The Sacramento Kings released Episode 2 of The Run via YouTube today. The ongoing series gives Kings fans a behind the scenes look at the Kings progression through the season as they attempt to end the team’s playoff drought and make a run at the playoffs.
Within the first two minutes, you will be ready to run through a wall for Jordi Fernandez. He is the star of this episode. Jordi was head coach of the Kings summer league squad, and this episode takes us through the California Classic and the early stages of free agency, including the signing of Malik Monk and the trade for Kevin Huerter. One thing I firmly believe: Jordi Fernandez will be a head coach in the NBA sooner rather than later.
One of my favorite moments is Jordi telling the squad “we’re here to get you a job.” He breaks it down that if that means the NBA great, if it means an NBA two-way that’s fine too. “If it’s G League, I was a head coach in the G League.” Jordi breaks down that the goal of summer league is to highlight the abilities and strengths of players and help them further their career. He also talks about the difference between caring about winning and losing, versus being a fighter and caring about how you win or lose. I couldn’t help but think about DeMarcus Cousins as I listened to that speech.
My final favorite moment came as Kings Assistant GM, VP of Player Development (and Stockton Kings GM) Paul Johnson showed Kevin Huerter the practice facility. Huerter mumbles to himself “it’s a sanctuary”. I already liked the Huerter trade, but I love a guy who thinks about the practice facility in those terms.
Be sure to check out the whole episode. It’s a really cool series the Kings are sharing with us. The next episode looks like it will focus on the Vegas portion of Summer League, including the epic Double OT game against the Orlando Magic.
I can’t wait.
Oh wow. I didn’t think they’d leave the f-bombs in the video uncensored (not that I have a problem with it).
Fuck it, we deserve those f-bombs.
Bjeli rec’d
holy smokes I love that guy and his mentality. that is the type of toughness we need, from the ground up, love to see it!
Past summer league champions.
Showing more inside a summer league game than any actual game in recent history.
Maybe they are continuing this show into the season hoping to somehow connect the summer league events to the actual season?
I think it’s supposed to continue all season long. Which I find really nice given the total lack of transparency from the team since the new ownership group took over.
UGH meetings all morning. This will have to wait till lunch.
Cool video. Jordi speaks Catalán also, which has to count for something.
