Ziller’s schedule and watchability summaries for the festivities is a great piece of writing, and on the nose. Definitely worth the nominal charge: https://ziller.substack.com/

Very proud of our Kings for what they have done so far this season, and happy that we have a plethora of players representing the team and the city in the All-Star weekend activities.

Go Kings!

So what’s the main reason(s) one of these never occurs in Sac? SLC isn’t a huge city, population is like half of Sac. But I guess they have a lot more hotel rooms or something?

Yeah but even now that’s starting to go away. Reno’s DT isn’t what it used to be.

SLC is also the biggest swinging dick around in those parts. Sac is not. And there are alot more hotel rooms now than there used to be.

I think the NBA knows they have to try and get an ASG here though. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in the next 5 years.

Sort of like Keegan Murray at the Rising Stars – he’s there but they chose to ignore him for the most part.

That’s Sac – the Rodney Dangerfield of the Association. Having 16 seasons of draught, setting a record for futility helps to feed the disfavor.

Accomplishments will earn respect. Sac’s still at the almost. I am nervously looking forward to the rest of this dream like season.

This isn’t an issue of image. This is an issue of being able to host the ASG and all the logistics required and associated with it. There’s a reason why LA & NY get a lot of ASG’s: They can handle the logistics of it.

With all the construction in DT, there’s a decent chance that there will be enough rooms (especially if they are creative using the region as a whole) to satisfy the NBA’s requirement for hotel rooms.

But at this point, I’ll believe it when I see it.

This was addressed by Adam Silver a while back (and the number of rooms required may have changed).

The NBA requires 6,000 rooms to be in close proximity to host the popular event. There are about 16,000 rooms within 30 to 45 minute drive with traffic, stretching from Rocklin to Davis.

He explained that a 15 mile drive from Davis to Sacramento wouldn’t take the same amount of time as a 15 mile drive in a larger city like Los Angeles. Not to mention another 1,000 that could be brought up the Sacramento River on cruise ships and parked at the Port of West Sacramento. – Adam Silver

He didn’t mention it but there is another reason why even though there are plenty of rooms available in Sac that we still need to expand the hotel region to Rocklin & Davis and it’s because there is a lack of “high-end” rooms available.

The city & county of Sac loses a good portion of the economic benefit from hosting ASGs or other events since so much of it comes through hotel fees & taxes which are heading out of the city and county when the hotel region is expanded.

SLC has a lot if nice hotels & restaurants for such a moderate-sized city, but its also an anomaly among cities as many of the population are short-term residents or visitors and they need places to stay. I mean how many cities are the headquarters of an international faith; not too mention that they’re a gateway to some beautiful national parks.

Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it before but Grand Theft Alvarado is an awesome nickname.
