Report: The Kings pick has been “prevalent in trade conversations” heading into the 2020 Draft

The Kings currently own the 12th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, but it could be on the move.
By | 42 Comments | Nov 10, 2020

Sacramento Kings

ESPN’s lead draft guru Jonathan Givony dropped a lengthy NBA Draft Intel column on Monday that included several rumors and notes as we inch closer to the November draft. The lone noteworthy bit of news regarding the Sacramento Kings detailed the apparent availability of the 12th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Picks belonging to the Sacramento Kings (No. 12), Boston Celtics (No. 14), Wolves (No. 17), Dallas Mavericks (No. 18), Brooklyn Nets (No. 19) and Miami Heat (No. 20) are the most prevalent in trade conversations lately, per sources.

There’s no indication of what the Kings are trying to do here, but it’s interesting that Givony characterized Sacramento’s pick as one that is coming up most in trade discussions.

Monte McNair’s old front office in Houston had a reputation for trading draft picks. The Rockets haven’t made a first round selection since 2015 when they selected Wisconsin’s Sam Dekker with the 18th overall pick.

I wouldn’t read too much into this coincidence just yet, though. Daryl Morey was calling the shots in Houston, not McNair, and the Rockets were desperately trying to build a contender around James Harden. They didn’t necessarily need to think longterm and devote energy and resources into developing young players, but it’s an interesting footnote to the rumors that McNair may be trading the Kings pick this year.

Monte McNair did note in his introductory press conference that he wants to “be aggressive whenever the time comes to improve the team” so hearing that the Kings are involved in trade rumors heading into the draft shouldn’t be too surprising.

Yeah as I mentioned in the previous thread, the lack of news with regards to the Kings working out or interviewing a prospect could mean they already have a trade partner and it involves the 12th pick. Whatever trade there is for the Kings, hopefully it would better the team both short and long term.

I really hope it signals the Kings trading away the 12th pick for a good pick next year, for three reasons:

  1. Next year’s draft is better than this one, especially near the top;
  2. There are useful players in this draft, but also available lower down;
  3. it indicates that Vivek is willing to be patient.

If they are trading up, I really hope they are not overpaying for it.

I hope it involves ATL’s #6 and Huerter. Buddy and the #12? Free up some cap space to eat a bad dea for future picks.

I’m down for that, but I don’t think the Celtics say yes. If the Ainge is willing to give up a pick to move up just two spots, then just pick who he wants and call it good.

I’m hoping reports of teams falling in love with Tyrell Terry growing two inches has teams willing to move up to the kings slot for their next years pick or multiple picks from this year.

12 to the Knicks for 27 + 2021 1st.
Basically Nada to the Nets for Prince + 19 (I haven’t actually done the math here, but I’m assuming we can easily make the space.)

Draft some combination of Poku, Bolmaro, Tillman, Bane, Terry, Lewis

Taking Prince and the #19 for nothing is a no brainer for me. Prince improves the Kings and gets them a pick to boot. If that is truly available, the Kings should be pounding on the Nets door. Hell, throw in a 2nd rounder or two to make it happen.

If the knicks are willing to give up a pick in 21, I’d be up for that. Light protections like top 3 protected only.

Buddy was playing some pick up games with some Knicks players…..
12 and Buddy for RJ Barrett.
12 and Buddy for 8 and Robinson….

Let Buddy be King of MSG averaging 30 points and 15 turnovers….

I like you. I’ll take the 2nd option. Robinson is somewhat underrated. We need a rim runner and rim protector.

These reactions €” known as MSG symptom complex €” include:

  • Headache.
  • Flushing.
  • Sweating.
  • Facial pressure or tightness.
  • Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas.
  • Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
  • Chest pain.
  • Nausea.

Sounds like the perfect place for Buddy to go. He’s been giving Sacramento fans these symptoms since he signed his contract.

As long as more comes back than cash, I’m open to possibilities. I feel like the potential to draft a decent player is there at 12, but it is definitely a crapshoot.

Any guesses how likely any trade talks about the pick might be about moving up?

It will be such a gut punch if the Kings trade back for what amounts to cash considerations and/or a future second rounder.

And yet, despite the assumptions that the team is strapped for cash, they brought in a big name assistant in Gentry, quickly backfilled the Beyer opening with an experienced assistant, and brought in an ESPN PBP guy to replace Grant.

How valuable is that staff overall? I’m not a fan of their layoffs either, but if that staff isn’t going to utilized they aren’t going to get paid. That’s how business works, unfortunately.

I don’t believe the 100 million loss figure for a minute, either. It’s just the ancillary development or things that are ancillary given the state of COVID we are living in it would make sense to let employees go.

That said, I don’t think cash strapped is the right term. I think what you are seeing is the limitations of being in an entertainment business that can’t have nearly the direct level of human contact we are accustomed to.

I could see the $100 million figure Ham referenced as something closer to revenue lost across all revenue streams. But any way you look at, it if they’re doing cash calls, then by definition the corporate entity is cash strapped.

The cash call is definitely a sign all is not completely well, I’ll certainly agree with that. Goddamn you Bratz, I’m tired of agreeing with your nuanced points.

I think I need to go kick a puppy to get my kicks on route 66.

They haven’t really expanded on what appeared to be an understaffed front office though. They’ve basically just replaced people who were fired or not retained. I would assume the moves they’ve made have basically been revenue neutral (other than the remaining money Vlade’s deal). Gentry for Igor is probably close to a wash. Grant for Jones part-time can’t be that big of a difference either.

Also, let’s not forget, they’ve laid off a ton of lower-level employees, and CD said on his show they’ve already done a cash call with all the owners. According to Ham, the lost over a 100 million dollars just last season. Amick reported during the GM search that some of the GM candidates were scared off by the compensation package the Kings were offering.

So, they may not be defaulting on their lease any time soon, but I think “cash-strapped” is probably an accurate description of this team’s finances.

Personally, I don’t think the Kings will outright sell the first round pick. First of all it’s illegal under the CBA to sell a first round pick if the seller only receiving cash back in the transaction. Also, Monte doesn’t seem like the type of guy that’s just going to get ripped off. At the very least I’m sure he could procure a protected future first in the deal.

Honestly, this seems like the perfect draft to trade back into the back half of the draft, in exchange for a protected future first. It saves money now, but one could argue it puts the Kings in a better position long-term.

No it’s not Bratz. Teams just don’t give picks away for cash, though, because that’s bad asset management. Usually you can only buy picks in the mid to late 20s.

It’s also true you’re limited to how much cash you can include in trades for a given season (5.617 million for this season which includes the draft).

There’s no way in hell any GM could ever get away with selling a 12th overall pick for just a bit over 5.6 million. That’s an automatic fireable offense. Just the surplus value you’re flushing down the drain is enormous. But technically the Kings could do that. We’ll see, though.

Hmm…I’m no expert but this seems pretty clear:

Cash cannot be the only asset sent out in trade for a first round draft pick. In other words, teams can’t “sell” their first round draft picks, but they can sell second round picks, player contracts or draft rights.

I guess technically it’s possible the #12 pick is different definitionally according to the CBA than the draft rights to a player picked at #12. That just seems like it doesn’t go along with the spirit of the rule. I would think the simplest way to stay within the rule as described above is just to trade the pick to a team that still holds the draft rights to some random 35 year old playing in Turkey, plus cash.

But you and I agree on the overall point. It would be dumb to trade the #12 pick for cash only.

They changed that in the 2016 CBA then. Thanks for that!

Glad I’m wrong, actually. I’m glad teams can’t do that anymore.

The Kings obviously have some roster restructuring to do and have some decent assets, even if they aren’t on great contracts (Hield/Barnes). It makes sense that they would listen to anything. I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think they need to blow it up and rebuild. They are inching closer to a playoff birth with a lot of young assets. I could see a #12 pick/Hield trade bait bring back an asset that makes them appreciably better and could even allow them to break the playoff drought. McNair should obviously be thinking about building around Fox, he can do that by either keeping the #12 or trading it.

I don’t see any possibility of trading the 12 pick and receiving anyone good enough to take a team with a .431 winning percentage to the playoffs, particularly while Lose Walton is calling plays. Even if you package the pick with Hield, or some other player, it won’t get the team to .500.

2021 is loaded with talent, this is, whether on purpose or not, a tank season.

Rumor season has the Kings trying to improve their team. Shocking news at 11.

I don’t know what this rumor means, but I do know the Kings want it to be known that calling them about the 12th pick is worth it to a team that’s willing to make a deal. Which is…..nothing at all.

I don’t waste my time parsing what rumors mean anymore. I do try to figure out how they fit with what actually happens, though, and that’s a bit tricky, too.

Eh, we’ll see.

I’m only optimistic in that compared to the previous Front office they have more league knowledge/contacts and are willing to engage in other teams and have some vision to reshape this roster Time will tell ultimately right
