I went with the wet al pastor Super Burrito and it did NOT disappoint. Maybe this is weird but when I do order a burrito, I tend to gravitate towards getting it €œwet€ if it’s an option. I can only assume anyone reading this is cultured enough to have experimented with the wet burrito but If you haven’t tried it before, you need to remedy that right away. Sure you have to eat it with a fork but if done right, you’re NEVER going to get a more flavorful burrito experience. Combine that with the GOAT protein source that is al pastor and you should generally have a winner on your hands. Anyway, despite basically none of my followers being able to agree on a great burrito spot in the city, I was very happy with La Fiesta Alteña Taqueria on Alhambra. I was happy to see they were still open and doing take out during the COVID lockdown and I’ll definitely be making an attempt to check them out again soon.

Will – Butt3rmilk Cafe

First, I want to acknowledge the 800 foot wrap in the room: this podcast only ends with Kevin, Richard and I in a mano a mano a mano fight to the death outside of some German fuzion soup factory that opens up at the Ice Blocks in 2023. I also want to say that I’m not scared, as I’ve already begun my training in the deadly art of throwing ladles. Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I really want to hype you up to this wonderful little spot down off of Florin-Perkins. It’s certainly a location with that hole-in-the-wall feel and the food there not only matches the feel of good diner food, but far, far surpasses it. As I will have a tendency to do with this podcast in the coming months, I wanted to try to bring something a little different to the table, so I suggested a Bulgogi Wraprito. Rich, flavorful beef, sticky white rice, cheese and just enough Korean hot sauce to give it that extra oomph – this is one of my favorite meals of all time. You could plate this thing at a location down by the capitol, on some china near a carafe of lemon water and people would gladly pay $22 bucks for it. They’re going to be happy to give it to you for ten. Go out and get it from this joint and try to tell me that I’m wrong.

As always please drop your favorite local spots in the comments!

I mentioned this on twitter, but I’m a +1 to La Fiesta on Alhambra. Carnitas Super Burrito from there is absolutely amazing.

My local favorite is ‘El Favorito’ on Folsom Ave in Rancho Cordova. they have this tomatillo/avocado type salsa that I simply refer to as ‘green stuff’ that is absolutely wonderful, and I douse the burrito with it.

That’s funny. We have an El Favorito near where I live in the foothills. Probably not related, but it’s my favorite in our area.

I live in Seattle now, but when I get back to Sactown I always stop by Jimboys. The bean and cheese burrito crisped up on the flat top is a treat. Devastating that the shop on 28th closed for good.

Ah, burritos….the reminder of where I would go for cheap eats or post all-nighter breakfasts when I was in college.

There’s a place right across the street from the San Jose State campus called “La Victoria,” or “La Vics” as we called it. As a frugal college student, since my friends and classmates would spend our weekends working on our animation/illustration homework on campus in the Art Building, and often we would stay there very late into the night, we would often step outside to go on food runs at like 8 or 9pm to grab some grub, and La Vics was one of the cheap eateries we went to….it wasn’t expensive and it was open till 3am every day. If you wanted a $6ish burrito late at night, La Vics was your place. It was well known for its orange sauce spread, but I actually wasn’t a fan of it because it was a little spicy for me. There’s actually another burrito place right next to it called Iquana’s, which I actually preferred over La Vics, but La Vics was more popular.

And I remember sometimes when I would pull all-nighters working on campus, by the time the sun came up, I would head over next door to the Student Union to grab a breakfast burrito. I regret the nights when I stayed up all night working because obviously it wasn’t healthy for me, but man did I look forward to eating a nice hot breakfast burrito when I was done, despite being dead tired.

I legit think a good Del Taco is better than a good Taco Bell.

I think the number of good Del Taco is far lower than the number of good Taco Bells, sadly.

Thanks for the thoughtful analysis, WGriffith!

For Cinco de Mayo this year, we found out that you can’t order food at Mexican restaurants day of–you had to order in advance by a day or earlier.

Sadly, we ended up going to a long line in the drive-thu at a Taco Bell at around 10pm, getting a cheap margarita mix, and watching some weird Selma Hayek movie in place of my favorite Three Amigos. It all just went down hill so fast! I want to blame 2020 for this but I can’t.

I never really found a great burrito stand in Sacramento (again, this was many years ago). My favorite plated burrito was the Chili Verde burrito at Tres Hermanas. For a burrito/taco stand type of take out, my favorite in the area was Taqueria Guadalajara in Woodland. When I was wasting time just after college they also opened a shop in Davis. Dos Gallos in Woodland was also good.

I’m not a big burrito person, but I find La Fiesta on Alhambra to be sub-mediocre at best. I don’t get the recommendation for that place *at all.* There’s got to be somewhere better. Too bad we lost DJ Rick to the Blazers (traitor!) or he might have some good suggestions.

DJ Rick seemed to prefer tacos, so he’s probably like you in not being a big burrito person. 🙂

It’s too bad he left for the Blazers. Even though Portland has awesome food choices, I can’t imagine they would have Mexican food as good as California does.

There is some great Mexican food in Portland, but the ones I know aren’t really the cheap, simple taco stand style. My brother is up there and he’s into food. So I’m sure he’d have some ideas. I may be making this up, but I feel like there’s a lot of Oaxacan cuisine in Portland. LOTS of moles. Whereas most of Mexican influence in my Bay Area town was from the Jalisco area. I wonder if there’s a difference in the immigrant populations of the areas that has led to different types of Mexican cuisine.

Put me down for Don Quixote’s in Rocklin. Not really a hole-in-the-wall/I-might-get-e.Coli kind of place, but still great food at decent prices. A minus for no al pastor, but their carnitas, chicken, and Adobada are all incredible.

I am also here to say Chando’s was talked up a lot to me when I moved back to the area recently, and I’ve only been once but was not blown away.

I hate to nitpick, but I believe there is a mistake at the top and I want to improve my English:
“The gang builds there own burritos and…”
Shouldn’t that be: The gang builds their own burritos?
And this always confuses me: isn’t “gang” singular? So shouldn’t it be: The gang builds its own burritos?

(PSI love to discuss food, but I am rarely in the US, and have not been in Sacramento. Once I will come, I will be sure to ask you all for suggestions.)

Hi, I am not sure if you were at the old site and know me, but a few things.

1. I am half Dutch, half Israeli, and completely Jewish. I live in the Netherlands.

2. A sizable part of my family was murdered in WWII. I know the US is a free country and I have no real issue with the use of the term grammar nazi. However, I find the gratuitous use of pictures of Hitler, swastika’s, and the nazi salute distasteful, to say the least. Maybe you care, maybe you don’t. Just FYI.

3. English is not my mother tongue, but I love learning it and its intricacies and I try to improve all the time, so that one day I can write posts like TJ Macias. So I am still hoping someone can give an answer to my question above.

Thank you.

You’re right about “there” and “their.”

And this always confuses me: isn’t €œgang€ singular? So shouldn’t it be: The gang builds its own burritos?

Both are correct and widely used, but “its” may he slightly more correct. You wouldn’t be wrong either way.

I am rarely in the US

This is probably wise.

I registered just to comment on this post. Mexican food is my favorite food, and I think Sacramento is pretty respectable in its offerings. We certainly have plenty of choices, so you can probably find something you like. But I have to admit, although it’s my favorite cuisine, I’m not particularly picky about Mexican food. Just point me toward the nearest taqueria, and I’ll be happy. That said, if you’re talking about favorite burritos, here are a couple of mine.

Probably my absolute favorite burrito in Sac sadly no longer exists. RIP El Faro in the Pocket area. They had a vegetarian burrito with actual fresh vegetables in it (as opposed to simply a super burrito sans meat). Zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, corn, tomatoes, onions, beans, and cheese. So good.

As for burritos you can actually still get, back when I lived in midtown, I loved the chile colorado burrito from Jalapenos on 21st. Also, although it’s not at all traditional Mexican faire, I enjoy the paella burrito from Dos Coyotes. As for overall restaurants, Tres Hermanas and Chando’s (not worth waiting in a long line for, but I don’t think that still a thing) are both reliably good. However, my personal favorite is Lalo’s in South Sac.

My favorite is the carnitas burrito at Taqueria Jalisco on 16th, along with a side of fries. Like candy.

To me, burritos are a “high floor/low ceiling” food – a Mexican restaurant would have to work hard to make a bad burrito. There’s not much differentiation between high-end burritos, IMO.

But if I had to pick a favorite, there’d probably be four or five places I like. Primarily, I’ll hit the Taqueria El Dorado in EDH and Fernando’s in Cameron Park. Hell, even Chipotle is pretty good in a pinch.

My initial reaction was negative to french fries in a burrito, but I could maybe see it from a textural standpoint. I think french fries in a burrito is a Salvadoran thing, right?

I think it’s Californian. I don’t think potatoes play a big role in Salvadoran food. Maybe fried yucca in place of potatoes? Personally, I’ll take the burrito at La Taqueria in SF. No rice/potato/nada. Just meat, beans, salsa, and cheese if you ask for it. But it’s crazy flavorful and not as much of a gut bomb.

Still haven’t listened yet—so many Herald podcasts to catch up on! So I apologize if this was addressed…..

Question: Can a burrito be “too stuffed/too big”? Do you know what I mean? When you order a burrito and the chef is struggling to fold it because they put so many ingredients in it? I ask because sometimes I’ve felt the burrito was too big to handle properly and just became a mess.

Absolutely! I’ve tended to move away from those giant burritos and look for something a bit more manageable. IMO you should be able to hold a burrito in one hand and peel the paper/foil with the other. It’s the contents that count.

One time I went to Taquiera Jalisco after a weekend swim workout, right when they opened. The owner was there and he was apologetic, said he had to get a massive lunch catering order out and his grill was full, it would be twenty minutes or so before he could transition the kitchen, asked if I would wait. No problem, I have nothing better to do than so sit here and watch the homeless walk by. Cool he said.

So for the next 30 minutes or so he would yell “HEY!”, and dish me out a spoonful of pork from the catering order. Every five minutes I got a dollop of seasoned meat on a paper plate while I waited. I love that place.

When I go to the store to make burritos, I look for large wraps still. I see the “burritos” wraps that say they are burrito sized. I’m not making taquitos, talking Burritos. It is probably laziness though in making more of them.

Happy to help.

A wet burrito is just a standard burrito but covered with melty cheese and a red or green chili/enchilada sauce. It’s not portable like the traditional burrito as it’s served on a plate and you have to eat it with a knife/fork but it can be really really good.

Gordito burrito was my spot when I was at sac state, then really like adalbertos California or breakfast burrito, something about their grease after a lot of drinking lol, now I prefer jimboys (their beans taste like no other) and dos coyotes for their freshness
