Kings 126, Raptors 124: Wham Bam Thank You Tampa

The Sacramento Kings rolled into the Raptor's southern home and rolled out with their third victory in row.
By | 117 Comments | Jan 29, 2021

KangzThe Kings started tonight’s game absolutely scorching hot from deep and pass-happy as hell, and managed to hang on after some late game Kangzing to secure a vengeance win against the Toronto Raptors, winning 126-124.

De’Aaron Fox was the leading man for the Kings for most of this game and finished with 24 points to go with 4 assists and  2 rebounds. He controlled the pace of the game, showed off his lightning quick speed with a series of dazzling contested layups and generally did what De’Aaron Fox does. He wasn’t perfect, with 7 turnovers tonight, but this was a night where he looked like the best player on the floor. He also took a shot to his left knee with about 4 minutes left in the game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see if he’s questionable for tomorrow’s game in Miami. Rookie Tyrese Haliburton did everything but score efficiently tonight, going for 10 points, with 6 rebounds and a career high 11 assists to add to it. Haliburton started rough with two very rookie-esque passes for turnovers in the first quarter but made up for them with 6 assists in the first fifteen minutes of the game. While his shooting 4-10 overall and 1-7 from deep is not great on the eyes, Haliburton was doing what Haliburton does all night and it didn’t feel nearly that rough. His one made three came at a critical moment in the fourth and he shot it with absolute confidence despite his earlier struggles from deep.

The first quarter of Friday night’s game was all Harrison Barnes. He was perfect in the first – going for 13 points, 4-4 from the field include three makes from deep. Barnes finished with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, but it was his strong start that got the Kings the early lead that they never really looked back. Buddy Hield had himself another big game from behind the arc and he’s starting to look like he’s finally found his footing after the first 15 or so games saw him struggling. Buddy ended up with 22 points, going 5-8 from deep.

Richaun Holmes got beat up on all night and more than a few times the guy got mauled going for rebounds only to have the refs swallow their whistles. He chipped in 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks but was plagued with foul trouble the whole night. Late in the game as Toronto closed the gap to single digits, Holmes was assessed his 6th foul for a shrug that wouldn’t have knocked an empty Big Gulp on its side. His obvious frustration spilled over to him in the arena tunnel obviously fuming at what had happened and honestly, his frustration is well deserved. The refs were a bit lopsided tonight and most of it was turning a blind eye to Holmes getting bushwhacked all night.

Marvin Bagley might have only played 20 minutes tonight but he still found a way to be noticed, adding 7 points and 5 rebounds with some memorable play in the first half. He was still targeted often for some isolation against Pascal Siakam, but held his own, especially in the first when he had back to back possessions where he put the clamps on the guy.  He also had a great offensive sequence where he backed Siakam down and then threw an old school Boogie Cousins spin on Siakam for a score. Pascal then came down on the other end and on a spin dribble at the top of the key, froze and dropped Bagley on his way to an open dunk. He’s improving, not perfect.

This game saw the Kings pulling ahead at the end of the first and then maintaining their cushion right up until the point where Kings fans felt comfortable in their chances of seeing the Kings winning their third in a row. Sure, Toronto got within two a couple of times but the Kings executed late against a decent team and never truly felt like the game was slipping away. This goes down as a two point game, but it rarely felt like that.

Random Notes on the Night

Notes: Marvin Bagley is really starting to love those corner threes. While he was only 1-4 from deep tonight, his confidence in that shot is starting to show.

When Hassan Whiteside gets the ball, it’s headed towards the rim. The man has no need for extra passes. 16 points on 6-7 shooting means it worked out for Sacramento tonight. He also added 9 rebounds and shot 4-6 from the free throw line.

Kings started 7-12 from 3 in the first quarter to the Raptors 2-7. They finished the game shooting 16-36 while the Raptors with 13 -32.

The Kings had 19 assists in the first half of this one. The ball movement was crisper than it’s been in weeks and I found myself enjoying watching the game. Like, truly enjoying it.

Aron Baynes, the Raptors starting center for sixteen of their games this season, recorded his first free throw attempts tonight. Toronto.

The Kings don’t have much time to think about this one – they have a game tomorrow evening at 5 pm in Miami! I’ll see you all tomorrow morning!

Maybe he makes good teams fall to .500 level and makes bad teams rise to .500 level? Is that the Whiteside effect? If true, then Whiteside all day everyday please.

In 19-20, Kings started 0-5.
Then went 12-9.
Then went 3-15.
Then went 13-7.
Then went 3-5 in the bubble.

In 20-21. Kings started 3-1, then 2-9, now 3-0 so far.

This team is as inconsistent record wise as they are quarter by quarter every game. I have no suggestions except a new coach please. But yes I’ll still enjoy every 3 game win streak and watch every 5 game losing streak as long as Tyrese plays.

Besides Coach. Team still needs the Alpha Dog Star. This team’s current ceiling is mediocre/average with this lineup. Without a bonafide All Star this team will never compete for a championship. If the goal is too get a 7-8 seed or play in, sure. We will find out between now and the deadline. What’s McNair’s plan for this team?

The Kings only shot is landing a Top pick or trading a lot of assets to land a Star. Last time I checked there wasn’t many. The obvious targets Lavine, Beal, Drummond, etc. I saw the Doncic interview last night after the Jazz demolition.. Red flags in Dallas. Sounded like he was giving Dallas an ultimatum to get some help. Problem is: Dallas has got nothing any team wants. No picks and average players.

A fun fact: Half the league has a losing record. Under .500.If that’s not purposeful tanking, I don’t know what is

No doubt the Kings need an Alpha dog, but the coaching to me stands out the most because any team can still be competive and look more competitive in losses and more impressive in wins than we have.

The Thunder are perennial preseason Lottery winners but overachieve. Good for the players but bad for the tank. The Knicks have lesser talent than we do and are younger. Last year they were arguably the worse roster besides Detroit. Competent coaching is the difference IMO.

KAT, Lavine, and DBook have suffered for years without the right coach, Beal is suffering right now. An alpha can’t carry bad defensive rotations, not telling your big to step up on pull up 3s off screens, amd continuing to play slow on a team that should be running.

Don’t forget this young core with worse role players were 30-27 at the All-Star break with Joerger. We have a better roster now with a worse coach.

Haliburton has become the glue of this team. When he is in the game, I feel confident that things will be ok. He takes care of everybody and is all over the place when it comes to defense. His BBIQ is off the charts and he rarely makes mistakes while handling the ball. Bottom line is…we got a gem in Hali.

I never complain about the officiating but I thought it was terrible in general yesterday. I also didn’t think it is was lopsided for the Kings. There were horrible calls against the Kings but there were also horrible calls against the Raptors.

I love that Haliburton treats the end of the game differently. It’s like when you’re on a date and you have to make a move when you’re walking your date up to the door. It’s time to close the deal. Some people get nervous and do a quick handshake, or an awkward side hug. But not our boy Tyrese!

That was a quality win with no qualifications unlike the previous two. My biggest criticism is that often during crunch time the offense gets stagnant. There was good ball movement throughout the game and suddenly with 6 minutes left, we primarily played isolation basketball and it almost bit us in the rear.

The poise of Haliburton only 18 games into his NBA career is incredible. After several good games Bagley really struggled tonight on both ends of the floor. I’ll be very interested in how he responds tomorrow. His team defense will be tested again against the Heat who have one of the better half court offenses in the league despite their current struggles. Bagley looked lost defensively tonight but it didn’t appear to be due to a lack of effort.

What to do with Whiteside going forward? I guess it gets down to the objectives of the season. At times like tonight, he is the best alternative in the post and gives us the best chance to win. With that said, he doesn’t figure into the future so how much do you play him. If nothing else he is showing the value of a strong post presence even in the modern game.

Thankful for the win even with the hiccups. Now on pace to win 32 games which is better than almost all prognosticators predicted.

Haliburton is so good. That dunk on Baynes and his clutch 3 are the highlights of this game.

The referees were atrocious. I get setting a physical tone and that affecting calls, but it is impossible to swipe that much and get the ball or no contact 100% of the time.

I just knew that Haliburton Three was going in. He hadn’t hit one all night, but he’s a gamer and the game was on the line!

Was surprised we went with Whiteside when Holmes fouled out. I guess he earned it with his earlier play, but he was also getting schooled defensively and haphazardly going for blocks. He’s also the worst free throw shooter on the team. Didn’t make a whole lot of sense to bring him in there imo. It would have been a good opportunity to get Bagley some crunch time minutes in a close game to see if he could step up to the plate.

That was one of Cojo’s best games as a King.

Those refs were garbage. Keep waiting for Fox to get some respect from the Zebras, but it’s not coming.

Holmes didn’t have a good game, but he came through with that big block as the Raptors were trying to claw back into the game.

8 years in the league and this is easily Barnes’ best season thus far (if he were to keep it up-hope he does!)

Great team win

I’ll take the W. Lots of positives, but I really have to mention that the 4th quarter was a different story entirely. Raptors dominated, forcing 8 turnovers including 4 by Fox, all until … well, maybe I don’t want to overstate this but … Tyrese stepped up in a big way, and not just with that swished 3 (but especially with that swished 3). Streaking!!!

The Raps were WWEing it most of the 4th and the refs let them. Whiteside got hammered from two sides on his attempted shot late in the game. He should have had four free throws. Horrible officiating.

That one play was a bit nuts, but other than that, it looked like good D, put the Kings in straight jackets. Shock effect. Kings looked Brad Hamilton getting robbed at gunpoint until he poured the coffee in the guy’s face.

Harrison was wrestled to a dead stop, once to the ground, going to the rim twice within three offensive sets. The refs lost control of that game allowing fouls they called earlier in the game.

NorCal,

I don’t usually go looking for the two minute report, but I will on the Lowry T. He had been walking across the lane before Kings free throws, I don’t think it was that, but maybe he was warned and he said something. That’s a raw ass guess though. One other play was the foul called on Halliburton. He was not in position to secure a rebound but he did sky to try to tip the ball to a teammate. 4th quarter. He must have hit the Raptor players wrist or forearm. Just two calls that stick out in my mind too.

Really? I thought it was self explanatory. Triple Double Magnates. Point’s that shoot first, but willing passers if it gets them an assist. Volume Scorers that shoot more than anyone on the team despite poor shooting %’s. Lots of dribbling. Extremely High Usage players that always have the ball, and always need the ball to be effective. Their styles are different but the results will be the same: Multiple All- Star Games, maybe an MVP or a Triple Double averaged for a season, likely zero championships.

If we’re being honest the only place I’m wrong is to write off Doncic’s opportunity to win a championship. Because he’s so young. I do feel though that it will be the likely outcome, unless he does some super team move and really alters the way he plays, so that he’s a distributor first and scorer second.

So where does that place Kobe, who was an unwilling passer but was a volume shooter with “poor” shooting%?

Luka’s career TS% is higher than Kobe’s, and significantly higer than Westbrook’s.

And the not a championship criticism is a bit weak, IMO. Many great players never got a ring because they had the misfortune to be in era’s with even better players or teams. And with Luka it still is TBD.

I would offer to trade Luka straight up for any pair of players on this roster. I don’t say “without hesitation”, because it would hurt to trade Burt, but in the end I’d do it. And Dallas would (righfully) laugh in my face and hang up the phone.

You may not like my answer on Kobe but I think he’s one of the most overrated “greats” of all time. He had a propensity for hitting big shots, but also for taking some absolutely terrible shots, and getting ran through by mediocre teams without Shaq or Pau. It’s also a bit much to compare career TS% of guys who played 2.5 seasons to guys who played 20 and 13 seasons respectively. TS% can also be skewed by guys who get gifted easy foul shots. Luka already gets the vet treatment from refs, which is weird because he still bitches and moans more than most about foul calls. I wish Fox would get those calls. I agree the no championship criticism can be weak, but I stand by it, and would bet a large sum that guy never lifts a trophy. I’m sure Westbrook will probably make the hall of fame as well. Those types of guys are just not the type of basketball I personally enjoy. I’m quite glad he’s not a King.

I mean, this is kind of silly. Westbrook did this type of thing in spite of having Kevin Durant on his roster. Doncic has very little to work with there in Dallas.

Still, I took a look a their numbers through the first two full seasons. It’s not remotely close, Doncic has been far better than Westbrook at similar points in their careers.

I get that you don’t like the style of play, but these are different basketball players.

LOL. Doncic has been a top-5 player in the league this season. His assist rate is over 50%, so he’s a willing passer pretty much all the time.

Has anyone, I dunno, looked at the top minutes guys on that roster outside of Doncic?:

Tim Hardaway, Jr.
Trey Burke
James Johnson
Jalen Brunsen
Willie Cauley-Stein
Josh RIchardson

The answer was in front of you the entire time, you just had to look a little harder.

Comparing Doncic to Westbrook is just wrong. Westbrook has been on numerous teams that have been loaded. Westbrook is finally on a garbage team trying to force his way out of Washington because they stink. Doncic is a leader. Westbrook could never lead a team.

That’s a lot of qualifiers…

Bagley is a more athletic, less skilled and poorer defender Chris Bosh. 11 time All Star he will be!

See it’s that easy to get a a multi time All Star on the roster.

Thumbs up. I don’t disagree really. Except maybe the skill part, I feel they’re fairly equal comparing them at this stages in their career. But there should be a few asterisks. He never averaged less than 32 minutes a game, even as a 19 year old rookie, in which Bagley’s 19 year old rookie season outperforms. Bags has seen maybe 5 or 6 games total around 32 minutes a game. And he was an 11 time All Star in the East. If he was in the West it wouldn’t have been nearly as high.

Yikes. Ummm…that was a joke. I wasn’t expecting the actual analysis of Bosh vs Bagley other than they are left handed, lanky, power forwards from the ACC. I think that it pretty much ends right there…

Worst officiating I’ve seen in a while. Fox, Barnes, Holmes, and even Whiteside were beat up on all game. It was so bad, it looked like someone was going to get hurt or that a fight was going to start.

Ok. The officiating was not good, but if you are going to extend your arm at the top of the key after making contact you are going to get called for a foul whether or not you knock over a big gulp.

Harrison Barnes was good. So was Fox. Buddy was as well. Hassan is not deserving of being a minimum salary player.

How in the hell can the Geico assist of the game be on a play that ended in a foul but no bucket? Come, seriously! That is not even an assist. That is minor league shit right there.

Time for our professional announcing crew to pay attention to the game. Lowry got called for a violation on a Fox missed free throw. He got another shot. The crew didn’t mention it. They didn’t even notice it. Come on, man! Be entertaining if you want. Just don’t forget to call the game.

I think Marvin maxes out at Brian Grant…which wouldn’t be so bad. Ultimately Marvin is not responsible for his draft position and we all probably need to let that part of the critique go. I’m encouraged by his 3 point stroke and his recent shot selection. I’m discouraged by his touch down low. There isn’t any.

Good not great win against a good but not great team. I’ll take it.

TKH is the best sports forum I frequent. I’ll take that too.

More like a watch for it. It happens more than you think. At least more than it should and when Lowry got the hook late in the game it was in the same situation. Somebody at the foul line.

I know it’s tough, but these guys are professional announcers with a professional production crew. No excuse for the assist of the game not being an assist. Right?

I’m really just trying to make specific examples of where I think they are lacking. I don’t want to be hating on the crew without having the courtesy to be explicit. I think there is too much these guys suck because they suck smack on this board. Just my 2 cents anyway…it’s not like I have their jobs in my hand.

A few good games, a few bad games. Top-10 offense, last in defense, 28th in the NBA in Net Rating overall. Outside of Bagley and Haliburton, this team isn’t all that young and holding a few large contracts that won’t be easy to move.

These occasional flashes of competence do a good job of keeping the optimism flowing, though.

Yup, and we need to remember that just a week ago the Kings had a historically bad defensive streak. Like I said down below, these wins don’t impress me that much. The’ve beaten two bad teams missing key players.

This is kind of how it goes for mediocre NBA teams, they’ll get “hot” and win a game or two against teams that should beat them. But they’ll also lose winnable games at home against bad basketball teams.

Outside of one season, we’ve been watching this same movie over and over for about fifteen years. Will this time be different? I don’t see anything in the metrics or individual player development that tells me so, outside of Haliburton’s upside.

IMO, the only thing that will change it is trading away key players like Barnes and Buddy for assets and really focus on this draft and the next one, otherwise it will just be more of the same.

You’re correct they are a mediocre team and they are exhibiting the typical win loss sequence of a team at their level. A couple of things a would take exception to. You said on another post they were a much worse team this year and they are not. You also said they are not that young. Maybe in terms of average age on the roster but we are young enough where in may potentially count with Fox, Haliburton, Bagley and even Holmes. Whiteside, Bjelica and Joseph are not long for this roster and that will bring the average age down. They are in decent position right now but they have to make next years draft count big and the big wild card to me is Bagley’s development. With that said, chasing down a late playoff seed that probably won’t happen anyway is not the way to go. I would be giving more minutes to the young guys even if it cost us some victories which would actually be a blessing in disguise. I absolutely love the way OKC is using their roster and they have a plethora of young guys Bazely, Dort, Maledon, Diallo none of who were high draft picks developing game in and game out. That to me is the blueprint the Kings should be following.

Personally, this is always my answer to the tanking question:

28th in the NBA in Net Rating overall

This team is bad but they just played 3 teams that are either also bad or decimated by injuries/Covid. They are playing another one of those teams tonight in the Heat (though Butler might be back so we’ll see). I still think this is a bottom 5 roster in terms of talent and they’ve actually been pretty lucky in close games and have won a decent amount more than they should have. I would guess they still end up around the 5th worst record in the league. I think Haliburton might be their biggest impediment to being really bad though which is fine with me because it just means we’ve got one more piece that will actually help make this team relevant at some point in the future.

FUCK the Raptors. They tried to bitch us. Nah bro. There was a time when teams feared us and knew DC would punch you in the mouth (see Rick Fox). We’re starting to look scrappy and if you try to bitch this team, you will get punched squarely in the mouth.

Get rid of Walton now. I bet we’re higher than the 8th seed with a competent coach. We are only like maybe 6.5 games out of first place. Fuck chasing the 8th seed. Let’s chase home court advantage (if no bubble) and start chasing championships.

It’s only a mindset. These kids know how to play. We are talented. These kids have to get to a point where they will do absolutely whatever it takes to win. We gotta shorten the rotations to only the dogs. The refs did their BEST to sway that game Toronto’s way. If that’s the case, fuck the refs too. We’ll just have to destroy teams. No love lost after the game, but during the game, the other team is meat, and these kids are looking hungry.

Logic…DENIED

These road games are primers. We have a brutal stretch coming. We may not win 1, but they are almost at a point where they are playing more comfortably and more competitively. Now comes consistency. We’ll be either be a force after that stretch or Walton is fired during that stretch. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Oh, here’s a “STAMP IT” for you too!

Great win , guys! We needed it! 2 wins from .500.

Let the record show when Whiteside missed that jam, he had the presence of mind to get his miss and find Haliburton for the biggest shot of the game.

Replace Whiteside with Bagley and guess how that possession plays out. I don’t think it ends as well, Bagley forces the issue, misses the open teammate, I don’t think we win that game if the coach puts Bagley in for Holmes instead of Whiteside.

Whiteside did not do much in his final stint with that one exception, unlike his dominance in the 1st half, but he gives the team presence and stability and confidence they simply lack when Bagley tries to impersonate a competent frontline player.

Thank goodness Bagley’s role has been limited to PF and his minutes are getting squeezed because he’s simply not very good. He’s a 20-25 MPG until he proves otherwise.

Who wants to trade Buddy now? I don’t! Just like I don’t want to trade Barnes, never have, why would we when both can be more valuable to us than anything we would get back?!

When we were debating the value of Bogi, bringing him back or cutting him loose, one thing I said that depressed Bogi’s value is he never shot 40% from 3, and he was not as durable as Buddy. Well, well, well, after getting his big deal and screwing us out of a great two way prospect in DiVincenzo, Bogi has played 9 games this season and is shooting 36% from 3.

Buddy for all his monumental struggles, shot discernment issues, has played every game and after making 12 out of 20 of his last 3 pointers has his shooting from 3 up to 40%!

Imagine that, for all the woes Buddy has gone through, and I labeled him the biggest problem on the team when he was blindly launching with no space or conscience, he is back to his former best self, when he peaked a 59% TS% in 2018-2019.

Buddy is catching fire like very few players in the NBA can, he is in lofty territory in terms of his ability to just make 3s like lay-ups.

All those fans harping on trade Buddy , keep Bogi, might want to ponder how it has played out so far. We are talking about two flawed players, obviously, but Buddy has a durability and accuracy from deep that Bogi cannot match.

With two elite set-up men in the making, how do you justify trying to pump and dump Buddy to the highest bidder ASAP?!?

As long as Buddy is not making bad decisions with the ball, something that he should have outgrown 1-3 seasons ago, he is a formidabble weapon that should not be undervalued.

Bogi is the better playermaker and can play spot PG vs Buddy , but Haliburton is superior to Bogi as an overall PG and defender. So our GM made the prudent decision not to commit to Bogi, it was just unfortunate we could not land DiVincenzo or we would easily be on our way to the playoffs!

Buddy shots from 3 are down a tick from 75% to 72%, still insanely high. I would like to see this number come down to 60% in context of simply using improved shot discretion and less forcing of the issue, knowing Haliburton and Fox are looking for you. Additionally, Whiteside helps Buddy get good shots with high picks, and presto, our defense improves when Buddy is not mindlessly launching leaving us vulnerable and deflated in transition.

What to look for going forward: It is not sustainable for Buddy to shoot 60%. But what is sustainable is improved shot discretion , taking clean looks, not dribbling into trouble so often, relying on the flow and the set-up from teammates to get loose. Then effeciency will take care of itself, hoppefully incluiding more FTs, and the hot streaks will be had.

Buddy failed miserably in this regard for first 16 games. Before last two games when he made 60% FGs, and a TS% near 80%, he failed to make half his shots in 15 out of 16 games.
Think if it, less than 50% accuracy in 94% of your games. Only one game he made 6-11 FGs, that is a serious slump that must be rectified if team and individual success is to persist.

Lastly I want to emphasize the correlation between Buddy’s bad shots and our woeful team defense. If Buddy curtails the bogus FGAs I suspect our team defense numbers will improve. You cannot waste possessions like he has then expect your defense will not bend and break. Even possessions that result in a quality miss are preferrable to the delusional gun slinging that Buddy has been guilty of.

Consistent shot making is not a certainty but what should be a constant is consistent smart decisions.

There’s a good chance the game goes to OT if the Kings scored two points on Whiteside’s huge offensive rebound. Glad Whiteside didn’t try to force a shot and instead found Hali for the clutch 3.

I’m not going to get too excited about these wins. As good as the Kings looked, they played against two teams that were both missing multiple key players. Now, if the Kings can beat Miami tonight, with Jimmy Butler playing, while matching the team effort recently shown, you might get my attention.

Right now I chalk these wins up to a bit of injury luck coupled with the Kings bringing their absolute A game. We’ve seen the Kings be consistently inconsistent dozens of times over the last dozen years. Until that changes, I’ll keep checking out Tankathon.

Toronto is a disaster. I really don’t see why a team with so much talent is one of the worst in the league. Sure, Lowery’s not the same player. But, Siakam, Onuouby, Van Fleet, Boucher, etc. I used to think Nurse was a good coach. Now, I am thinking he was a benefactor of having Kawhi.

Kings only win this game because of Hali. It was a hideous 4th QTr. Raptors get within a point 117-116. Hali misses that 3, I think the Raptors win. That’s a Big Time shot in crunch time.

They went all for the championship team. Losing Kawhi, Ibaka, and Gasol for nothing really hurts. Had they lost VanFleet, they’d be in a really tough spot. Lowry is a shell of his former self, but at least he is a $30M expiring contract.

Yeah your right, Nurse must be worse at coaching and know less about basketball than he did 2 years ago. It’s almost as if “good” coaches go hand in hand with good players.
