Kings flounder on final day of California Classic

Louis King and Emanuel Terry both played well, but the Kings couldn't find their rhythm against a physical Lakers squad.

Courtesy of Sacramento Kings

Thank God that Summer League basketball is only 40 minutes long, because yesterday’s game featuring the Sacramento Kings and L.A. Lakers was one of the ugliest basketball games I’ve seen in a long time.

If there’s one thing this Sacramento squad severely lacks, it’s outside shooting.  The Kings managed to hit just two threes out of 17 attempts despite multiple open attempts.  With no real threats from outside, the Lakers were able to crowd the paint and take away driving lanes.  The Lakers weren’t exactly lighting it up from outside either, only making 6 of their 22 attempts, but they were far more aggressive in attacking the rim instead of settling for midrange jumpers and as a result got to the free throw line far more often.  Los Angeles won this game by 10 points despite making three less field goals than the Kings in large part because they were able to shoot 28 free throws to Sacramento’s 14.

Only two Kings players were really able to get anything going.  Louis King bounced back from a terrible performance against the Warriors to lead the way for Sacramento with 19 points on 8/16 shooting.  He also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  While his outside shot still struggled to fall (just 1-4 from three), he took far better care of the ball and attacked the basket when he could.  This looked a lot more like the Louis King we saw towards the end of last season.

Emanuel Terry was the other standout for the Kings, scoring 16 points on 8-9 shooting to go with 9 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block.  He did have 6 fouls, but at least one of them looked to be a clean block that was incorrectly called a foul.  Terry’s energy and hustle saved several Kings possessions.  His only miss came on an alley-oop pass from Davion Mitchell that would have brought the house down if he had been able to stick it.

Kings rookie Davion Mitchell struggled throughout the night, posting just 10 points on 4/13 shooting to go with 4 turnovers and 7 fouls (that’s not a typo, you’re allowed 10 fouls in Summer League).  All of his points came either at the rim or the free throw line, and he failed to hit a single jumper the entire night. His foul issues weren’t as bad as they seem on paper, as he was forced to foul big men near the rim several times in order to prevent sure baskets, and one of his fouls could easily have been a drawn charge but was whistled the other way.  Mitchell was likely tired after playing heavy minutes the night before, but it was still a disappointing outing.

Robert Woodard again struggled offensively, scoring just 6 points on 1/6 shooting.  Perhaps most discouraging was how often he had the ball stripped from him as he was attacking the basket.  Woodard is supposed to be farther along than this.

Second round pick Neemias Queta made his Kings debut and played just 11 minutes, scoring 6 points and grabbing 4 rebounds.  He was easily the tallest player on the floor and moved well for his size.  I would have liked to see the Kings post him up even once, or try to run the ball through him in the high post, but he was instead relegated to pick-and-rolls and putback opportunities.  He had a couple decent moments as a passer, including a quick give-and-go with Louis King that should have been credited as an assist.  Defensively he wasn’t credited with a block either, but he definitely got a hand on a three point attempt that ended up missing badly and altered a couple other shots with his presence. He probably could have had a few more rebounds during his time on the floor as well, but failed to box out smaller Lakers players who got to the ball first.  Queta wasn’t supposed to play in the California Classic so it was nice to see him out there, and I’m guessing he’ll get more opportunity in Vegas.

Jahmi’us Ramsey, a second round pick from last year, also failed to get much going, scoring just 2 points on 1-5 shooting.  Ramsey is small for a scoring guard, and also struggled as a playmaker with 4 turnovers.

Alex Antetokounmpo, Giannis’ youngest brother, checked in for 7 minutes after not playing in the first game.  His only points came off a putback and he missed his only other shot, a wide open corner three.

Overall it was a sloppy, grindy game that epitomized Summer League basketball.  There was some good and a whole lot of bad.  This Summer League squad desperately needs someone who can hit an outside shot to open the floor up.  With the California Classic now wrapped up, the Kings will have a few days off before they head to Las Vegas.  They’ll be back in action on August 9th against the Charlotte Hornets.

Davion seems to have trouble getting around defenders, mind you he’s playing against scrubs. Ya it’s just two games, but it’s still telling for a 22 year old ready to play now player who didn’t dominate against lesser competition.

I mean, he did dominate in Game 1. I think that in aggregate the two games both showed some of the promise we expected: aggressive defense he has the the physical capabilities to play at a higher level, strong handles, scoring ability, and a high motor.

But also some of the warts: questionable shooting, some trouble finishing around length (not as much in SL), and not an elite passer/offensive leader.

I think it’s worth level setting that these players have never played together before, have virtually no set plays, and are asked to play larger roles than they may play in the NBA. So it’s very, very common to see lower assists, higher turnovers, and wonky percentages.

I think the second game may have tempered some of the enthusiasm from Mitchell’s debut. But I also think he’ll look better in an NBA offense where he drives more with the defense off balance and isn’t relied upon as a primary ball handler. I think he’ll be able to play aggressive defense while hopefully picking his spots offensively next to Fox and/or Haliburton.

Woodard reminds me of those muscled up dudes in the gym that get onto the basketball court to “get some cardio”. Sure, they grab a couple rebounds and knock some heads around, but it quickly becomes clear they have no discernible skills and possibly have never picked up a basketball in their entire life.

Ramsey is small for a scoring guard,

Ramsey is 6″3, while T. Davis is 6″4.
I don’t think Ramsey cannot be the scoring guard, all I can say is he did not get enough touch…

1) Mitchell disappointed me a bit…although he can get into the lane, but his lack of drive & kick may envision his court vision is not particularly good. And his elite D faded a bit in this game.

2) Woodard is just too robotic….got stripped again and again, and his shot is not falling at all.

3) Ramsey should be good at pushing the pace, and drive in…I hope he can do a better job next game

4) LOUIS KING !!!!!!!!!!!! This game, he showed his long arm, and his length can made a difference, his shot fell this game, and his ability to drive into the lane, and strong enough to finish underneath the basket.

5) Queta is HUGE…he needs more playing time with the above four players

Louis King looks to me like a guy that could be an NBA player. He does a number of things well, and has one skill that, at least so far, has separated him from the other players: He makes strong cuts to the basket to get himself open for easy baskets.

Mr. Terry reminds me of a certain someone just retained by the parent organization. I can’t find stats in any quantity, but I love his hustle. The limited amount of info I located suggests he doesn’t offer much offensively outside of the paint, but I hope his energy and effort help him land a spot where he can get paid to play basketball.

Louis King at least displayed he can play with those starters last year…once he got more playing time with those starters/2nd unit, his number may raise up.

Terry, to me, is just another hustle guy, made me think of Brockless Monster….(Sole skill of just hustling cannot made a difference), at least Qeuta can block shot, got size…so, rather play more Queta than Terry.

Great write up – thank you for sharing. Love when people post these recaps and analysis of the games.

FWIW, on Mitchell, some of this is the lack of familiarity with the others players and them rotating to create clear passing lanes to help Mitchell. That’s expected in Summer League.

Some of this is exactly what we saw in college from Mitchell (as noted in the draft guide). He’s good at making basic reads and can make smart plays (part of why he did have a 2.3 A/T as a senior); however, he rarely made advanced reads and when he did try to throw more advanced passes, that’s where he did have a lot of turnovers. The same questionable touch on his jumper at times can extend to his passing.

Now, that’s not a big deal if you see him as a complementary piece who really helps the defense and who hits open shots will creating opportunistically. But it is part of why some of the draft people here (and elsewhere) had questions about his overall upside. If someone is hoping he develops into another Chris Paul (lite) or even Kemba Walker, he is going to need some real development running an offense and making those reads/passes. This is where it makes a bit more of a difference that he will be 23 when the season starts instead of 19.

I definitely agree with you…and that’s why I am not high on Mitchell…his upside is just not high… he is undersized too……

We don’t have much choice left at #9 (which I understand the pick of Mitchell), and of course that’s why I prefer to trade up to get Kuminga….

Also, I mean we got T. Davis, who may do similar things to Mitchell, but with better size, then this Mitchell pick is just not my favourite…

And that’s why some people have high hope in Queta than Mitchell…all because Queta is younger, got size to be great….maybe poor-man Embiid.

After watching him the last two games, he reminds me of a young Terry Rozier, which would mean not very good. It took time for Rozier to make things happen so maybe we can hope for the same for Mitchell.

That’s a good observation and a reasonable comp. And Rozier had a couple of good seasons playing the type of role for the Celtics that Mitchell could thrive in here (which is probably why you made the observation).

Yeah, to me he may be able to be that 4th guard off the bench behind Fox, Hali, and TD (fingers crossed Buddy is being moved) much like Rozier was 4th behind Kyrie, Brown, and Smart. It will give him time to develop and learn and hopefully come into his own like a Bobby Jackson. Still, if that is the curve for him, was he worth it at #9?

At this point, mandating vaccinations for certain things appears to be the only way to move forward and get more shots in arms. We’re well past the time of waiting for those still eligible and able to get one but are not getting it.

Can you imagine joining the military, signing a contract that basically reduces you to property of the United States government, and thinking that you have a choice as to whether or not you have to get a mandatory immunization?

I’ve found it truly fascinating to see the “my body, my choice” argument recycled in such an unironic manner.

At the current rate, it’s almost inevitable. People are giving it all the time and space it needs to try out all kinds of different mutations. That said, vaccination rates are picking up again. Hopefully at least the “hesitant” people come around. We know there’s a decent percentage of people that never will.

I just hope the push to gain full approval doesn’t slow down the process of approval for younger age groups.

I think there will be an uptick due to organizations who may be holding off on mandates waiting for official approval. But I don’t think there are a huge number vaccine-hesitant individuals whose only reason for not getting it is that it’s not officially approved.

Yeah, actually worked pretty well for those of us living in Oregon.

Oregon: 27th in population
36th in total cases
48th in cases per capita

So, try again next time?

how about NY, NJ, CA etc etc…get out of here with that, OR isn’t that densely populated. Most of the state isn’t city, so thank your rural areas for your “success”

Since you asked.

COVID Cases per capita:
NY – 27th
NJ – 17th
CA – 35th

Total population:
NY – 4th
NJ – 11th
CA – 1st

As you point out, population density players a big role.

Population density ranking:
NY – 7th
NJ – 1st
CA – 11th

Actually, you have it completely backwards. Rural areas like Hermiston, Ontario, and Umatilla County fared much worse than Portland. Most of the communities in the eastern state did poorly because of the close relationship with Idaho, which did fuck all to prevent the spread and help people.

We did what we were supposed to for each other in Portland in this pandemic. From a purely epidemiological perspective, Portland was one of the best, safest cities in the country; at no point were our hospitals close to being overwhelmed.

No idea. Maybe they’ll do their hiring in Sept/Oct then Nov 1 is just providing enough time for those people to get fully vaccinated if they haven’t been already?

Nov. 1 is less than 3 months away. It takes about at least a month and a half to get both doses and give it time to fully kick in.

As I mention above, at this point I’m more focused on getting the approval for elementary aged kids. With school starting up, that will likely have a bigger impact than full approval for 12+.

There was speculation on Sept for a while. But yeah, sounds like there have been some delays in the trials.
I just spoke to an expert (my wife) and she says Pfizer still says they’ll be applying for approval for 5-11 year olds in September. But with the application for full approval that could be delayed a number of weeks. Fauci is estimating December. I’m hoping he’s just being smartly conservative (little c conservative. Not big C.) with his estimate.

I want to applaud those who are advocating for vaccines. They are safe and effective and the only ultimate way to stop the virus. I agree that “not completely approved yet” is just the current blocking excuse. When “the future people” look back on this 100 years from now, I suspect comparisons to the Plague and to 1918 Flu and comments like” what were they possibly thinking. The previous pandemics had NO cure and No prevention methods, yet the 2021 people had proven prevention methods and they opted out to the detriment of themselves and others”? Why? and the answer is not science, not reason and not objective reality but some form of subjectivity. This both saddens and angers me because the suffering we are seeing did not have to (completely) happen.
Kings- still have MLE at 4/41.
I think Monte is still big game hunting or at least mid sized game.
Not convinced Mitchel was BPA but I am not the expert. For me, Sengun and Moody were the other options. Mitchell can impact game in more ways than at least Moody.

Our district has said if you commit to independent study, you have to stay there all year. It has to do with staffing and reduce kids going back and forth. Thankfully they are requiring masks indoors, despite a loud minority making a stink about it.

Mike- respectfully. Children can get sick with COVID and some can get very sick. The mutations/variants are of particular concern for kids. and children can be carriers. We are seeing a distinct rise in infections for those under 12. The COVID virus does not ask for ID or proof of age. The relative lack of infections in that age group PROBABLY has to do with some cross immunity from similar viruses more common in kids. Delta is blowing that up.
I see this as not just about me but about my community- I want to do what I can to protect all of us.
I don’t watch CNN but I do pay attention to real science and known experts in the field. There are people who study this carefully and know more than I. I pay attention to them and what they say. The CDC is broken- and that’s a long story- and their comments have seemed contradictory. However, the main theme of their comments is on target. This is a brand new virus and “science” is running hard just trying to keep up.

NEJM Link

With the BNT162b2 vaccine, the effectiveness of two doses was 93.7% (95% CI, 91.6 to 95.3) among persons with the alpha variant and 88.0% (95% CI, 85.3 to 90.1) among those with the delta variant.

Mayo Clinic Link

This one references the same study in the NEJM link as well as summarizing various other studies regarding the vaccines’ relative effectiveness against the Delta variant.

If you have reputable sources that contradict these findings, I’d love to see them.

Mike- again respectfully. I do “stick to science” and I do with an open mind. Viruses mutate, they change and each infected person makes about a trillion copies of the virus- each copy can be imperfect. An “imperfect” copy, however, can become a more effective infectious agent. That mutation is a variation, a variant. Delta is one such copy mistake. A small change in the virus genome can have a large effect in terms of infectiveness. This is evolution sped up trillions of times-hyper speed. One single mutation led to a virus copy that was more infectious because that variation changed the shape of the spike protein which is the key that fits the ACE2 receptor on our cells. The vaccine was developed to build antibodies against that spike protein from the original COVID virus. The spike has changed shape and the vaccine is less effective. Stats in NEJM article below. Yes, I am eager to promote the vaccine and any modifications to it ( booster). I think the statement “force upon people” is beyond my intent. I am sticking to science honestly and with an open mind. I study, I read, I act and I use evidence to support those behaviors. “Science” has said all along that with the huge numbers of copies of the virus in infected persons that a mutation, a variant would occur and would become more dominant because it is more dangerous and this is exactly what has happened with Delta. This was predicted by “science”. Respectfully, I am not sure what an open mind means. I do not have a false equivalency that tells me that vaccines and no vaccines have equal value for safety. One option is safer than the other.
I want people to be safe and healthy.

Unfortunately cognitive bias is alive and well with many these days. Mike seems to be an example of that. I’m glad you are here setting the record straight.

I mean, I could make and argument here against the effectiveness of umbrellas, condoms, teeth brushing, or seat belts, but I think we’ve (hopefully) come to the realization as a society that they work. Maybe not 100%, but they work.

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6924e2.htm?s_cid=mm6924e2_w#T3_down

Among kids without underlying health conditions, kids 0-9 with a confirmed COVID case have a 1 in 25 chance of landing in the hospital. For kids 10-19, it’s a 1 in 50 chance.

Kids don’t die, but most people with kids like a little space between “Great” and “Not dead.”

Freedom is not the ability to ignore the rules of the society of which you are a part when you so choose. Freedom is the ability to participate in the making of those rules. Peacefully. It’s also the ability to leave if you reach a point where you can no longer tolerate the will of the majority.

So you totally the right to not agree with masks, and getting vaccinated. But if it becomes the law, as it should, then freedom does not give you the ability to ignore it.

Clear?

Giving up freedom for government protection is not a smart way to move forward. By doing this, you draw no hard lines and therefore give the government an open book to “protect” you in whatever way they deem fit. Things are already getting scary and they’re just going to get worse if people continue to allow the government to take away their freedom.

The freedom to swing your arms around ends at the tip of my nose. No one gets to unilaterally decide to act/decline to act when consequences to other people are so likely, and in this case, potentially deadly.

If you don’t have a condition* that precludes you from being vaccinated, grow up, and think of someone other than yourself.

*Pants-shitting irrational fear and susceptibility to conspiracy theories are not qualifying conditions.

It’s interesting that it’s invariably the “my country, right or wrong” crew are the only ones that believe that any of their rights are absolute.

The Constitution and Bill of Rights are the result of some of the highest-level thinking ever gathered in one place. Confidence in their successors to uphold the letter, let alone the spirit of those documents is pure fantasy.

My Theory of Human Intelligence is that a planet has a finite amount of IQ points in a pool available to any sentient inhabitants. The population of the Earth has never been larger, and it grows in a J-curve.

I refer again to “finite number of IQ points.”

On the other hand, there is a significantly large number of anti-intellectuals that are actually intelligent (for example, the highest % of climate-deniers tend to be affluent and college-educated). So, separate out the true rubes, and I guess you’re left with some mix of self-interest, bigots, authoritarianists, zealots, and cynics/trolls.

I am not confusing them. Intelligence and greed are not mutually exclusive.

Just because people might make stupid arguments, doesn’t mean they themselves are necessarily stupid. They may fully well know that the arguments is stupid, but making an intelligent argument is not the objective. Disinformation is often the objective.

un-FDA approved vax

If you’re going to make nonsense, provably false arguments, make better ones. You keep talking about “studies” and not citing any, and then people (ahem) cite studies that say the opposite of your opinion, and you look like a fool.

Instead, find some fringe doctor or something that creates nonsense studies that appear academic and just cite those over and over. This junk is all over Facebook, so it’s not hard to find.

Same thing with FDA approval. If you use FDA-approval as your metric, and then FDA approves, which they will, you look like a putz. Instead, use fake information to attack the integrity of the FDA and the CDC, say Fauci’s retirement fund has billions in Pfizer stock, etc.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. You’re welcome.

It reminds me of back when this all started, the chiropractors from the Modesto (?) area that made the media rounds giving their “expert medical opinion” that covid is essentially another scarier name for the common cold that the democrats dreamed up. They usually wore scrubs to look super medical.

Truth. Citing that the vaccine is not FDA approved is nonsense. I wonder how many anti-vax folks are out there are buying stuff off of Amazon or fringe television networks without realizing how much of it is not FDA approved.

Anyone out there who has taken some silver supplement or did an enema with some kind of coffee extract, but is anti-vax is either a total hypocrite or completely uninformed. Folks would be shocked at how many things sold online or in stores aren’t “FDA approved.”

I find it disgusting that the same people who rant about the vaccine not being safe are also peddling garbage consumables to their listeners and viewers.

Indeed. The same folks who think a teaspoon each of lemongrass and honeysuckle essential oils is apparently a “proven” cure for polio. Either that, or one could just drink a cup a day of colloidal silver, according to some forum that ended in .biz

Mike- respectfully again. This is not the right forum for a long discussion on this topic, so I will make one more comment and then stop. First I do wish that we could have the opportunity to walk through your concerns. We don’t and won’t.
FDA approval is a long process and is meant as a safeguard. At the same time, this crisis was deemed too important and the data so compelling that the decision was made to move forward. No one has died from the vaccine. While there has been side effects due to the natural immune response ( fever, arm pain fatigue etc.) there have been minimal actual hypersensitivity reactions not to the mRNA but to the components in the lipid nanoparticle that protects the inner “payload” No deaths.
The mRNA vaccines are over 80% effective against ALL variants, even up to 4-6 months past inoculation. Not “roughly 40%”
The current Delta variant is a SERIOUS threat to more than older, unhealthy or immunocompromised folks. ICU’s across the entire country are filling with younger patients, not ion those categories. They are sick and are dying. Pediatric ICU’s are filling- look at data from LA, Missouri and Arkansas. Most admits are non-vaccinated people. That’s the data. Vaccines make a difference.
I am glad you are vaccinated now. This could save a life.
Freedom is about the “other” as well as about “me”

Few things I noticed last night:

  • Mitchell looked completely gassed. He was noticably slower then he was during game 1, and often chose to settle for longer jumpers. Although part of that seemed to be because…
  • The spacing was awful the entire game. This is partially because the Kings don’t have a lot of outside shooting, and the Lakers were packing the paint the entire night. It didn’t help that most of the Kings players seemed to pass up open 3’s, particularly in the 2nd half.
  • 2 games into the Bobby Jackson experience and I am not impressed. While it’s not like the other teams were running the Triangle or anything, there was clearly much more movement on the Lakers side. If the Kings couldn’t get a 1-on-1 advantage right away, they just threw it around the horn until someone has to chuck it (or they slashed anyways and turned the ball over). Even an ATO play resulted in a turnover when it just looked like “throw the ball into the post.”

There was no evidence at all of plays being run. I watched Bobby coaching an AAU team against my kid a few years ago, and his strategy seemed to be to get as many athletes as he could, and let them do whatever they wanted.

It didn’t work with high schoolers, and it sure as hell isn’t going to be enough when you don’t have vastly superior athleticism.

He’s just jumped to the top of the field to replace Luke Walton.

I do think the Warriors do have the pieces to get him. Any combo of Wiseman, Wiggins, Kuminga, Moody and a picks gets it done.

That would be a good fit for Simmons. The Warriors have done well with Draymond as a defensive anchor & point forward, and there wouldn’t be much pressure on Simmons to score in that offense. He’d be a natural successor to Green as he gets older.

Very interested to see what it would cost.

Back to basketball. A relief that is.
duds believe that 3 young guys + Wiggins is too much. Stalemate.
Wiggins has to be include for $. and are Simmonds and day-day redundant?
I think it would be fascination to see Bob Myers trade any of the young guys after being so effusive about how these are just who we wanted all along.

Sam Amick had some interesting comments on this with Carmichael Dave today. Basically said that Simmons not being moved could likely be attributed to Morey’s view of players as assets, not people, and not caring if there are personality conflicts. He pointed out Morey’s history of this with players like Harden/Howard.

Just as I didn’t want to overreact to Mitchell looking good in game one, I’m not going to overreact to players struggling last night.

It’s summer league. You hope guys look good, but it’s not the end of the world if they look bad in this setting.

Take Woodard for example. He’s looked rough, no question. But in the G League Bubble last season, with far more of a structure and team around him, he looked really promising.

It occurs to me that Mitchell may have never seen a VCR.

Besides, Walton is definitely more of a Fast & Furious aficionado. Dumb guy, bad at his chosen profession, speaks in monosyllabic grunts? He’s the Vin Diesel of coaches.

Still can’t figure out how that guy was cast for Saving Private Ryan. Was Lurch unavailable?

he looked really promising

No he didn’t. He shot 41% in the G League. He made 21% of his 3s but jacked 4 per game.

Why is he jacking so many 3s when he is a bricklayer? Why does he not exploit his strength advantage?

If a player is that ineffecient offensively, he better be elite as a defender, and Woodard is pretty lousy as defender, can’t guard on the perimter, slow reaction time on the interior, barely 6’6″, giving up 2-3 inches or more.

I dont even see him use his physicality to carve out space. What is there really to like about him on either of the floor? Nothing, as has been the case since Day One.

For a player of Woodard profile to find a niche, he would need more quickness, especially laterally, more anticipation , better first step, more of a fast twitch athlete, getting more of the 50/50 balls.

He would have to overhaul his offensive approach too, cure himself of the Bagley / Willie Syndrome that makes a player think he is an offensive force when he is rather anemic and rudimentary.

He then would need to focus and come to love the less glamorous aspects of the game. So Woodard has all sorts of problems, mental, physical, fundamental, and the chance they sort themselves out are about 0.1%.

I am still waiting for Woodard to make one impressive play.

I’d quibble about whether Tyrese Haliburton is an established NBA player at this particular moment, but aside from that, I get the cautiousness. I’d think getting him some competitive run and the chance to see if he can elevate lesser talent would be desirable for him, particularly after being sidelined by a freak injury.

Easy now. It was a scrimmage. I like how Mitchell can score with either hand and has no hesitation to stop the ball in the paint. Queta is a big big. On to Vegas.

Two times I found joy in unexpected places:

  1. Stopped for a bite to eat on a roadtrip at the first place we saw. Inside we were amazed to find that the entire restaurant was full of aquariums and fish. Didn’t realize until I later finally watched Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas that this restaurant — Bahooka — was in that film. (The restaurant was so cool and I had hoped to go back, but sadly it closed in 2013.)
  2. Drove back from Joshua Tree and saw giant dinosaurs on the side of the road. Soon realized this was the site where they filmed the Dinosaur exhibit sequence in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. The Cabazon Dinosaurs are still around!

#2 – Cabazon! Stopped there once, just so I could stand near the dinosaur and say, “Tell me about your big but, Simone.”

Wait a minute. I saw Andy Sims post a comment just the other day mentioning a ‘Simone’. What in the heck?

That was an agonizingly-long stretch in response to a comment relaying a rumor about four sources removed from anyone who might possibly be in the know on the subject. My remark was Ben Stein’s reply to Simone’s 31 Flavors rant about how close to death our beloved Ferris Bueller may have been.

I have no fear of operating on a thread so thin that it’s basically invisible, but which I can assure you exists.

Ohhhh. I wasn’t sure. Thought maybe you were making a Head Of The Class tv show reference (Simone was the redhead).

Well, good choice! I love Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Summer league is pointless they should just get rid of it. People actually care about the outcomes

The outcomes are the evaluations of players and lineups that result from the games. Final scores are irrelevant.

I come back to thread after a few hours and wonder how the hell there are 185 comments after a summer league game?

Trade!?!?? Signing!?!? Vivek sold the team!?!?

Then I read the middle of the thread. Color me disappointed…but not surprised I guess 🤦

Saw that there were 200+ comments about a summer league game and thought the same kind of thing- what’d I miss?

Ditto about the middle part, which is why just I scrolled right past that section.

Well, it’s a fine line. For me personally, one of the main reasons I come around these parts is to escape the hassles of day to day life to commiserate with other fans, so it is a bit of downer when polarizing non basketball/kings related topics turn into the inevitable back and forth type stuff. That said, I don’t pay the bills around here, so I have zero say in those matters and it is moderated if people cross lines. So, it ultimately just turns into a scroll and move along exercise for me.

The level of conversation for non-sports topics is generally a hell of a lot better here than it is on news sites and “news” sites. There is a wide range of expertise found among you that has somehow not translated into you supporting a better basketball team.

We all have our blind spots.

I understand that such topics are outside the scope of the site, but with Covid in particular having such a profound effect on so many parts of our lives, this sort of thing is bound to happen. It leans heavily toward the exception rather than the rule, and I think it’s generally positive when it occurs.

Now let me explain why Asians are terrible 1/500:

Eh, I’d rather deal with the reality so we can put it behind us, rather than avoid it. That said, again, you can easily scroll past or collapse threads you aren’t interested in. I do it all the time.

Well, it’s everywhere you look, listen, and breathe, so lucky for you there is no avoiding it. An hour a day away can do wonders for mental health though, just saying. And scrolling past 100 site crashing gifs debating absolutely nothing new isn’t as easy as you suggest. Maybe I need to up my internet speed.

I came to the realization years ago that, in using the strict definition of the word, everything is politics.

However, given that immunization/vaccination science has been bedrock scientific fact for a couple of centuries, the current politicization of this preventative approach isn’t strictly political. Truth be told, it speaks to the psychological makeup of the 20-30% of the human population that is overly deferential to authority, and susceptible to charismatic cult leader-types.

I know he went to Baylor, but Davion needs to make the UTEP 2 Step part of his arsenal and just attack the basket when the shot isn’t falling.
If he can be Tim Hardaway at the offensive end and Tony Allen at the defensive end, that’s a potent combination of skills.
