Sacramento Kings issue statement on the death of George Floyd

The Kings continue to take an active role speaking out against injustices.
By | 56 Comments | May 31, 2020

Credit: Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings and chairman Vivek Ranadive issued a statement on Saturday on the death of George Floyd.

The statement:

€œTo say my heart breaks does not begin to describe the profound sadness, frustration and outrage that I feel in the wake of the horrific murder of George Floyd at the hand of a man whose oath it was to protect and serve. As the father of a son who has chosen a life of service to our country, I know firsthand the honor and grace by which so many men and women in uniform put their lives on the line every single day to keep us safe, but when the actions of a few dishonor that commitment and courage, it has to stop.

€œFor all the hope and promise that our country stands for, the freedom to live without fear from the vitriol and hatred of racism is not a reality for millions of Black Americans. Unfortunately, this is not new. For hundreds of years, innumerable men, women and children have been treated as less than, asked to work twice as hard and taken too early as a result of bias, bigotry and unequal treatment.

€œIt is urgently incumbent on all people to stand up and say enough is enough. Each human life is precious, deserves dignity and matters. I truly believe that we are capable of bending the arc of history towards sensitivity and inclusion for all regardless of race. We can choose love over hate. But it will take everyone. And not only in the aftermath of tragedy and protests, but when it is uncomfortable to stand for what is right and denounce what is wrong. It will take determination and it won’t be easy. We cannot stand by silently. We must work harder than ever to bring people together, give them opportunity and extinguish these flames of hatred. Until then we will find ourselves back here, again, mourning a life taken too soon.

€œOn behalf of the entire organization, my deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of George Floyd at this unthinkable time. Sports have always brought people together, and we remain committed to continuing to use our platform to break down the barriers that divide us, address issues of social injustice and invest in transformational change for Black youth in our community. I hope you join me in this fight, the legacy we leave for the next generation and countless lives depend on it.€

In a time when organizations and teams put out generic platitudes that barely say anything at all, I admire the way Vivek and the Kings continue to make direct statements to address societal issues. This continues a trend they set in the wake of the Stephon Clark killing, and efforts the organization has taken since then to partner with the Build.Black. Coalition.

As protests, destruction, looting, and violence continue in Sacramento and across the country, we hope you all stay safe.

A for this, F for being among the first NBA teams to furlough staff. Like all of us, they can do a little better.

Speaking as someone who was unexpectedly furloughed, it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. That might change come August, but for now it isn’t so terrible.

Horrible times.

As a privileged white guy from across the ocean, I know I cannot truly imagine what many people are going through there.

I wish everyone health, wisdom and mutual respect.

I’ve worked with computers and IT for over 35 years. I’ve always thought that technology was great, useful and harmless.

Many who know me, have wondered why I don’t have a smart phone. I’m and IT guy, why not? I always thought that getting away from it was also good. The smart gadgets made technology too close to me and I needed a break. I could fix a computer problem anywhere .. be pagedanywhere. Always online ..

That is something that I need to self filter from and learned for being in IT for a long time.

I now see that a riot in Minnesota can cause riots in cities throughout the country. Politics incite unrest. People get on there soap box and broadcast their opinions .. no matter how racial and they get an audience.

All through social media. Please think what you post and now recognize the outcome. Some information is not worth sharing if it causes death, destruction, or injury to others.

Think about what your sharing and how it will effect your audience and perhaps it will go viral .. beyond your intended audience. Then don’t post it, if you think it could go wrong.

I am extremely disappointed in people.

Assuming social media is the issue here ignores history, primarily the anti-war protests of the 60’s.

Information may disseminate quicker, but the murder of George Floyd is primarily to blame.

From my perspective. It is a lot like the scientists who built the bomb and hoped it would never be used. Then feeling morally disappointed that it had to be. I’m an IT guy, who helped create social media. I now have regrets in how it is being used badly. It is being used in hurting people in a lot of ways. If the point was lost, I’ll give it this one more try. I’ll be silent on this going forward. It has nothing to do with the current issues we want to talk about.

Without social media, do the men that lynched George Floyd ever face the consequences of their actions?

I get what you’re saying. The clear and obvious difference is that the bomb is a purely destructive force. Social media isn’t inherently constructive or destructive. It can and has been used for extreme good, extreme evil and all things in between. Like most tools, it isn’t social media that is flawed so much as the humans that use it. If social media went away tomorrow, those flaws would remain (as they always have). As Otis points out, social media isn’t the reason George Floyd is dead. But it IS the reason we know about it. And if there is any justice in the case, much less any positive changed in society that may come of it, social media will have played a large role in facilitating it. Much of social media is a cesspool, but it’s only a reflection (and amplification) of society. If we want to make social media better, we have to make ourselves better.

It’s not social media that’s the problem. It’s people. Unless people change, nothing changes. You can change or censor social media all you want but if injustice is still being done, what changed?

I will make the assertion that the single greatest advancement for the cause of racial justice is the invention of the cell phone camera (and the ability to post the results on social media I suppose). Prior to that all claims regarding incidents of racial injustice were outright ignored because people didn’t want to believe them and because there was no evidence to back up their claims. That is no longer true because we can be shown what happened and can no longer live in denial of the truth. IMNSHO that is something you can be proud of.

Worthy news almost always get out, goes “viral,” and has been for centuries. Social media just expedites it.

Stay safe out there everyone. There are a few organizations you can research and donate to (that I have done so as well) if you want to help make a positive difference.

I am proud of the solidarity of everyone here. Systemic racism and racism in general is alive in this country. I’ve had an experience with racism before and unless we speak out, it will always be an issue.

I know it’s a hard topic for a basketball blog, but for once it has to be heard. Black Lives Matter, not only for them but also for us. We stand with you.

I’d rather post silly pictures and talking sports. Basically have fun. Then there are topics too in your face, that you have to talk about them. Let’s get back to the diversion of Basketball soon. I hope we can shift gears and get back to having fun talking Kings Basketball. We can heal from any bad event. It has been done historically. I’m sad that the Kings Media has to post their support and Sorrow. Perhaps to protect Golden One Center in some weird way. Posts from basketball organizations don’t seem appropriate in current events. At least, it should come from all the NBA? Not a single organization.

Always mind boggling to me that people who don’t agree with a topic always try to paint that there has been a separation of sports and politics. That’s something that has quite literally never been true. Since the begging of sport, politics have ALWAYS intertwined with them.

I feel that this takes a lot of the genuineness of the organization’s statement away, when your hired mouthpiece shows this level of tone-deafness. If anyone paid attention to that jackwad there would be protests at both G1C and KHTK.

And I think that Jones is somewhat tight with Webber – he sure has been singing his HOF praises lately. It would not surprise me to see the Jones go longer form on this.

It’s the primary reason I can’t stand the guy. Used to listen to his show way back when, but his vitriol seemed to go up a notch when he was talking about black athletes, especially black quarterbacks (notably, Kordell Stewart and Donovan McNabb).

I just had a text exchange with a close friend. He went all in on discrediting Cousins, Barnes, and Webber, crickets about JJones though.

I guess 3+ ex-coworkers saying the same thing, along with the Sterling audio, just isn’t enough.

Not at all. We both couldn’t stand him, but if now a handful of ex-coworkers have the same opinion of Grant, then to me, they have credibility. You get to know somebody on business trips, IMHO.

It sounds like he had other reasons to not stand Cousins. Personally, I hated his court antics but he was always a great citizen off the court. Really wished he grew out of his court immaturity.

That’s the sad part for me. I haven’t watched a Kings game on tv, or listened to KHTK in the afternoon, for 4+ years. I’d love to though, but you can only disrespect people so many times before they turn away for good.

I mean. this is perfectly on brand for Grant. So I’m not sure why it would be a problem now. It wasn’t a problem with Stephon Clark. Don’t get me wrong, if this is somehow the straw that breaks the camel’s back, then great! Personally, I would simply love it if people, specifically players (current and past), simply froze him out. Don’t tune into his show, even if you’re just tuning in to here what face-palmy thing he says next. Don’t interact with him on social media. His ratings and “impressions” are his life blood. Take that away and he’s gone.
