After an emotionally-draining snatching of victory from the jaws of defeat Wednesday night in Phoenix, the Kings are on the second leg of their four game road trip tonight, facing off against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans are a squad that seem intent on giving up early ground to other play-in hopefuls, and will be without their all-world big man, Zion Williamson.
The Pelicans… aren’t… great… right now and thus this is going to be our first TRAP GAAAME of the season.
Let’s talk Kings basketball!
When: Friday, October 29th, 5:00 PM PST
Where: Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, LA
TV: NBCSCA – Kyle Draper (play-by-play)
Radio: KHTK Sports 1140 AM
For Your Consideration
No Moral Victories: So as everyone and their mother has probably told you by now, tonight is the Kings first opportunity of the season to play the favorites in an NBA contest. The Pels have one win on the season, beating a resurgent Timberwolves squad two nights after the Wolves nipped them, and have generally not looked in sync without the engine of their team who is somewhere either recovering from a mysterious foot surgery or pulling off the ultra-silent version of Ben Simmon’s antics. It’s definitely the former, but in this league today, the latter can’t be dismissed – especially with Williamson and this New Orleans front office.
So moving on to those who will actually be playing tonight: They down bad, man. Brandon Ingram is playing well – with 25.6 points per game and shooting 46% from deep on over 5 attempts per game. Devonte Graham has been great early with 18.4 points and 5.2 assists. A man whose name I’ll refuse to mention but broke a Kings player’s right wrist last season is averaging 17 points and 15 rebounds early on. These things sound like the makings of a decent squad, like a team that could (and most seasons would) sneak up on a healthy Kings team. But outside of those three there is very little to see. Starting shooting guard, Nickeil Alexander-Walker couldn’t hit twine if he paid his very large teammate to throw his ass through every aisle of a Tractor Supply Co. store, hitting under 28% from the floor and less than 14% from deep in his three most recent games. This isn’t a matter of him being shy either – the kid takes a hair under 16 shots a game! Pulling out into the macro, the team itself is the fifth worst shooting team in the entire league. Sure, they’re top 10 in three point percentage at 35.1% but they’re only 22nd in attempts. They draw the least amount of fouls in the league, attempt the fourth least amount of free throws and cough up the ball over 18 times a game (second worst in the league there). Rookie head coach Willie Green’s team scores the second least amount of points in the NBA, play dead average NBA defense and run their game at the 10th slowest pace in the league. Is it fair that he’s missing one of the more promising young players in the NBA? No. But them’s the breaks. If the Kings play even three quarters of decent basketball, they might just beat those breaks off this New Orleans squad.
On the Kings side of things: they cannot keep relying on Harrison Barnes the MVP candidate. They just can’t. Fox can coast for another game but at some point soon they’ll have to stop surprising teams and just start beating them. Haliburton, too. He’s been incredibly uncomfortable at times on the floor and the Kings won’t survive if their backcourt of the future doesn’t start playing in the present. Buddy’s been exactly what the Kings have needed him to be off the bench and if you don’t think he won’t want to try to keep that run of good shooting up against the team that traded him his rookie season – I have a talented #2 pick to sell you for real cheap. The Pelicans can be the team that catalyzes the chemistry of this Kings squad, where they get the reps necessary to make it all click before a surprisingly successful season, or they can smack the shit out of Sacramento and throw further turmoil and confusion onto the team and the fanbase. Judging by past expectations, I’m not all that excited to find out which is which tonight.
Prediction
Kings dust the Smoothie King Center floor with the feathers of that godforsaken bird mascot they summon. Kings start clicking, wins start piling up, I go on a local radio show and apologize for ever doubting this obvious team of titans and they bar me from ever returning with my stupid realistic expectations. My radio tears go viral leading to gold jerseys being banned from the league. Jerry Reynolds calls to tell me I “really goofed up” and I’m exiled from the fandom and must watch Alexsej Pokusevski average 4 points off the bench for a G-League team in Tulsa.
Overall, a pretty good day for Kings fans!
Kings: 115, Pelicans: 103
Without Zion, their three-hundred pounder,
The Pels have tended to flounder.
This is one we could get,
But I still wouldn’t bet
Till our overall play proves sounder!
Well done Jman.
I love these Jman. Let me give one a go (I have no idea what I’m doing).
Without fouls called, we won’t get in the bonus,
On 3 pointers, we will have to put the onus.
I hope this is the game that Metu gets run,
Because it would be so fucking fun,
To see him punch that douche named Jonas.
Nice!
So is this your new thing in place of “Kings…next?” 😉
Pretty much. I figured anything that was not in any way Grant-related was a step up.
Can TDGL get up as many misses as minutes tonight? I can’t wait to find out
J/K. easy win tonight, blow out baby
Came here to post this. Nicely done.
Well, Kings being favored against a team missing their top talent?
Don’t slack on that defense…

TKH to Luke Walton if the Kings lose:
We can always reminisce about the last time we were in the playoffs –
Or the last time the Kings were actually the best team in the NBA and title contenders.

only the truly insane are allowed in
Should I update this?
(The amazeballian crazy part is that Luke forking Walton actually still is the head coach of the Sacramento Kings coming up on two years after I wrote this!)
And the roster is largely the same.
Thank you for re-posting your verbal diarrhea.
And I thought Kings Guru had diarrhea of the mouth. This is some next left poop!
Obviously joking 1951, I honestly appreciate and enjoy your commentary. I probably should not have started the day with Glenlivet.
Oh, we are all good. My gifs are meant to be humorous too!
I don’t actually cry on the outside, just on the inside! 😉
I get my fill of belly laughs almost daily by following TKH and formerly STR. I love the back and forth between contributors and commentators. I hope my sarcastic sense of humor doesn’t cause any hard feelings. Everyone is appreciated by me on this site.
I disagree… When the Glen calls to you, time is irrelevant.
I am a foul mouthed heathen. What the fuck are you talking about?
That’s a lot of words bro.
Kings – 108
Pels – 103
My weekly trade suggestion: Fox and two protected first rounders for Ingram
Fox for Ja Morant!
Morant and Edwards battling for MIP
I don’t even think we’d need to give up 2. At least this trade would make some sense for the roster.
Would leave us desperately inexperienced at the point and would once again send our franchise player to the swamp zone of basketball hell, but Ingram, Barnes, and Holmes turn the frontcourt into a powerful 2-way strength.
Yech! I don’t like Ingram. He’s an ok player. But, more stat filler.
IT’S A TRAP!
Has anyone seen the game thread?
&ct=g
I’d bet money that there’s a Flagrant foul coming Jonas’ way tonight at some point.
Just to prove a bit of a point.
Alex Len seems like the kind of guy to avenge Metu on principal alone.
Kings can’t sustain a lead. 10..15.. it don’t matter
Game thread?
I’m really struggling to listen to Kyle and Katie and the misplaced positivity they exude with regards to a very mediocre effort against a very mediocre Pelicans team. The Kings are a 31 win team from a year ago and arguably the worst team in the NBA over the last 15 years. I never thought I’d say it but I miss Grant and Jerry.
They were pretty harsh on the Kings in the first half of the last game, and justfiably so. I found it refreshing. Maybe their bosses didn’t?
Against Phoenix they had a nice 3rd quarter in what was otherwise a mediocre effort against a struggling Suns team. Another mediocre effort tonight, I’m frustrated and pardon me for not sharing in everyone’s optimism. I don’t see “IT” and I don’t see them playing “extremely well” as Katie just said.
How do we complain about the Kings with no game thread?
You just did
Lord, the broadcasters are so bad. At least start letting them travel. That might help. A little
This is just dumb. I’ve said it several times. Every win is going to be close. If they win…
The Meltdown Kings are damn impressive.
“Wow.” -Kayte
Walton covering himself in glory here. This team has no clue what to do down the stretch.
Announcers praising this meltdown as a learning experience. Geez, I’m getting dumber by listening
Hot take Friday night… no threads…. New Orleans is still above water apparently. Sacramento could use some more rain.
I know the Kings started 3-2 last year. With a similar schedule. All against playoff teams. They went on to lose 8 of 10 after that. 6 of the KIngs next 10 games are teams under .500. The only outlier is the Suns. I suspect they won’t be under .500 much longer. Unless CP3 has aged real quick. This upcoming stretch is about the easiest it gets for this team up until the ASB. Dallas, Utah, Pels, Hornets, Pacers, Suns, Spurs, OKC. Pistons, Minny. At a minimuum, this team needs to go at least .500 during this stretch. They really should win 6-7 of those. Pistons, OKC, SPurs, and Pacers should all be wins.9Eventhough, I can see them losing one of them) The other games are not automatic. Dallas is going to fight tomorrow after getting crushed last night. Utah will be tougher this time around since Ingles will be playing. Pels all depends on Zion’s status, Hornets are much improved over last year. Suns will be ready for the Kings second time around. Minny is my surprise team of the year. Edwards will battle JAh for MIP. If Minny’s Big 3 are having a big night they will be difficult to beat. Kings come out of this stretch a little over .500 would be nice progress over a year ago.
The next 10 games after this stretch are all playoff teams from last year.
