Kings 122, Warriors 115: The stars lead the way

Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox drove the Kings to a close victory.
By | 102 Comments | Nov 13, 2022

Credit: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

Kings fans are a well-trained group. Over the last 16-plus years, we’ve been conditioned to accept the same reality over and over and over again. If Sacramento is in a close game with a narrow lead, they’ll almost certainly blow it, especially if the opposing team is sporting a hot-shooting All-Star or two. Shots will miss, rebounds will carom randomly into opponents’ hands, and the Kings will leave open three-pointers to sink dagger after dagger.

Those things aren’t happening this year.

Tonight, the Kings took care of business against an inferior team, just like a playoff hopeful should. After a Klay Thompson three-pointer handed the Warriors a 111-109 lead midway through the fourth quarter amidst a mini-Sacramento collapse, the Kings ended the game on a 13-4 run to put the Warriors away for good, marking the sixth win in eight games for Sacramento. Domantas Sabonis wrecked everyone, putting up 26 points, 22 boards, and 8 assists, while De’Aaron Fox carried the Kings in the fourth, ending the night with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Steph Curry (27 points, 6 boards, 4 assists) and Andrew Wiggins (26 points, 4 rebounds) were the leaders for Golden State, but outside of those two, no one played particularly well for the Warriors in their eighth loss of the season.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
THE GOOD

Welcome Back, Keegan Murray: For the last several games, Keegan Murray hasn’t looked like his confident self, likely due to both personal issues going on, as well as the normal struggles that every first year player faces, but Sacramento’s rookie was on one tonight. Murray put up 21 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals, and he sunk several key shots as Sacramento was putting together different runs. He ended the night 8 of 15 from the field and 5 of 9 from deep.

Metu Minutes: After an incredibly rough preseason, Chimezie Metu seems to have found his role on the team, the same one that Richaun Holmes (DNP-CD) used to hold. As the only vertical threat on the roster with Holmes banished to the end of the bench, Metu has really stepped up over the last several games. He’s only taking three-pointers within the flow of the offense, and those are coming few and far between, while he’s contributing as a switchable option on the perimeter on the defensive end of the floor. He’s by no means a perfect player, but Metu’s recent contributions have been a godsend after Sacramento’s struggles at backup center in the early part of the season.

The stars align: Although Monte McNair massively improved Sacramento’s supporting cast over the offseason, it’s always been understood that the Kings will only go as far as Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox take them, and boy, did those two carry the Kings on Sunday evening. Sabonis was the workhorse all night, as evidenced by his stat line, while De’Aaron experienced a slower start to the game before putting his squad on his shoulders in the fourth quarter. Fox has shown out as one of the most clutch players in the NBA this season, and that trend continued in the win over the Warriors.

THE BAD

The defense, sometimes: The Kings have shown themselves to be a weird defensive team. Throughout many parts of the game, the Warriors got whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it, including massive runs to start the first and third quarters, as well as a spurt of scoring in the fourth. And yet, at other times, the Kings can shut down whoever they like, including Steph Curry for multiple possessions this evening. If the Kings ever figure out how to execute at their highest level defensively for the majority of a game, watch out.

THE Ugly

Nothing: We’re celebrating 6-6 basketball, baby!

The King of Kings

This award could go to either Domantas Sabonis or De’Aaron Fox, but I’m giving it to Sabonis tonight. If he hadn’t carried the team for the majority of the game, in scoring, on the boards, and as the catalyst of the offense, De’Aaron Fox wouldn’t have been in position to put the Warriors away. A hell of a game by the big man.

They didn’t cave in! They beat a team they could’ve and should’ve beaten!

Huerter shoots better from 3 than from the FT line LOL!

Overcame mistakes that cost them their last game against the Warriors(refs didn’t help of course). That’s how you build on becoming a winning team.

This one felt different. This win tingles… in a good way. I haven’t felt this way about the Kings in some time. Has my glass gone from half empty to half full?

The Kings (Bill Murray’s character) aren’t stuck in groundhog day anymore, so it seems.

The movie (season) isn’t over yet, but you can feel a turning point in the script.

I made a comment at The end of the game thread yesterday, that this is fun and feels different than the last few times when the kings started to play well. I do think that this team is a better team and just feels to have something more special about them

Captain Obvious says coach Brown deserves a ton of praise. No matter who comes in it sure looks like a cohesive group.

On the GSW broadcast Fitz reminded his listeners the Kings could have very easily won all three games.

Warriors lose Mike Brown. And now their record isn’t very good.

Coincidence or correlation?

Kings got a good coach (along with good player additions) and are playing inspired, fun basketball.

Xanadu!

Olivia Newton John, Gene Kelly….and the dude in the Warriors movie…plus music by ELO…some of Olivia’s best songs on the soundtrack. Cool animated sequence by Don Bluth. Shabba-Doo and other great dancers…

But not the best script or direction.

22 of 45, 49%. That was Sabonis’s % of Kings rebounds tonight.

This is from after the Portland game where I hoped the Kings could get to 6-6 by tonight.

Figure out a way to get a split this weekend (against the Clippers & the 1st Warriors game). Split again against Memphis and Miami. Win your 3 winnable games on the road. You’ll probably lose against GSW. Give yourself a chance against Cleveland and especially LA. Split those. Figure out a way to get the Dubs at home Nov 13th.

Be .500 (6-6) going into the TNT game against the Nets on Tuesday the 15th. After that you play San Antonio and Detroit to finish the homestand. Undefeated homestands are always fun.

@Memphis Nov 22nd. @Atlanta 23rd (rest advantage for Atl). @Boston 25th. Get 1 of those.

Home against the Suns on the 28th and the 30th against the Indiana Haliburton’s.

11-9 is probably the most realistic goal after 20 games given the schedule. Losing last night hurts, but it’s not the end of the world. It’s what you do with it. Be interested to see how the Kings respond here.

Some of that was wrong, of course, it usually is. That is quite often how punditry works. The point here was that despite the obvious problems this team has, it has obvious strengths too. The Kings are 25th in DRtg, but 6th in ORtg. Their Net Rtg has finally hit positive on the season at +0.1. The Kings are 3rd in offensive eFG%, 7th in offensive FT Rate (12th in defensive FT rate) 6th in DRB% among other things. Yes, it’s also true the Kings are 29th in defensive eFG%. It’s not all peaches and cream. It never is.

That said, this is why the Kings traded for Sabonis. If they had been able to run offense whatsoever during large parts of the 4th qtr (instead of throwing the ball way), Domas likely has a triple double. Other than the 26 & 22 part of his line, I was rather impressed at how often Domas gets guys open (like De’Aaron).

The demise of Harrison Barnes is exaggerated. He’s not putting up staggering lines, or anything, but he’s contributing things in subtle ways. The block HB had was huge, as was the layup with 90 seconds to go.

Keegan Murray hit a lot of shots tonight. He was a bit over aggressive at times, but shit, I have no real complaints with that given the alternative. Keegan can really shoot the ball from deep, it was great to see those b2b steals in the 2nd qtr (that was a big momentum swing for the Kings), and it was just nice to see production period. There are flaws there, but, jeez, the kid is 22. Chill. There’s some time to grow into the player he’s going to ultimately become.

We saw the good, bad and ugly from Malik Monk tonight. I’m going to pretend the latter two didn’t exist just for simplicity. He simply had moments where he took over the game in the 2nd when the Kings really needed him to.

I don’t understand why Kevin Huerter misses FT’s and is hitting 50% on 3’s. I don’t get it. Otherwise, fabulous game.

De’Aaron Fox didn’t have a perfect game, but the main blemish of his game was the 2 missed FTs. Numerous times he set up Keegan Murray for 3’s (like at the end of the 3rd qtr) and Fox finished with 8 assists tonight. The scoring mattered like the 11 points in the 4th qtr (shoulda been 13 but the lazy bastard missed his FT’s again), but really for me was the times he just changed the tone of the game throughout. The block on Curry was big, the 3 to put the Kings up was big, these are all new for Fox. It’s been fun to watch him evolve.

Mike Brown deserves a lot of credit for not letting Steph Curry drop another epic performance like he did the last go around. They kept blitzing Curry from the 2nd qtr on and it changed the game dramatically. The Warriors scored 39 points in the 1st qtr, they scored 76 points the rest of the game. That’s an adjustment.

Overall I’m rather impressed that this team has climbed the mountain after a tough start. Most likely, in part because the Nets are scuffling, they’ll come out with their hair on fire Tuesday night. I’m looking forward to seeing how the Kings go about taking care of business.

There were times the crowd could have been mistaken for a Chase Center crowd. Which made the win even better. Especially with the people sitting next to us acting like the Warriors had it in the bag when they took the lead in the 4th.

It’s bad parenting. Raise a Warriors fan, and your child complains when they get an XBox for Christmas because they only got 3 games along with it. Raise a Kings fan, and your child celebrates getting coal in their stocking because it’s proof that Santa knows they exist. That’s more pleasant AND much, much cheaper.

If the Kings won 5 championships in 10 years. I suspect no one would question the arrogance here. Dubs are done. But the run was historic. What I really give them props for is brilliant drafting. Most of the players on the Kings right now were all Free Agents or trades. Other Than Fox, Davion and Murray. Home grown teams get my respect all day.

What bothers me are some serious Kings fans friends/coworkers who now follow the Warriors and actually drive to games occasionally. I’ve heard, “I just like good basketball.”

Where I’m from, that’s just not done. You’d lose a finger.

Shouldn’t Steph have done his “Night, night” pose after Fox blocked his corner three?!

Watching the game from home, it sounded to me much more pro-Kings than recent Dubs visits.

There was a sequence between Monk and Sabonis that ended in a Barnes layup that reminded me of the Kings when Jwill came here. Creative basketball that’s fun for the players and fans alike. When we’re playing like this, we’re a dangerous team. And the West does seem to be wide open

I love Malik Monk.

And I can’t be the only one who laughed when he fell onto the court from out of bounds.

Dude just has crazy energy.

Love Monk too, but can’t forget about TD. He’s really been contributing lately in the minutes he’s getting. Love his toughness, and he seems to team up well with Metu in that second unit.

OMG I had the same thought and almost posted that on the game thread, but didn’t want to seem the idiot.

I’m ok with you being the idiot. 🙂

This is a gutty team. Playing hard every night and continuing to fight back runs. I haven’t seen the team play this hard since Ron Artest was in Sac. These next 3 are very winnable games: Nets, Spurs, Pistons. Could they drop one. Possibly. This is a season of Parity. Early on. Still 2-1 is realistic. This team should at least 2 games over .500 before starting a crazy stretch of games. Grizz, Hawks, Celtics, Clips, Suns, Pacers, Bucks, Cavs, Sixers, and Raptors. 10 0f 13 on the road. I don’t see this team having many blowouts. Overall, the team is still pretty bad defensively.

Contrary to belief.
The Kings have had an easy stretch after those first 4 games. The only good team they have played in the past 8 have been the Cavs. Every other team is under .500. Regardless, the Kings would have lost most of these games in the past. That’s marked improvement. They are now beating the teams they are supposed to beat. Now, the next level is to see how they compare with the Top 6 in each conference. That’s coming after this homestand.

The Kings will really be tested on the trip after this 3-game home stand. We will see if this team has the potential to be a real playoff team or play in potential.

In other news:

The Dubs are toast! It’s Curry, Wiggins and nothing else. Klay and Dray are done. If the Dubs had any sense, they should unload Poole, Wiseman, Kuminga, and Moody. They are a bad team and there is no denying it.

They just won a chip, give them time lol. If there’s one think I’ve learned it’s to never doubt the warriors. Even if they stink up the joint the rest of the season they will get their magic back next year

That wasn’t the tune you were singing beforehand.

Regardless, the Kings would have lost most of these games in the past. That’s marked improvement. They are now beating the teams they are supposed to beat.

Funny, the national storyline is how the other teams aren’t doing what they are doing. The national folks are still treating this like it’s an early season mirage (like Utah and Portland IMO). But YMMV.

Now, the next level is to see how they compare with the Top 6 in each conference. That’s coming after this homestand.

The Kings will really be tested on the trip after this 3-game home stand. We will see if this team has the potential to be a real playoff team or play in potential.

Wait a minute. I thought the Nets were a weight class above the Kings. That’s not so anymore? The Kings need to beat the Spurs and Pistons at home, though.

At worst the Kings should finish 3-1 this homestand, and really the only semi-acceptable loss would be the Nets tomorrow assuming the circumstances warrant it. I’m not even sure there are circumstances that warrant it. The Nets just got thoroughly outplayed by the Lakers (who aren’t as bad as 3-12; but they aren’t much better than a 500 team in all likelihood unless AD goes supernova on a lot of teams a lot of nights).

But first things first. Get through this homestand and win out. That would be the first 6 game win streak since…….the 2004-05 Kings and they won 7 that year in early November. Yes, Chris Webber was on the team at that time.

During the 16 yr streak, the Kings won 5 in the Musselman season. The Kings won 4 in the Tyreke Evans rookie season. 4 in 2010-11. 5 in a row during the ‘Malone got fired for Cousins meningitis’ season. 5 in a row during the full Karl season. 5 in a row in the last Joerger season. 5 in a row during the 20-21 season. 5 ‘5 game win streaks’ in 16 seasons. Two other occasions of 4 in a row. That’s how bad this team has been. So I get reticence.

But I really think this team should be aiming for taking a 7 game win streak into Memphis next Tuesday.

Yep. I knew the doom had to be in here somewhere. I finally found it! Eureka!

Agreed. Truly being a .500 team means beating other teams with a winning record every once in a while.

Time to see what this team really is.

To me, the thing that stands out the most this season is how resilient this team is. When another teams has even a short run, I am eager to see how they clap back. I feel like Sabonis and Fox had some sort of blood oath in preseason pledging that they will handle whatever shit happens at any point in the game.

Fox is obviously next level. Sweet baby Jesus, he can close a game. He is using every bit of his talents, for the first time in his career. What a waste the years of him being coached by Luke was. He is a killer.

When was the last time we had a player compete every freaking play like Sabonis does? My God. That man is an absolute bully. He is so present every moment he is on the court. What an amazing paring with Fox. I have followed him since he was a rookie and this is exactly the situation and player I have been hoping for.

So many shooters! Keegan, Huerter, Barnes, Monk, Davis, and Lyles? So many options to see who is on fire. Metu! His physicality and motor has found a place!

Brown was absolutely the right choice for this team. It has a personality. An identity, and there is so much room to grow!

I am all in on this team. 45 wins is realistic, as there is so much room for growth, from the team learning Brown’s systems, to youth in Davion and Keegan leveling to their potential.

Boom! This team is for real. Exactly what this fan base deserves, and you cannot underestimate how much the crowd and the fan’s enthusiasm affects this roster.

I recorded this and watched it late after the Niners game, and excuse me, but FUUUUUUUUCK. That was fun! Some useless thoughts I have…
-Curry is phenomenal but after 3 games in a couple weeks, I’m sick of the antics and falling down every time someone breathes near him.
-Klay and Draymond playing old. Just don’t look like the same guys anymore.
-Warriors have a massive drop off once the bench is in. Poole is overrated.

Enough about the Warriors.

-Huerter’s game is more than a sweet shot. Dude plays hard. I like it.
-Love the energy of Monk and TD off the bench.
-Metu still needs to shoot less threes. Rim run and play tough D!
-Sabonis with a grown man game. I’ve been sour on the trade but this Sabonis lately is a beast.
-Fox… what a stud. Affecting all parts of the game. I don’t care if he gets the All Star vote, he is one right now.
-Loved Keegan’s aggression even with some sloppy passes. He and Huerter can absolutely light it up from deep.

Great game. Go Kings.

Seems a legit possibility . Just wish the broadcast team would follow the game on the court instead of so many unrelated long stories . It was a great game to watch !

I think Draper and Katy are the two worst commentators in the league. I think Jones reads a dictionary at night and looks way too hard for times to drop words nobody has heard in the English language. But fuck it, we’re the Kings.

I wish the radio broadcast would sync perfectly with the video feed.

Gary Gerould won’t be around forever, so I think I might just deal with the delay.

Kosta, you can sync them up if you are using Direct TV and the Sirius XM channel, or the plain old radio over your phone. I do it, takes a little finagling but I really enjoy Gary’s broadcast. If your local to Sacto it’s probably tougher to do since you would be getting the local tv feed.

Gary apologized for being so angry over two offensive foul calls against Fox and Monk. In reality he was really mild. I let out five or six f bombs.

Haha, I drop those bombs as well!

Thanks for the helpful advice, HoustonJP. I don’t have Direct TV or Sirius XM, but I’ll try to figure this out. I’m outside of Sac, so I’ve been watching League Pass.

Thank you!

The warriors one was pretty bad last night imo. They were so biased towards the warriors. That play in the 4th where Monk was called for an offensive foul cause it looked like he came at the defenders face with the ball, but Monk and the kings were upset about the call and while the broadcast was showing multiple replays and multiple angles of Monk clearly being hit in the face leading him to do that motion, the warriors commentators were like”man I don’t know what the kings were upset about, that’s clearly an offensive foul!”. And every compliment of the kings was less of a compliment and more of a defense for the warriors. Reminds me of the times a healthy kings team would lose to a mediocre team missing their three best players and kayte or whomever would say how hard it is to win in this league and make excuses. That’s at least half the commentators in the league from what I’ve seen watching every broadcast

Bay Area sports journalists wouldn’t know what the real world looked like without their team appropriated goggles affixed firmly to their faces. They know absolutely nothing about objective journalism and display a level of entitlement that is completely toxic/ hilarious depending upon how long you’ve had to listen to it.

.500 or better is worthy of praise, especially for the Kings. These guys are the best group so far in the past 16 years, they can keep proving me wrong and exceeding my expectations. It’s early though haha let’s not get too crazy w expectations. Go Kings! #LIGHTTHEBEAM
