Kings 112, Bulls 103: Fox and the Ox lead the way

The Kings blew another huge lead but held on against the Chicago Bulls.
By | 58 Comments | Mar 14, 2022

Credit: Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Over the last few days, the Sacramento Kings have blown huge leads against both the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks, resulting in two of the worst losses of the season, and although the Kings didn’t exactly handle their 20-point halftime lead responsibly against the Chicago Bulls on Monday evening, they escaped against one of the best teams in the NBA behind another monster performance by De’Aaron Fox.

Over the last 16 years, the Sacramento Kings have rarely locked down a good team on the defensive end of the floor, but that was exactly what took place in the first half of Monday night’s contest. DeMar DeRozan was held scoreless in the first quarter, and while Nikola Vucevic put up 11 points over the first couple of periods, he did so on 11 field goal attempts, as he was bumped and wrestled by Domantas Sabonis and Sacramento’s big man crew all evening. In several instances in the first half, the Bulls ripped off mini-runs that would normally cause a Sacramento collapse, but the Kings responded with buckets of their own each time. De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis were especially effective, as the pair combined for 30 points, 9 boards, and 8 assists through the first 24 minutes. Davion Mitchell also enjoyed one of his most versatile scoring halves of the season, putting up 12 points on a variety of jumpers, drives, and three-point shots.

Of course, the Kings had to participate in the third quarter, as is unfairly mandated in the collective bargaining agreement, and the quarter went about as suspected. The Bulls ran out to a 27-17 start and Chicago paced the Kings from there, splitting Sacramento’s lead in half by the end of the third. Thankfully, the Kings were able to muddle their way through the fourth and hang onto the lead, with De’Aaron Fox leading the way as a scorer, while Donte DiVincenzo made all of the little plays that make a huge difference throughout a 48 minute contest. Fox led the Kings with another monster effort, putting up 34 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 27 points and 6 assists.

Quick Stats

Sacramento Kings: 112 points, 48% FG, 40% 3P, 45 rebounds, 25 assists, 10 steals, 3 blocks, 15 turnovers

Chicago Bulls: 103 points, 41% FG%, 29% 3P, 40 rebounds, 22 assists, 5 steals, 5 blocks, 13 turnovers

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
THE GOOD

De’Aaron Fox, man among boys: Over the last 15-ish games, De’Aaron Fox has been out of control in all of the right ways. He’s dominating the open court, knocking down mid-range jumpers, and his three-point shot continues to wreck teams when they close off the paint and try to prevent his drives. Tonight was another huge performance on insane efficiency, as he put up 34 points on 52% from the field, 38% from deep, and 83% from the free throw line. There have been legitimate questions surrounding his place as this franchise’s cornerstone, but if he can play near this level for an entire season, those questions may very well disappear.

Davion Mitchell, two-way player: No one can question Davion Mitchell’s defensive prowess, as it was on display against multiple top Bulls scorers tonight, but his offensive game has severely lagged in his rookie season, as he’s been one of the least efficient shooters in the NBA this year. That wasn’t the case tonight. Mitchell put up 16 points while hitting half of his field goals and three-point attempts, and more importantly, he was scoring in a variety of ways. The Kings don’t have much scoring off of their bench these days, and Mitchell discovering his touch would be huge for Sacramento’s depth.

THE BAD

Third quarter shenanigans: The Kings cannot play in the third quarter. No matter the coach, the players, the personnel, or The Pope, the Kings cannot play in the third quarter. One more time: the Kings cannot play in the third quarter.

THE UGLY

Richaun Holmes: At this point, it’s hard not to feel bad for Richaun Holmes. Between multiple eye injuries, dealing with a face mask, personal tragedy, and a huge reduction in importance and role on the team, Holmes just doesn’t look like he’s going to be the same guy for Sacramento. Tonight, he put up 0 points, 1 rebound, and 3 fouls in just over 10 minutes of play. Everyone in Sacramento is rooting for such a fan favorite to find his rhythm, but that seems unlikely to happen in a Kings uniform.

The King of Kings

De’Aaron Fox has been nothing short of incredible since the Domantas Sabonis trade. He’s 10th in the league in scoring at 29.4 points per game, and his offensive versatility has opposing teams scrambling and tripping over themselves to try and slow a budding star down.

Great to get very productive play from Donte, Davion and Lyles ! They performed above expectations and it’s very encouraging ! No need to play Holiday the rest of the season !

The Kings had good balanced scoring last night. Fox with 30+, Sabonis with 20+, Donte and Davion with 15+, Metu with 10.

All in all, the Kings had 5 players who put up double digit scoring, and almost 6 players with Lyles, who put up 9. It’s a nice formula for success, if this can continue.

And yes, I agree, we all need a long holiday from Holiday.

I don’t care about wins at this point but that was fun to watch, especially given how much every good player on the Bulls deeply annoys me.

Did this change anything about the season? Nope, not really. Was the game fun for a team that has mostly played badly the last several weeks? Yes.

Since the trade De’Aaron Fox has picked it up offensively. In 14 games since he’s been paired with Domas, he’s averaging 29.5 points, 6.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 2.4 turnovers and has a 51.5/37.5./75 FG/3FG/FT line.

On February 7th, De’Aaron’s ORtg was 110.6 and his DRtg was 115.6 with a 53.2 TS%. In the 15th games since, that’s a 116.1 ORtg and a 118.4 DRtg with a 59.5 TS%.

What does any of this mean exactly? Eh, whatever you want it to I guess. But the Kings needed to know if the pairing between De’Aaron and Domas could work, and I think it’s pretty clear that De’Aaron can score at all 3 levels really over a decent sample size. The only question left is whether or not that’s the trend or is just a hot streak that has dissipated as it so often has in previous seasons.

Many other good things tonight: DiVicenzo’s best game as a King, Harkless had a positive contribution in his small minutes, I liked Metu’s contributions on both ends until he let the no foul call get in his head in the 3rd qtr, Barnes just absolutely locked down DeRozan for very long stretches, Davion Mitchell had his best offensive game since the trade, and Trey Lyles led the team in rebounding.

Domantas Sabonis is another story, but in the end he makes an impact even if his numbers don’t quite tell the story. Domas had 22 points, 10 from the line including some big makes in the 4th qtr, but I thought his last rebound and the pass to De’Aaron (who went backdoor) were among the 3 or 4 biggest players that won the Kings the game. DiVicenzo’s energy in grabbing loose balls and rebounds was another big factor, as was De’Aaron Fox organizing and getting the offense moving (not always as well as anyone would want). A true team win for a team that hasn’t had anywhere near as many of those.

Like I said, I thought it was fun.

Last time I went to a game was when Yogi Ferrell was still suiting up for the Kings. So it’s been awhile.

But I’m not itching to go back because of the vax requirements.

I imagine the Kings will be dropping all requirements at some point in the very new future. The mask requirement was never taken seriously.

Nice win, but the pessimistic Kings fan in me can’t help question whether this is where we start the run where we fall several lottery slots, end up with the 10th pick, but still fail to make the play-in. Then we get to hear all summer how this is playoff team because they went 8-4 or something to end the season.

You’re not being pessimistic you’re being pragmatic. Falling from 6th to 10th in the draft order would be negatively significant.

Right. It’s an absurd system that incentivizes losing no matter how much they tweak it. I would much prefer a system that was not record-based whatsoever, but that will never happen. In the meantime, I want that top 3 pick (i.e. superstar) so badly that I can’t help but bother and root for losses even though it pains me to do so. Of course we already got a top-2 pick not long ago, but let’s not talk about that.

The maddening thing is that we seem to be the only team that refuses to recognize the reality of this absurd system and that in today’s NBA you almost always need to bottom out and accumulate high draft capital first before becoming great. Which is why teams like the Grizz have already lapped us twice in the interim. And it’s possible OKC and Hou will make the playoffs before we do.

The win doesn’t bother me. It not like the Kings have won 4 of their last 6 to really hurt their draft position. Last night was an isolated W. They will probably lose the next 3 or 4 games. Did anyone expect a season-ending 15 game losing streak? I certainly did not. The Kings are playing more competitive ball as of late but this team is still trash. A nice win vs Bulls won’t propel the Kings to go on a magical winning spree.

Bad for the tank, but man, what a fun and good (?!) game by the Kings. Defense was good, saw some spectacular offensive plays, but most of all: the Kings outworked and outfought the Bulls.

Metu has been playing well. He has always shown flashes, but I think it’s more than just flashes now. Looking at him more seriously now as a solid rotational 4. And Trey Lyles has continued to contribute after that one good game. Looking at him also.

The Kings must play Mitchell and DD at least 30 minutes a game the rest of the season. There’s absolutely no reason not to do so. I also want Metu and Queta getting playing time. There’s no reason at this point to play Harkless, Lyles, Holiday, Lamb.

Yes, but in the post Daydreamer was replying to you state there’s “no reason at this point to play…Lyles…”, which I don’t agree with, either. Get Lyles (and Lamb, to an extent) some burn and see what they bring to various rotations while you have the chance. The rest of the season is basically scrimmages and spoilers, why the hell not…

They have a team option for him at $2.6M, which is about as cheap as you can get anyone for. He’d likely cost the Kings more than that if he were a UFA.

Whats crazy is the FPW’s out and article earlier this season and mentioned Lyles as a piece Kings should kick the tires on and there was a bunch of negative comments. He’s definitely been everything they said he can be, rotational 4 that can help stretch the floor. He’s one piece I’ve been surprised with and would like to keep around to come off the bench.

This has nothing to do with the useless win but Jalen Duren would be my choice if the Kings keep their pick. He can protect the rim and is a good rebounder. He can play the 4 and I believe would fit next to Sabonis, even at his very young age. Of course because they didn’t “actively” tank, the Kings will need serious lottery luck to snag him. I think people put way too much emphasis on a player scoring a ton of points. As we’ve seen with Fox, if you don’t play defense, it doesn’t matter. And ya they played good defense last night, woohoo one game. That’s uh great. I still prefer using the pick as an asset at this time due to the extremely small window Monte has created for success.

That’s not bad but we are likely to do better than that with our first pick, then we should target Christian Koloko. He not as good offensively yet as Duren who’s also not great offensively but Koloko is a premier defender. Duren likely to go somewhere in between Murray and Koloko.

Can’t argue with that. We will have to see how we do with lottery luck regarding our first pick. Finishing in 6th place, we may pick 6th or it could be worse, could also be better as well though I’ve learned to be a pessimist as a Kings fan.

The Plan

One – Tank the rest of the season and make sure we lose the Indiana game.

Two – Draft Keegan Murray unless Jabari Smith is available

Three – Draft Christian Koloko. He’s projected late first early second and make sure he doesn’t get away from us. Give up our second round picks if necessary. He is the Pac-12 defensive player of the year and most improved player, Koloko is on pace to become the best shot-blocker in Arizona history in the next few games. His 7-foot-4 wingspan, outstanding mobility and quickness getting off his feet make him a force both around the rim as well as covering ground on the perimeter, where he’s often asked to guard smaller players in Arizona’s big lineups.

Four – Do not over spend for tier two free agents. We’ve tried that many times (Hill, Ariza, Zzzbo, Cojo, Dedmon, etc.) it doesn’t work. Instead make a pitch for someone like Zach LaVine likely not available but who knows, Chicago already has $100 million committed next year without LaVine. Do they want to add a LaVine max contract to that. If you can’t get someone like that hold your powder. Do not overspend for Portis and Monk as Jerry Reynolds suggested. You’ll end up in indefinite purgatory at best with those guys.

Five – DD for 6-8 million okay. Lyles for $3 million okay. Jones 2-3 million okay

Six – Dump these salaries, Holiday, Harkless, Holmes, Len

Seven – Get Timme as a UFA or late second.

Someone said this roster couldn’t play defense. They obviously haven’t done their research on Murray and especially Christian Koloko the former Oakland Soldier.

Fox, Mitchell
LaVine, TD, Maybe DD – Likely have to ride with TD, Mitchell and maybe DD for now.
Barnes, Murray
Sabaonis, Murray, Timme
Koloko, Jones, Queta

Don’t believe Lavine is a horrible defender, he’s okay. Mitchell, DD, and TD are average to good defenders. Sabonis is a good team defender but not great on ball.

Murray should be a good defender in time and Koloko can/will be an elite defender. Down the road, if we have Mitchell, Murray and Koloko on the court at the same time, that potentially can provide a formidable NBA defense.

I like your optimism, but the Kings just don’t have the cap space or gravity to go after a player anywhere near LaVine in free agency. Sacramento being a free agency wasteland aside, they are sitting around a guarantee $105M in contracts with a cap scheduled to be around $121M. They also doesn’t take into account the guaranteed rookie scale of a pick around #6 (which is probably something like $6M). Then you have to figure at least one of their 3 second round picks gets a guaranteed deal. That would leave likely less than $10M in available cap space, plus their full MLE.

From all that, there are no Zach LaVine type players walking through that door. Hell, they aren’t even getting a Portis or Monk with that available cap space.

Lastly, why do you like another paint playing center with their first second round pick? I know little of Koloko, but he reads like a Queta 2.0. I feel like the last thing the Kings need is a traditional 5 with Sabonis, Holmes, Len and Queta all on guaranteed deals next season.

You’ve made some good points. Do you remember at one time the warriors were a free agency waistland as you put it. My major point is that we can’t again overpay for these second tier free agents who won’t significantly improve the team and exhaust our cap space.

As for Koloko, watch Arizona and formulate your own opinion but he’s much more athletic than Queta who I’d like to see get some playing time. Koloko’s offensive game is still developing which is why he’s not projected high in the first round although things can change between now and the draft. He’s exceptional underneath as a rim protector, but what I’m most impressed with is how he depends on the perimeter for a big. That is a highly desired skill in the NBA. I do have to say his senior year in high school our Aau team played against him in Pittsburg ca. His team also had Scottie Pipens son and Kenyon Martins son who were both at the game not coaching just watching their sons play. It was Koloko who caught our eye. He was long, athletic, very quick but raw with his basketball skills. He’s improving and developing rapidly and I think for a late first or early second he would be a coo.

Lastly I think you’re a little off on your cap numbers and I do realize LaVine is a very long shot. My point again, I’d rather stay put than overspend like we’ve done soooo many times for second tier free agents. I fear a large overpay for a Portis or Monk as Jerry suggested. So go for the impact free agent like LaVine or save your cap space. Near trade deadlines when you have cap space you can take on a bad contract in exchange for some draft capital. Also, be patient watch where someone like Harden shakes out and then possibly harvest something from that team who has to dump salaries to bring in a Harden type player.

Here is where I got the salary cap numbers. Seems pretty accurate to me. Lamb, Jackson, and Jones are the only true exprings. That all being said, they also have cap holds that also hinder free agency.

You don’t pick nicknames for a player based on a kindergarten-level rhyme scheme with another teammate.
Otherwise a good write up.
Didn’t think we were going to finish that one with a W.
Lyles had gave some good effort, Metu also. Bones kinda disappeared for a bit but the guy knows how to execute, he doesn’t give up on plays and I like that.
Fox needs to start the year the way he plays at the end and we might actually see the post season again.
DDV, Davion, and the role players did a solid job, defense was dialed up for most of the game (3rd qtrs are kryptonite, wtf?)
Now stop it. We’re trying to tank dammit…

Knock knock.

Who’s there?

Cover.

Cover who?

Cover anyone, god dammit. No wonder this defense sucks!

What if he just has a different TKH member on each day as a co-host?

This, I can say with certainty, is a ticket to utter ruin.

Great win for a team going to the playoffs! Terrible with for THIS team which is fighting the tank for some reason.

Side note, I hate rooting for a team to be successful while also collecting Losses.

Rewatching the game, sequence of the game goes as follows (IMO). Kings are up 90-89 at the time.

7:59 to go: DiVicenzo forays into the lane but doesn’t get the foul from Tristan Thompson.
7:46: Fox nearly steals the ball but Chicago gets the ball back
7:41 Coby White misses a 3
7:34 Trey Lyles gets a foul call on Coby White but it’s a non shooting foul
7:28 Fox gets a layup putting the Kings up 92-89

Jones then misses a 3 for Chicago, Lyles gets a FT and puts the Kings up 93-89 with 6:54 to go.

The Bulls never got as close as 1 point ever again.

The thing I liked most about this game is yes, the Kings did blow their 20-point lead, but that didn’t lead to a collapse. They just built another lead. That’s what good teams do, and I hope it bodes well for next year.
