Where do the Kings stand after the opening days of free agency?

After a few days of excitement, things are slowing down across the league.

Over the last couple of weeks, Kings General Manager Monte McNair has made some major moves to reshape a non-competitive roster into one that’s starting to offer some hope to Kings fans. Gone are Donte DiVincenzo, Damian Jones, Justin Holiday, and Maurice Harkless and here to stay are rookies Keegan Murray and Keon Ellis, as well as young veterans Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter. There’s been no doubt that the Kings have been aggressive this offseason, both in their expenditure of assets and in their acquisition of talent, but free agency isn’t over until Andre Iguodala signs a highly-paid contract with a random contender, meaning Sacramento still has some time to improve their playoff-hopeful team on the fringes. Here’s where they stand after the first few days of the 2022 offseason.

Spending Tools

With one big signing and one big trade under their belt, the Kings still have a few salary cap exceptions at their disposal to improve the roster, with the first being the remainder of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. After spending the majority of the MLE on Malik Monk’s two-year deal, Monte McNair left himself around $1.5 million (the exact amount will depend on the final terms of Monk’s contract) to use. The advantage to leaving a small slice available is that the MLE allows teams to offer contracts of up to four years, while several other exceptions are limited to two. However, that spending money is likely accounted for, as that amount of cash is a reasonable offer for Sasha Vezenkov, who the Kings are expected to meet with and eventually sign in Las Vegas later this month.

If the rest of the MLE is, in fact, accounted for, the other significant spending tool left for Sacramento is the bi-annual exception, which is worth around 2 years, $8.3 million. As is indicated by the name, the BAE can only be used every other year, so the Kings may or may not use the exception, depending on if they want to reserve it for next season, and using the BAE also hard caps a team, although that shouldn’t really affect what Sacramento plans to do this season. Higher level players who deserve more than that veteran minimum can often be lured to the negotiating table with the bi-annual exception in hand.

A lesser thought-of tool that the Kings may also utilize, and one that expires around the trade deadline, is their $4 million trade exception that was generated from the Tyrese Haliburton transaction. TPEs allow teams to take on extra salary in a trade, but they cannot be combined with any other exceptions, including other TPEs. If the Kings engaged in trade conversations with another team, and the other team wanted to send a player with a salary of $4 million or less, Sacramento could absorb that player without needing cap space or outgoing matching salary. Trade exceptions of such a low amount aren’t commonly used, but occasionally a team can net a lower rotational player in a multi-team deal if other parties need to dump salary elsewhere.

The final area opportunity in free agency for Sacramento is one that is available to every team: the veteran minimum contract. Minimum deals can run for up to two years and are paid according to how many years a players has been in the league, usually running around $2 million per season. Interestingly enough, the NBA also partially reimburses teams for some minimum deals, depending on years of service of the players, length of contract, and a couple of other factors. The Kings won’t find any game-changers for the minimum, but veteran depth pieces and injury insurance can be secured with those types of deals.

Roster Spots

After their two-for-one swap in the Kevin Huerter trade, the Kings still have a few roster spots they need to fill. With the assumption that Sasha Vezenkov is coming over this season, Sacramento should stand at 13 filled roster spots after Vezenkov is locked down. That will leave two open slots, one of which needs to be filled prior to the season, as teams are required to carry a minimum of 14 players throughout the season. With preseason months away, there’s no massive rush for Monte McNair to find his 14th, and perhaps 15th, guy, but that will need to be taken care of before the 2022 campaign begins.

The Kings have also already filled both of their two-way spots. Last year’s second round pick Neemias Queta will enter another two-way deal with the Kings, while undrafted rookie Keon Ellis will take the other.

Needs

Although Monte McNair has done an admirable job of filling out the roster with real NBA talent, there are still a couple of gaps in the rotation that need to be filled with the remaining available roster spots. The first is that of a reliable backup wing. Kevin Huerter can fill in at small forward for a few minutes here and there, but targeting someone to fill in for Harrison Barnes and Keegan Murray, both of whom look more like power forwards than threes, should be at the top of the front office’s priority list. If either Barnes or Murray goes down due to injury or even a single game of foul trouble, Sacramento is going to be forced to play a ton of three-guard lineups, not the worst idea in the world, but also not what a coach wants to be forced to do due to roster constraints. Justin Holiday and Maurice Harkless were the Kings most viable backup small forward options, and with both of them gone in the Huerter trade, Monte should be looking for a replacement as quickly as possible. The pickings are quite slim at this time of free agency, but Yuta Watanabe (unrestricted), Kessler Edwards (unrestricted), and Caleb Martin (restricted) are probably the best options remaining on the board.

The other glaring need is that of a tertiary ball-handler. It’s expected that De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell will receive the bulk of the minutes at point guard, but securing a veteran third-string point guard is an important depth move for the front office. Over the last three years, De’Aaron Fox has missed a total of 56 games, or an average of 19 per season. If he were to miss a similar chunk of games next year, Davion Mitchell would need a reliable, real-NBA backup, and vice versa if Mitchell were to miss an extended amount of time as well. Any team hoping to reach the playoffs such as the Kings can’t waste games and minutes on unready G Leaguers and random guys pulled off the street, as they tried with Ade Murkey, Justin Robinson, and Emmanuel Mudiay last season, meaning another point guard should be sought. There are quite a few veterans out there who would likely be available for the minimum, with names like Facundo Campazzo (unrestricted), Elfrid Payton (unrestricted), and Chris Chiozza (unrestricted) all waiting for a call.

As free agency begins to tail off and as the depth of an already shallow class continues to decrease, Sacramento’s front office still has the opportunity to snag some quality depth pieces for low prices if they maintain the aggression they showed at the start of free agency.

Tyreke would be pretty awesome for the kings actually. He could play the 1,2and 3. Am I wrong in thinking that he’s actually a perfect match? Especially if you consider his history in sacramento. Coming back to help fill 3 gaps at making the playoffs for the first time (since he was drafted) in 16 years. I love the idea honestly. That said, I’m drunk at the moment.

Tyreke Evans is 32 years old, was suspended for 2years for drug offense. Not PED’s or weed but something along the lines of cocaine, heroine, etc. it’s funny how people want to welcome him back. It’s a hard pass. But please continue to bash players or former coaches for unsubstantiated claims.

Guess nobody deserves a second chance. Got it. I don’t know what he did, and I’m guessing neither do you. But if he didn’t hurt anyone but himself and now he got better, I’d give him a shot.

Not in this case. He was suspended indefinitely due to opioid use. Though which opioid was not specified, they include cocaine, heroine, meth, and fenatyl. Tyreke has already had two chances here and I believe the Kings are trying to build a positive culture. Do your research, full stop.

Sanctimonious bs. He was obviously not suspended indefinitely because he was reinstated into the league. He served his suspension, was reinstated, and is now fully eligible to play in the NBA. There’s nothing inherently immoral about substance abuse, unlike sexual assault which it seems like you’re making a comparison too. There are plenty basketball reasons to argue against signing him, but being a negative effect on the team culture for drug use three years ago is a bit of a stretch. The vast majority of players consume alcohol, cannabis, and likely other substances. It’s not a team full of middle schoolers.

Some very positive moves, primarily at the cost of some players that wouldn’t have factored into any success, and a first-round selection over the next several years that will never be in the top ten.

Murray and Ellis looking like NBA players in Vegas, and as you pointed out, some decent options available for backup wing and point minutes.

I’d guess that most of the answer to this question has to do with whether Holmes is around, but until then, do you think that Queta should spend considerable time with the parent club, and if so, how many minutes would you like him to get?

I think Holmes will be a consolation prize of sorts after the KD/Kyrie and Ayton situations get figured out. Len and Queta can handle the minutes Holmes would have played. Holmes for a bigger wing would definitely balance out the roster.

Do think if/when Ayton moves, Holmes to PHX is worth speculation. Could the Kings construct something around Crowder? As your point suggests I assume thats predicated a bit on KD being a Sun or not.

I mean thats a plus add, maybe fair value since he’s expiring. But he’s more a 4 than 3 which then isn’t really solving the SF dilemma. Kings enter possible issues/ slash drop off with Barnes and Crowder hitting FA prior to Domas come 24.

Obrue is 26 and stands at 6′ 7″. His stats are 15 pts. 4 rebs. 34.5% 3’s and is a hustler and real good defender. His salary is 12mil. over next two years which would work for a trade with Holmes.

What about this

Kings get
Doug McDermott (2 years 13.7M)
(Possibly 2026 less favorable Indi or Miami (from Spurs)

Suns get
Richaun Holmes (3 years 11.2M)
And 2023 Indi 2nd (from us)

Spurs get
Landry Shamet (4 years 9.5M)
2023 1st Suns

Kings get assuring/nice fit backup 3 that spans Sabonis’s tenure/decision in 24.

Suns get center replacement post Ayton, in exchange of getting off Shamet’s deal with trading back from a low 1st to high 2nd.

Spurs get first in exchange for taking on Shamet (whose playable but not in longterm plans)

Not a bad idea.
Rounding out the roster with Elfrid Payton and McBuckets would create some nice depth.
The flip side is, I wouldn’t mind holding on to Holmes to see if he can increase his value. Plus he’s really the only quality big besides Sabonis.

Agree to disagree on that one rockbottom, but regardless the question is for 3 depth on this team. Not seeing a lot of other plus back up options considering the high demand despite/scarcity problem at the position leaguewide.

The kings have done well to address outside shooting: Huerter, Monk, Murray, and Vezenkov (assuming he comes) should all help. As noted they do need another wing and point guard insurance. A rim protector would be nice.

A suggestion: with four apparently strong guards, I would hope that by seasons end they all would have averaged twenty minutes +. That would allow for more energy devoted to defensive effort and help minimize injuries over a long season.

I’m less sure how front court minutes and usage might work.

Unless there’s a really good wing defender still available, it’s fine to start the season with Barnes, Murray, and Vezenkov as your “wings”. Another ballhandler is a real need. Payton would be a good get.

Just from everything I’ve seen I think he’ll be a fantastic fit offensively. Great with catch and shoot threes, especially from the corners. Good at attacking closeouts, good cutter. The big question is the defense, which I think will be the theme for the year. I think this team will be one of the best offensive teams in the league but will they be able to stop anyone?

So if he can have a Mirotic-like NBA career, that’s great. Odds are he is more a Tavares, Larkin end of rotation type.

There is more to say on all the moves thus far, but I think thats more worthwhile when its the roster is finalized.

I think the biggest potential for a significant addition is via trade. Where Monte is with Barnes and Holmes, let alone the market.

I too share some questions at three as well as initiators off the bench. Another note frankly is at the rim finishing. Monte shrewdly cleared the lane for Domas and Fox, but otherwise 2 pt conversion leaves me a little concerned. Let alone some wings comfortable putting the ball on the deck without Fox on the floor.

A name I think worth pondering is McDermott, Spurs reset, draft, Vassell and Johnson I could see them wanting to clear minutes at the forward spots. Not Sure if Holmes would be interesting to them ( doubt it, maybe 3 team deal, or if Poeltl moves), with some 2nd’s attached. Caveats aside I think he would be a decent add. Fits the egalitarian roster design, but also capable of some ball handling with a willingness to go to the rim. Along with spacing of course.

In terms of moving Barnes I am curious peoples ideas and or thoughts? One hand you have an assuring thing. But if there are questions of retention, the importance of next year out rules that assurance if deals exist I would assume. ANd offseason returns are often better then in-season ones.

Does Barnes for Kuzma+Avdija make the Kings better? I don’t actually know. Something about Kuzma has always bugged. Maybe it was the bleached hair, or the bone head plays that I have seen for a few years.

The Kings would get younger and have some upside with Avdija.

Kuzma is a scorer and rebounder but Barnes is a better defender. Kuzma is much younger and has expressed a desire to play defense. You also have a young forward in Avdija who shows a lot of promise.

Just my opinion – Harrison Barnes is more than a solid NBA level starter talent. He is the Jack of All trades, master of none, but that is the worst thing you can say about him, IMO.

He is high character both on and off the court. This too, is a skill and one that I believe is needed on this team. Having a Champ ring is a plus as well. Who is the locker room veteran presence that so many teams cherish? He is not Iggy or Udonis but he is valuable for this team with more than just his on court skills. He can be a wonderful mentor for Keegan Murray. His tie-in with Coach Brown should also be a plus.

I get that some want an upgrade, particularly as he is on the last year of his deal which makes him an UFA – but I would bet HB is top 20 at his position. His upgrade is in the form of first round, #4 pick Keegan Murray, the Hawk. Black Falcon tutoring The Hawk is a positive.

Unfortunately I agree. I think broadly speaking if the Kings don’t want a drop off from Barnes they are likely trading him for a similar player on a bad contract as the difference. With Holmes maybe factored considering the potential of him as matching salary.

The right deal, considering the two year timeline could make sense but for who is what’s tricky. Especially if they are predominantly a 3

I don’t know, depends on the wants and needs of the specific teams involved.

If HB has indicated to MM that he doesn’t plan to resign here or plans to test the market, then MM should be looking to trade him. However, this can also be done at the trade deadline when the FO will have a clearer picture of whether the playoffs are realistic.

DJ Augustin still available?

The only thing I am bothered with about him is that he goes by DJ but his name is Darryl Gerard and I find that confusing.

I’d bet good money that his father’s name is Darryl Gerard Augustin, and that the player is Darryl Junior.

Eric Paschall? He’s more of a power forward, but can hit the three and hustles.

Hey maybe we can get Miles Bridges for cheap. In spite of the fact that he went OJ on his wife in front of their young children, nearly crushing her throat, breaking her nose, contusions all over her body….
Kind of weird how the NBA has buried this story. Chargers with felony spousal abuse and the police have the photos and the kids to back it up. NBA today had a brief statement basically restating the charges from the press release. But, they will keep us informed of any updates. Also, apparently not the first time. Maybe you shouldn’t try to kill your wife in front of your kids two days before free agency. But, some team will probably want to pay him 200 plus mil over five years. SMFH

I haven’t read any reports about Bridges decapitating his wife and another person, but it could have gotten lost among the dozen mass-shootings over the weekend.

I think a smart team is going to sign Kessler Edwards. Could that team be the Kings? I don’t know but that’s who I’d snag.

Someone that can be a wing and handle the ball you say? The John Salmons memorial.
