This morning Vox Media announced layoffs of 7% of their workforce, with major cuts impacting SB Nation. The impact is hard to fully know, because that company has never been great about clearly communicating what they’ve just done to their sites, but what we know so far is that many of our friends and former colleagues are impacted. Several team sites are shutting down entirely and scrambling to figure out what to do next.
It’s a familiar position to those of us here at the Kings Herald. It’s been almost three years since we were unceremoniously shown the door by SB Nation, leading us to go fully independent and create this site.
Today’s news makes me sad for my friends and for the people who participated in the communities around those sites, but it also makes me grateful for what we’ve been able to build here. I can’t imagine if we had simply packed up and gone home, and I didn’t have a community like this to share this surprising and magical season with. Without you this site wouldn’t exist. Whether you support us through the Patreon, or buying merch, and just by regularly visiting the site and reading our articles, I want to say thank you.
Thank you for supporting us. Thanks for allowing us to keep writing about the Kings. Thanks for helping us continue this community without any corporate support.

I finished this post and proceeded immediately to the store to buy a shirt.
It looks like NHL and MLS sites are pretty much all going to be gone. Several of the NHL sites were on the leading edge of hockey analytics starting 15-20 years ago – one of the guys from CopperNBlue even got a FO gig with the Oilers! – but with a few exceptions (like JapersRink) they had mostly had all been beaten into team-specific corporate clones by 2020. It will be sad to see them go, but hopefully the good writers that were still there will be able to more fully realize their voice now.
Every time I see a post like this, I wonder about the future of Athletics Nation – which was the website that Tyler Blezinski birthed and ultimately leveraged into SB Nation. It would be so ironic if that site ultimately got buried under the weight of all this.
But it might be for the best at this point.
You are very welcome, Greg. I consider many of you good friends now and it has been a pleasure to watch you adapt and overcome. Money well spent.

This online community is what makes this place special and home. We aren’t going anywhere.
With the exception of a few (attempted) hiatuses, this site – and its predecessor have been daily reading for me for at least 15 years. I actually don’t know how long… but way before the Maloofs sold the team or the whole Seattle/Virginia whoever tried to buy the kings drama saga. The link has been on my Google home page since Google made those links on home pages. I post here and there, but I read EVERYTHING.
So.. it is I who would like to thank YOU for all that you do Greg, and Akis, and Will, and Tony and all those who contribute including the primary commenting members like Rob (who I remember as Section214, or as some dude who goes sans trousers for some odd reason) and all the other usual misfits.

In the marketplace of sports ideas, The Kings Herald is the winning $1MM half court shot at halftime. On the contrary, thank all of you, reading it is among the best parts of my day.
We have a special, magical thing here, all of us. It’s good that we take time to acknowledge it and appreciate it. Thanks to everyone here who writes, comments, and/or lurks. It’s much more fun being a Kings fan when I can share it with all of you.
I’ve been part of this community for almost 10 years. I never thought that I’d still be here checking the site regularly, laughing at GIFs, and following this “when-are-they-going-to-ever-be-good” team. A couple of you I’ve met in real life, but even just knowing everyone virtually gets me through following this team.
I’m so happy that when Vox announced they were letting the original writers go back in December 2019, literally 95% of us were willing to help out and follow the crew wherever they went. The fact that we crashed the servers twice when this website was launched is a true testament to how special this community is. Thank you Greg, Akis, and all the staff and writers who physically have this server running and writing great articles, and thank you to everyone else for following through and migrating to the new site. This truly is a special community, and the fact that we are experiencing winning basketball after so many years is the icing on the cake.
There were some great times over there. There’s been some great times over here. What’s happening this year has been really special and its been so much fun seeing it through the eyes of the TKH family. From the writers to the commenters, I appreciate having this community and being being able to take part in it. Thank you.

Thank you all for doing the hard work of launching the Kings Herald and allowing this community to thrive. This is a daily stop for me and it’s therapeutic to know that there are so many other insane people out there who have stuck with this team for all these years. It’s so amazing to have a fun-to-watch team again. It’s even more amazing to experience it along with all of you through all the posts, comments, and podcasts.
